Chapter 148: Chapter 148 Claiming The Top Spots
The MC’s voice resounded across the tranquil racetrack, proclaiming the victor of the race, as a hush descended over the spectators, gripped by the intensity of the competition that had pitted the four contenders against each other in a high-speed battle.
The MC’s announcement rings out even as Hera and the others are still catching their breath. “Diamond, the two-time consecutive champion, returns to claim its third championship title on the national stage! This young steed hasn’t lost an ounce of its momentum despite a year’s failure due to an accident from racing! Congratulations to the winner!”
Only then did the spectators seated along the track rise up in a fervent uproar.
The spectators erupted into cheers as they rose from their seats, applauding Hera and Diamond’s victory. Hera gently tugged on the reins, prompting Diamond to gradually slow down until it came to a halt, releasing a puff of steam from its nostrils, a testament to its exertion during the race.
Hera, Xavier, and Zen clinched the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd positions, leaving Bry flabbergasted as he flew to their side. His family stood frozen, incredulous at the unexpected triumph of their horses. Bry’s father and uncle appeared stunned, their minds seemingly struggling to process the astonishing turn of events, perhaps experiencing a temporary mental overload from the shock of the outcome.
They initially hoped to secure at least one of the top three positions with one of their horses. However, they never anticipated achieving all three top spots with each of their horses.
It took them a full five minutes to process what had transpired, by which time Hera and the others found themselves surrounded by villagers who had rushed over with Bry as soon as Diamond came to a halt at the side.
They were well aware of the rigorous training regimen the trio underwent, forging deep connections with their horses over those past few days of preparation. The fact that Diamond, despite being sidelined from last year’s championship due to an accident, could still secure its third championship upon its return sent shockwaves through both the spectators at the event and those tuning in via national television.
Thanks to Hera and the other two’s extraordinary performances, they once again seized the spotlight as the talk of the internet. Despite their existing fame, their latest achievement only served to amplify their renown, adding another layer to their already substantial popularity.
“You cheated!” The loud accusation shattered the celebratory atmosphere, drawing the attention of the crowd towards the source. All eyes turned to the bald man, his face flushed with rage, refusing to accept defeat graciously, revealing his true colors as a sore loser.
He marched directly towards Hera, forcefully pushing through the crowd, heedless of those he jostled and nearly causing some to stumble to the ground in his single-minded determination to reach her. Fueled by indignation over the competition’s outcome and compounded by Hera’s evasion of his underhanded tactics, his fury was palpable.
He now harbored a suspicion that Hera had been privy to something, which explained her guarded demeanor and her successful interception of his sneak attack. As it turned out, his assumptions weren’t entirely unfounded.
He shifted all the blame onto Hera and her friends for his failure to clinch the championship this time. Fuming with indignation, he felt robbed of the spotlight, having meticulously arranged interviews on esteemed shows to elevate his own popularity. Little did he foresee his humiliating defeat.
He couldn’t bring himself to accept it, refusing outright to acknowledge the reality before him. Frustrated and unwilling to face defeat, he resorted to throwing his weight around.
But before he could reach Hera, Zen and Xavier swiftly stepped forward, forming a protective barrier around her. They sensed his palpable hostility towards Hera, fueled by his bitter defeat. Perhaps he saw Hera as an easy target because of her gender, but Xavier and Zen were resolute in their defense, unwilling to let him lay a finger on her.
“Fuck off!!!” The man’s voice thundered, his eyes ablaze with fury as he launched himself towards Xavier, completely unhinged. “You damn cheater! You’re not worthy of any accolades or acknowledgment!”
The entire crowd watched in disbelief as the man made a spectacle of himself, his punches easily dodged by Xavier, who skillfully tripped him, causing him to crash to the ground, his chin taking the brunt of the impact.
Amidst the commotion, Hera found a moment to mock the man, her laughter echoing through the chaos. “Maybe you’re projecting yourself,” she taunted, her eyebrows raised in amusement as she stood over him with her arms crossed. Xavier and Zen flanked her like vigilant sentinels, ready to protect her at any moment.
The man lifted his head from the ground, fixing a menacing glare directly on Hera. Though his shouting ceased, the intensity in his eyes suggested he was mentally willing to harm her. “Be mindful of who you cross,” he warned, his voice dripping with menace. “Or you may find yourself meeting an unexpected end. You better confess your cheating, otherwise…” His threat hung in the air, the unspoken implications clear to all who witnessed the confrontation. Anger rippled through the crowd at his audacious threat, as if he regarded no one with any value.
But Hera remained unfazed. “Otherwise, what?” she challenged, punctuating her words with a rhythmic tap of her index finger against her arm. “Actually, there is something I need to confess,” she admitted, allowing her words to linger momentarily in the air.
Thinking that Hera had succumbed to his threat, he smirked triumphantly as he attempted to rise. But Hera’s next words stopped him in his tracks. “Earlier, as I approached the finish line, he attempted to attack my horse with a whip rigged with needles,” she explained with a hint of sadness, her shoulders slumping. It became evident that her earlier bravado had been a facade, now shattered by the reality of his threat, which had instilled genuine fear in her.
