Chapter 90: [90 – A Misunderstanding]
Asher tried everything that he could but Blake was not ready to open his mouth. The man, so obstinate and defiant, continued to keep quiet while bearing every kick, every punch, every slap, and every damn torture technique.
There were a few ties when Bake fainted, and Asher had the guards wake him up forcibly but everything that they did had no affect on Blake’s determination. He continued to scream, cry, and writhe in pain but did not utter even a single word regarding why he was trying to harm Seraphina.
“Try what you can, Asher.” Blake spat a mouthful of blood, lying on the floor on his stomach, beaten and battered, unable to move, “I will not tell you anything. Let’s see how much more torture can Elijah Grayson and his men are capable of.”
He chuckled despite the pain, tears rolling down his eyes, mixing with his blood and turning red in color, “I would rather die here and now instead of saying anything. And just why are you asking me as if you do not know why I did what I did?”
Blake trembled, coughing out more blood. The look in his eyes, that fire of determination that Asher could see in his eyes and feel it in his bones, had Asher command his men to stop the torture.
After telling everybody else to leave, Asher chose to sit on the floor beside Blake’s blooded body and said, “Listen Blake, I know that why are you after Elijah. So, I would not have been surprised if it was Elijah whom you had hurt which I know that you have been doing since the past few years.”
Blake felt a slight wave of shock wash over him at the politeness with which Asher was talking to him. Not only that, but Asher also sounded as if he did not quite care if Elijah was the one who got hurt.
As the thought about why Asher would care for Elijah’s woman so much registered in his brain, Blake could not help but laugh and push himself to turn on his back and he continued to laugh, “What is it?” asked Asher unable to understand the reason behind Blake’s reaction.
“So, are you two sharing her or what? She your whore too?” Blake’s vulgar remark had Asher pick up the spiked bat that one of the guard had left, and slam it over Blake’s leg.
“Dare not to talk about Seraphina like that or else I will not only kill you but make your death so torturous and painful that you would beg me for death but I would not let you die so easily.” responded Asher in a cold and dangerous tone, causing a chill to run down Blake’s spine.
But he still put on the brave front and asked, “Why so upset?” he asked while sliding away from Asher even though he knew that it would be of no help. There was no way he would be able to escape from Asher’s clutches. He had accepted that he might die here but if given a chance or an opportunity, Blake was not going to let it go.
“Why else would you be so worried about the woman that Elijah Grayson is fucking? She mean something to you?” asked Blake.
This time instead of getting angered like before, Asher decided to not hit Blake and try to talk to him and get those answers out for which he and Seraphina are looking for.
Asher decided that the best way to have Blake open his mouth was perhaps by bringing Evelyn into the conversation, “Seraphina to me is what Evelyn was to you.” Asher commented and the very instant he noticed the change in Blake’s face.
“Do not talk about my Evie, you monster!” Blake growled and struggled to pull himself up, “Do not take her name with your filthy mouth!”
“Why are you getting so agitated? I only told you about my relationship with Seraphina and did not make a disgusting remark as you did.” Asher threw the bat aside and cracked his knuckles.
“So she is your sister, huh? I did not know that you had any sister except from that cousin of yours.” commented Blake to which Asher simply shrugged his shoulders and said, “There are a lot of things in this word that you might not know about but that does not mean that they are not true or that they do not exist.”
“But that is not what we are here to discuss, right Blake?” Asher stretched his legs in front of him, his feet just a few inches away from Blake’s throat, “Why were you trying to kill Seraphina?” he repeated.
Blake continued to stare at Asher wondering if he was seriously asking that question even when he knew about Evelyn. Seeing that there was no harm in telling Asher about his purpose, Blake revealed, “I targeted her because I want Elijah to go through the same pain that I did.”
Asher frowned, wondering about the reasons Blake chose to target Elijah, “At first I thought of killing him seeing that there was no one in his life whom he cared about and loved so much as much I loved my sister Evie.”
“He did not live with family for enough time to develop that bond. He loved them of course, but he was not going to go crazy without them.” Blake responded with a distinct coldness and edge in his voice.
Asher continued to listen and did not interrupt him, “I am not going to hide the fact that I did try to harm a few of his closed ones.” he remembered about the attacks on the Grayson family members that he had ordered but not one attack was successful.
“Until, that woman, Seraphina Vale.” Blake rolled back on his stomach, feeling his back starting to hurt unbearably, “Even from afar I could see how much he cared for her and I knew that he would go absolutely crazy if he lost her.”
“I saw the way he reacted when she was about to get assaulted, I know that he got his father’s best friend and partner, that Daniel Thompson arrested for the attempt. It gave me the confirmation I was looking for.” Blake chuckled mirthlessly while scratching at a wound on his back only to aggravate it.
“I came so close to taking away Seraphina from Elijah, the way he had taken my Evie from me. But my bad luck,” blood tears dropped down from his eyes to the floor, mixing into the small puddle of blood that had formed around Blake, “not only did she survive the accident but she also managed to catch me and bring me here before I could complete my mission.”
It looked as if Blake was going to continue to speak but Asher could not stay silent, especially after hearing the allegation that Blake imposed on Elijah, “Wait a minute!” he exclaimed loudly, “What did you say? Elijah, Elijah Grayson took your sister away from you?”
Blake looked at Asher as if he had grown a horn over his head but Asher continued, “You mean to say, that Elijah was the one who is responsible for your sister, Evelyn’s death?”
“Why else would I do all this? I am not a criminal! It’s because Elijah Grayson and his father have the law in their pockets that I could not get justice for my sister! That is why I took upon this responsibility of bringing my sister to justice!” Blake exclaimed, his voice louder and firmer than before.
“Okay, wait a minute,” Asher was able to put the puzzle pieces together and realize what was happening here. He was about to say something but Blake interrupted him by saying, “My Evie loved that Elijah so much that she gave her everything to him, all of herself to him and what did he gave her? Sadness, heartbreak, deceit, and betrayal.”
“Elijah broke my sister’s spirit, he shattered her heart and pierced her soul which destroyed her completely. It is because of him that my Evie chose to take her life because she could not longer bear the pain of his betrayal.” Blake cried, his little speech finally completing the puzzle and confirming Asher’s doubt.

“Hold on! You think that it was Elijah whom Evelyn was in love with? Are you serious?” Asher’s questions seemed to have offended Blake. He chose not to answer or say anything.
“Dude do you even know what you are taking about? How can you be so sure that it was Elijah -”
Blake did not let Asher complete his sentence and growled, “She told me herself! It was during Elijah’s mother’s birthday party when Evelyn told me about the person she was in love with and also told me to keep it a secret for only God knows what her reasons were.”
“Shit!” Asher did not know what made Blake misunderstand the situation, so he asked, “Did she specifically say his name?” he asked much to Blake’s annoyance.
“Why these twenty questions, huh? What are you -”
“Just answer my damn question, Blake! Did Evelyn specifically say Elijah’s name while telling you about the person she loved?” Asher repeated, he was beginning to get irritated at the stupid misunderstanding that could have cost both Elijah and Seraphina’s lives while the real culprit would have roamed freely without getting punished.
Blake sensed the seriousness in Asher’s voice and chose to give him a reply, “No, she did not say his name.” he recalled that particular incident from Katherine’s birthday party years ago, “She only pointed at him.”
“Pointed at him?” Asher repeated, “Was there someone else standing by his side at that moment?”
Blake frowned, not knowing why this was important but he still tried to remember if there was someone else beside Elijah that time, “There was only his mother, Katherine by his side when -” he stopped mid sentence realizing what Asher was trying to imply.
Seeing the change of expression on his face, Asher informed, “It was not Elijah whom your sister was in love with, Blake.” his words causing Blake’s eyes to widen in horror.
