Chapter 142: Chapter 142 Investigation
“Well, I believe it’s necessary to investigate since we have these suspicions, don’t you agree?” Hera wore a cold smile, her gaze directed not at Bry but at the man in question. If Bry’s claims were true, it suggested not only intentional injury but potentially other illegal schemes hidden underneath as well. Hera reasoned that where there’s smoke, there’s fire. She believed it was worth investigating not only to provide Bry with the closure he needed but also to uncover the truth behind the accident.
“Sister, how do we do that?” Bry asked eagerly, placing complete trust in Hera. He knew that Hera always followed through with her promises, and he was confident she had a plan to find out. Unbeknownst to Hera, she had already become a superhero figure in Bry’s mind, capable of almost anything.
“For starters, do you have a phone?” Hera projected confidence in front of Bry, but internally she acknowledged her limitations. She couldn’t handle this alone; she needed to defer to the experts. Time was also a pressing factor; they had just two hours before the competition they were in would begin, right after the Stadium Show Jumping.
“I don’t have a phone, but my father does,” Bry exclaimed, a sudden realization dawning upon him. With newfound determination, he rushed out of Diamond’s cubicle and darted toward his father, putting on a cute and cuddly act to persuade him to lend him the phone.
Bry’s father couldn’t help but cringe at the sight of his youngest son acting all cute and cuddly. He had a sinking feeling that Bry was up to no good, but without knowing what he was plotting, all he could do was reluctantly lend him his phone. However, he issued a constant reminder to Bry not to touch his contacts, fearing that he might accidentally delete his clients’ contact information.
After witnessing Bry obediently nod his head and promise that he would only call his classmates to check if they had arrived at the venue and exchange some text messages, Bry’s dad relented. He nodded, deciding to let his son have his way rather than dwell on being gloomy and acting like a brat.
He was also keenly aware of Bry’s suspicions regarding the wealthy man earlier. However, they lacked any evidence to support their claims. Pursuing legal action without concrete proof would be akin to banging their heads against a concrete wall. Moreover, it would bring financial hardship, which his family couldn’t afford, especially considering they were already investing everything in his younger brother’s treatment. Despite his brother’s silence on the matter, he sensed the weight of depression he was carrying. Just two years ago, his brother was a rising star, alongside Diamond.
His little brother and Diamond had won the national equestrian race two years in a row. However, things changed last year when that man joined the contestants. At the time, he didn’t even know who the man was, despite being surrounded by the media and other contestants. The man flaunted his presence, acting like a peacock in front of the cameras. He even directly challenged his little brother in a high-profile manner and taunted him multiple times to be violent, but his brother didn’t take the bait. Perhaps the man was attempting to disqualify the two-year reigning champions by inciting violence, but his plan didn’t succeed.
His little brother was the prime contender to win the championship and claim the trophy, the crowd favorite, and the pride of their village.
But now, he couldn’t even go to the stable on his own to do the things he loved or even go to the toilet unsupervised. Despite this, he remained his gentle, unsuspecting younger brother, believing that what happened before was likely just an accident.
Unlike his son, Bry’s father possessed keen intuition. He sensed that Diamond’s actions that day were not normal. Observing his little brother’s thorough preparation for the competition, he found it nearly impossible to believe that he could have done something that might have led to such an unfortunate accident.
Unlike Bry, his eyes were open to reality. He understood that no matter how much they struggled, he and his brother wouldn’t win this case, even if they fought tooth and nail. So, despite his indignation, he stopped gathering evidence and stored away what he had. He believed it would only prolong their agony and might even endanger his family if he pissed off the man. Yet, deep down, he still harbored a desire to fight for his younger brother’s justice and end his suffering.
“Brother, why are you spacing out?” Bry’s uncle asked because his older brother stopped midway through what he was saying after Bry came into the picture.
Coming back to his senses, he looked at his younger brother’s bewildered expression and felt guilty. “Oh, I forgot what I was about to say. I was trying to remember, but it completely slipped out of my mind.”
“Sister! I got it!” Bry exclaimed as he came running to Hera’s side, drawing the attention of other contestants who glanced over at them, breaking the silence.
“Sssh!” Hera placed her index finger on her lips, gesturing for Bry to lower his voice. “Why are you broadcasting it to everyone? What if the Director finds out I’m using a phone? We’ll both be in trouble, you know.” Hera said defeated.
“Ah!” Bry’s face flushed with embarrassment as he realized his mistake, completely forgetting about the potential consequences. “Sorry sister. I got so excited.”
Hera chuckled at Bry’s enthusiasm, finding his actions endearing. They hadn’t even started the investigation, yet he was already behaving as if they had a lead. Hera shook her head in amusement and resignation as she dialed the number she had memorized for emergencies.
The phone on the other end only rang twice before it was promptly answered. “Hello, Young Miss? What can I do for you?”
Hera tilted her head to the side, briefly checking the number displayed on the screen before bringing the phone back to her ear. “How did you know it was me?” she asked, baffled.
The person on the other end chuckled mirthfully before responding. “Young Miss, only a select few know my phone number, and currently, you’re the only one not permitted to use your phone. So, if there’s an emergency or you need to give out instructions, I assume you’d try to contact me using someone else’s phone.”
Hera chuckled as she playfully said. “That’s true. I thought I was being monitored by you 24/7.”
“Young Miss, As much as I wanted to, I can’t breach your privacy.” The person on the other side answered seriously as if they were really thinking of doing it to make sure that she’s always safe and sound.
Hera’s chuckle abruptly ceased as a shiver ran down her spine at the thought, prompting her to abandon any further joking and get straight to the point. “Cindy, I have something for you to do,” she said, her tone now serious and focused.
“Anything for you, Young Miss,” Cindy responded, her tone attentive as she listened to Hera’s instructions.
Bry observed Hera’s playful expression turn serious as she spoke on the phone. She exuded confidence and reliability, instilling in Bry a sense of hope that his uncle’s case would indeed be solved and justice would be served if Hera led them to the forefront.
