Chapter 170: Chapter 170 Accident?
“Daisy, take a deep breath,” Hera said soothingly, demonstrating with her own breaths. “Focus on calming down. Are you hurt? That’s what matters most. As for the car, it can be fixed, so don’t worry about that now.”
Daisy nodded, trying to compose herself. “I’m fine, Sister Hera,” she replied, her voice still shaky.
“Is this really your car?” Zen exclaimed, rushing over to the Bugatti Mistral parked at the roadside. Bry, who had been sitting in his father’s truck, also hopped down to get a closer look, his eyes wide with excitement but cautious not to touch it, wary of dirtying the car.
Hera didn’t immediately respond to Zen’s question, instead focusing her attention on Daisy and waiting for her to calm down. Once Daisy seemed to be settling, Hera gently inquired about the accident. “Where did it happen, and did you call the police?”
Daisy shook her head. “No, I didn’t. When the accident happened, I called Cindy in a panic. She arrived promptly and handed me the key to your other car, handling the situation herself to ensure you wouldn’t be kept waiting.”
“Ah, I see. So this car wasn’t the one involved in the accident?” Hera sought confirmation.
Daisy shook her head again. “No, it was the car you drove here last time.” Her head was still spinning from the shock. She’d heard from her friend that the Pagani, which was rear-ended, cost $7.4 million. Even minor repairs could run into tens of thousands, and the damage wasn’t just a scratch. There was a dent in the rear. The thought left her terrified; her salary wouldn’t even cover a fraction of the repair costs. And just remembering that makes her tear up again.
That’s why she informed Hera right away uncertain whether Hera needed to contact the insurance company or take any other steps regarding the accident.
“Wait what?!” Zen zoomed in on them after he heard what they said. He was from the wealthy circle and he knew the value of the car that Hera drove the last time, it was a limited edition Pagani Codalunga, his eyes turned wide while his jaw dropped open. “You have two hypercars?” But his first concern was different.
Hera didn’t have a chance to butt in as Daisy corrected Zen. “No, she has 5 of them.” Daisy’s head was still in the dumpsters so she did not even consider what she was saying and just answered right away.
With cameramen still present, the entire exchange was caught on camera. Despite feeling exposed and vulnerable under the lens, Hera’s immediate concern was for Daisy’s well-being upon learning about the accident. She hadn’t anticipated the direction the conversation between Daisy and Zen would take, leaving her feeling even more exposed.
She finds herself compelled to speak up. “I was merely borrowing it from my closest friend; her uncle owns a car dealership,” she explains. Hera can only attempt to feign confidence for now. It’s crucial to address the situation, particularly in the public eye, to prevent being unjustly labeled as an escort or a kept woman. Such assumptions could tarnish her reputation, a risk she cannot afford. “Besides,” she adds, “she recently welcomed a new baby, so she left her other cars for me to use.
‘I’m sorry Athena, I’ll use you are my shield for now. Let me just treat you somewhere after this.’ Hera silently pledges to herself to indulge Athena with another shopping spree or a day of doing whatever she pleases.
However, Zen appears to have a different agenda, showing no inclination to veer from the topic as he presses on. “There are only a handful of car dealerships in the country that have access to such limited editions worldwide. Who is your best friend’s uncle?”
Hera couldn’t fathom what was wrong with Zen; she had been subtly signaling him to drop the subject from the start, yet he seemed oblivious to her cues this time. His usual quick wit appeared to be lacking. Nevertheless, Hera responded, “I believe he’s the CEO of A&D Car Dealership.” Despite the turmoil brewing within her, Hera maintained her composure outwardly, her demeanor poised and collected.
“Oh, CEO Jackson! That explains it. He’s renowned for his ability to procure such exceptional cars, boasting an extensive collection of rarities.” Zen nodded repeatedly, his gaze fixed on the Bugatti Mistral with profound admiration, his arms crossed. “Were you aware that he was quite the accomplished racer in his youth? My grandfather mentioned that he kickstarted his business with the winnings from his races.”
As Zen skillfully redirected the conversation away from them, Hera finally grasped his intention. A warmth spread through her heart, causing her lips to purse slightly as she tried to maintain her composure, ensuring her expression remained steadfast, especially since they were still essentially in the presence of the camera.
It appears Zen shares Hera’s goal, recognizing that her initial explanation alone might not suffice to dispel the suspicion surrounding her, whether as a kept mistress or a sugar baby. Thus, Zen interjects with additional probing questions, aiming to elicit a more comprehensive response. By doing so, he intends to provide viewers with a clearer understanding of the situation and help Hera better clarify her circumstances.
So, even if someone attempted to sow discord later on and exploit this issue to tarnish Hera’s reputation, there was already a prepared explanation ready to be utilized. However, as quick-witted as he was, Zen also recognized that acquiring the Pagani Codalunga was no easy feat, akin to obtaining a vintage car from a dedicated collector. Despite CEO Jackson’s influence, securing such a rare vehicle and permitting his niece’s friend to drive it around would pose significant challenges and is close to impossible.
He understood that while the Jacksons and the Lowerys may be affluent, their connections were limited, and A&D Car Dealership lacked the established wealth and influence needed for such a grand gesture. Despite sensing Hera’s attempt to conceal something, he remained committed to assisting her in restoring her reputation. Having spent a week with her, he had come to understand Hera’s character and refused to entertain the notion that she could be a kept mistress.
Even the spouses of high-ranking executives wouldn’t typically have the privilege of driving such an exotic car. What’s more telling is that upon hearing about the car being rear-ended, she displayed no visible signs of distress. Even if she were thick-skinned, the news would likely cause some degree of nervousness or agitation. Most people, upon hearing such news, might forget to inquire about the well-being of the person involved and would likely react with immediate anger, focusing solely on the damage to the car.
Zen wasn’t the sole observer of this anomaly; even Xavier and those well-versed in cars caught on. However, these perceptive individuals could be counted on one hand, so the situation remained manageable. Meanwhile, Leo, watching from the sidelines, contemplated aiding Hera in quietly restoring her reputation while they were still on the show, aiming to prevent the issue from escalating and becoming distorted. The true danger lay in the story being twisted and manipulated as it spread.
But it seems he does not need to step in anymore since Zen already did the part.
