Chapter 176: Chapter 176 Helping Out a Patient
“Are you sure, Zhane?” Hera asked Zhane again because she didn’t want to impose if he was merely being polite by offering his expertise. However, she also trusted the exceptional doctors affiliated with the Avery banner and knew she could seek their opinions regardless.
“I actually find his condition worth researching about and if the operation was successful it could become a learning material for all the doctors worldwide, so I was planning to offer a free consultation an operation in exchange for us taking in footage of the whole operation and the medical record be shared with the other doctors.” Zhane elaborated while he was keeping his serious expression.
In reality, Zhane’s words were not premeditated; rather, they were a spontaneous decision made on the spot. He wasn’t motivated by embarrassment over eavesdropping, but rather by a genuine desire to assist Hera. Furthermore, he saw it as an opportunity to justify his presence outside, should his brothers attempt to undermine his intentions by suggesting he was there for Hera instead of Luke.
Despite lacking dating experience, Zhane’s professional background enabled him to adeptly read people, including his brothers’ evident interest in Hera. Feeling compelled to pursue a connection with her, he found himself at a loss for how to proceed. To complicate matters, his mother had observed their interaction at the coffee shop during their mall outing, and Hera’s appearance on a variety show she frequently watched only fueled her curiosity, leading her to repeatedly inquire about Hera.
Though his family adhered to traditional values, they didn’t prioritize wealth or social status when evaluating individuals. Instead, they placed significant importance on character, understanding that a person of integrity could bring prosperity to their family for generations to come. Conversely, they believed that a person with questionable character could lead to the downfall of a family within a single generation.
His mother held Hera in high regard, recognizing her composure, grace, and upbringing. Despite Hera’s lack of wealth, his mother took a genuine liking to her and expressed a desire to meet her, even envisioning her as a potential daughter-in-law. Unlike in the past, when Zhane would make excuses and retreat to his office when his mother raised the marriage talk with him, he no longer felt uneasy at the thought of Hera becoming his lawful wife.
When his mother suggested he seek out Hera and provided her address, Zhane realized his mother had been as invested in the show as he was, having noted Hera’s residence from the start. Despite witnessing Hera’s interactions with Xavier and Leo, his mother’s opinion of Hera remained favorable. She firmly believed that a woman of Hera’s caliber would naturally attract suitors, emphasizing that her qualities as a potential wife were undeniable. His mother’s wisdom echoed the belief that even if a man strayed, he would ultimately yearn for the warmth and support of a loving wife to help create a comforting home environment.
Zhane realized that he would be the one losing out if he stepped back for his friend Xavier to pursue the woman he fancied. His mother was well aware of his circle of friends and cherished each of them as if they were her own children. However, she staunchly believed that her son should not miss out on the opportunity to be with a good woman simply because of his friends.
Unlike the rest of the group, Zhane was wholly dedicated to his passion for medicine. While he only maintained close ties with his circle of friends, he couldn’t be labeled as introverted. He did socialize with other doctors, yet his primary focus remained on his profession. He chose to prioritize his time towards research and patient care, believing he could achieve greater success and make a more significant impact within his field.
Given his limited friend group, Zhane found himself at a loss for conversation topics with Hera. They lacked a common ground to engage in meaningful discussion, leaving him feeling apprehensive. He watched as his other friends, particularly Dave, questioned Xavier, further heightening his concern.
Now that he had discovered a common ground to converse with Hera, he seized the first opportunity that presented itself. Despite his initial hesitation, Zhane felt confident that his father would not disapprove of his decision.
“Is it really true, Dr. Everett?” Bry’s father’s voice trembled with emotion as he asked the question that had been weighing heavily on his heart. The prospect of his younger brother being included in this opportunity was already the best outcome he could hope for. Knowing that doctors with extensive expertise and experience would conduct the research gave him renewed hope that his brother might walk again. His chest swelled with a tumult of emotions, especially those he had long concealed: hope mingled with the pain of witnessing his younger brother’s suffering for so long.
As tears of hope welled in Bry’s father’s eyes, Zhane couldn’t shake a twinge of guilt. He realized he had leveraged a patient’s condition to spark a conversation with Hera and make a favorable impression. Quickly readjusting his thoughts, he reverted to his usual demeanor as a stern doctor.
“Yes, I will be leading this surgery, so if there’s anything you need to clarify, feel free to ask me directly.” Zhane’s voice betrayed no hint of emotion; he appeared stoic and detached. In his line of work, Zhane had learned to compartmentalize his emotions. Being burdened by feelings could prove overwhelming, especially considering the unpredictable nature of his profession. With the constant possibility of losing a patient and the uncertainty of outcomes, allowing emotions to reign would only add unnecessary strain to their mentality and composure which would be detrimental to their work and may lead to accidents or more stress.
“Thank you, Doctor!” Bry’s father’s gratitude was palpable, almost prompting him to kneel before Zhane with overwhelming happiness. Zhane quickly halted the gesture, and Hera offered her support by steadying his arm from the side. She empathized with his immense joy and shared in the sentiment. With Zhane leading the surgery, she couldn’t have asked for a better outcome.
