Chapter 95: [95 – The Shadow of Secrets]
The sterile, antiseptic smell of the hospital hit Daniel as soon as he entered the hospital. Since his release from the police station he had been staying at the hotel room, recovering from his injuries and also formulation a bullet proof plan against Seraphina and Elijah.
Last time he had acted on impulse and that had resulted him those hours in jail and being shamed in front of the whole country because of the news headlines. Seraphina would definitely have to die for his daughter to become the eldest daughter-in-law of the Grayson family. As for Elijah, Daniel was going to make sure that not only does he get to watch Seraphina die but also learn the lesson that Daniel Thompson was not someone he could mess with.
He was so busy in his planning that he did not know about his daughter getting injured and being taken to the hospital where she was admitted at. He ignored his wife’s calls and messages until tonight when he was having dinner and finally checked on the messages and found out about Mia being in the hospital.
Amelia had also sent him the details of the hospital and the room that Mia had been admitted in so he directly went to the floor and to the room where his daughter lay unconscious. The room was dimly lit and he could spot Amelia sitting on the couch, asleep.
The beeping of the heart monitor was the only sound in the otherwise eerily quiet room. Daniel stepped inside and walked over to stand next to Mia’s bed. His daughter’s face, which was usually full of life and energy, was now pale and still. Tubes and wires connected her to various machines, a stark contrast to the vibrant young woman she had always been. Daniel’s heart twisted at the sight of his daughter, but he forced himself to remain composed.
He pulled a stool to sit down, the sound of it waking up Amelia, who looked surprised but elated seeing Daniel there. She rushed up to him, “Daniel,” she sobbed, throwing her arms around him. “Thank God you’re here. I was so scared. I didn’t know if you were still in trouble or if -”
He gently pulled her into his arms, patting her back soothingly, though his mind was already elsewhere, “I’m fine, Amelia. There’s no trouble now. I’ve been freed from jail, and all the charges against me have been declared invalid.”
She nodded, wiping her tears with the back of her hand, “I tried calling you, but you didn’t pick up.” she said while looking at Mia who still asleep.
“I know, I should’ve called you back sooner. But I was working on something that will ensure our daughter gets what she wants.”
Amelia’s brows furrowed in concern, “What do you mean?”
Daniel’s eyes darkened as he turned his gaze to Mia, he slowly walked over to her bedside, and took her hand in his, squeezing it gently. His voice dropping to a whisper as he spoke, “I promise you, Mia. I’ll give you what you want. Elijah will be yours and for that Seraphina will have to go.”
He bent down, placed a kiss on Mia’s forehead and continued, “Just wait patiently, my dear. Daddy is going to make sure that you get to become Elijah’s wife.”
Amelia gasped, her hand flying to her mouth, “Daniel, no! What are you saying? You can’t do this. You can’t go after Seraphina and Elijah. Just let them be. Mia will find someone else who truly loves her.” she was panicking. This was the situation that she wanted to avoid and now Daniel looked adamant.
Daniel turned to face his wife, his expression hardening. “No, Amelia. I won’t let Seraphina stand in the way of Mia’s and mine happiness. Elijah belongs with Mia, and at least 33% of that fortune. Seraphina will have to go, one way or another.”
“Please, Daniel,” Amelia begged, her voice trembling. “This isn’t right. You know it’s not right. Mia and Elijah, they can never be together, not like that.”
He ignored her, brushing past her as he headed for the door. “Take care of Mia. I have business to attend to.”
Amelia’s heart raced with fear as she watched him leave, panicking, wondering about what was he planning? What could he possibly do to force Seraphina out of Elijah’s life? The thought of what Daniel might do sent a chill down her spine. She knew her husband well enough to understand that when he set his mind to something, there was little anyone could do to stop him.
She couldn’t just sit here and do nothing. She had to stop this before it was too late, before everything spiraled out of control. Her hands trembled as she reached into her handbag and pulled out her cell phone. With shaky fingers, she dialed Marcus’s number.
“Come on, come on,” she muttered under her breath as the phone rang, each second feeling like an eternity. Finally, after what seemed like ages, Marcus answered.
“Amelia, how many times have I told you not to call me when I’m at home? And on my main cell phone, no less!” eve though his voiced sounded hushed, she could detect the irritation in it.
“Marcus, listen to me, please!” Amelia cut him off, her voice urgent, “Daniel came to visit Mia just now. He told me that he is planning something against Seraphina and Elijah. He looked really angry, Marcus. He won’t let them go after what they did to him, and he’s determined to see Mia married to Elijah.”
There was a brief silence on the other end of the line, and then Marcus’s tone shifted, becoming sharper, more alert, “What exactly did he say?”
“I don’t know the exact details of his plan,” Amelia replied, her voice trembling. “but he said he would make sure Elijah ends up with Mia and that Seraphina would have to go, I think he is going to kill her.” she did not tell him about the share that Marcus wanted in that bloody fortune.
“Did you not tell him that you cannot let Mia get married to Elijah?” asked Amelia.
Marcus cursed under his breath, “I only told him I didn’t mind what he does to Seraphina to scare him off, to make him think I’m not against his ambitions. If he starts to suspect anything, it won’t just be Mia’s secret that comes out. Every other secret I’ve been keeping, it wouldn’t have take Daniel any encouragement to reveal all my secrets!”
Amelia’s voice dropped to a whisper, fear gripping her heart. “Daniel doesn’t know that Mia isn’t his daughter, but you do. You know the truth, Marcus. You can’t let Mia and Elijah get married because,” her voice broke, chocked up by fear, “because they’re half-siblings.”
“Lower your tone!” Marcus hissed, “Don’t let anyone hear you. You should never talk about that secret, not now, not ever. Do you think I’m not worried? Do you think I don’t know how disastrous this could be? I won’t let it happen, Amelia. I promise you that.”
Amelia took a deep breath, trying to calm her racing heart. “But Daniel is so determined. I don’t know how to stop him, Marcus. And then there is Elijah as well who has been messaging me, asking about Mia. I don’t know how much longer I can keep them apart without letting the secret slip out. You know how Elijah is, what if, he agrees to -”
“Listen to me, Amelia.” Marcus said firmly, not letting Amelia complete her sentence, “Elijah has told me himself that he sees Mia as a younger sister and a best friend, nothing more. So it’s okay to reply to his messages, to keep things normal. But if Daniel starts pushing things too far, I’ll handle it. You just need to stay calm and act normal as you have been doing since years! We can’t let anyone suspect anything.”
Amelia nodded, even though Marcus couldn’t see her. She clutched the phone tightly, as if it were a lifeline. “I trust you, Marcus. I just, I am scared.”

“I know.” Marcus replied, his voice softening slightly, “But we can’t afford to let fear control us now. We need to stay focused. I’ll make sure Daniel doesn’t do anything reckless. Just take care of Mia and keep things as normal as possible. We’ll get through this.”
After hanging up, Amelia sank back into the chair beside Mia’s bed, her hands shaking uncontrollably. The weight of the secret she had been carrying for so long felt heavier than ever, threatening to crush her under its burden.
As she looked at Mia’s pale face, she felt a pang of guilt. Her sweet, innocent daughter had no idea what was going on around her, no idea of the secrets that had been kept from her for so many years.
Amelia squeezed her eyes shut, willing the tears to stay away. She couldn’t afford to break down now. Not when so much was at stake. She had to stay strong but deep down, she knew that the fragile balance they had maintained for so long was beginning to crumble. And when it did, the consequences would be devastating.
