Chapter 229: Chapter 229 Athena and Hera’s Anger
So now that Hera was in front of her, well and healthy, Athena instantly relaxed, and seeing Hera being so close to the male leads even the men giving Hera a peck before leaving made Athena forget her earlier worries and instantly jumped in on the gossip but only to find out that she nearly got drugged.
She was not just caught off guard; she was left completely in the dark. Now, she was furious. Hera summarized what had occurred in her private room, detailing her and Leo’s hospitalization, which prompted Zhane to investigate and ultimately led to the report she had just received.
As she recalled Leo’s promise to buy them fruit, Hera couldn’t help but feel incredulous. “How could he go out when he was still hooked up to an IV drip?” The mixture of concern and admiration for his thoughtfulness stirred within her. However, she quickly refocused her thoughts. “Wait, let’s get back to the topic at hand. My mind is wandering.” Hera then composed herself and resumed narrating the events to Athena.
“That jerkface!” Athena roared indignantly upon learning she nearly fell victim to the man’s scheme, inadvertently hurting her best friend and even Leo, who had suffered greatly. While Hera shared most of the information with Athena, she tactfully omitted the details of what happened between her and Leo in the private room. She knew Athena well enough to anticipate the endless teasing she’d receive if Athena found out. Hera couldn’t bear the thought of facing Athena’s playful mockery, especially in front of Leo and the entire male lead squad.
Hera cleared her throat, determined to steer her thoughts away from the intimate scenes with Leo. Once refocused, she spoke, her voice calm but laced with anger. “Why don’t we take action against that man for trying to drug you?” Her aura betrayed her simmering rage. “I initially thought it was part of the storyline, that Dave was supposed to be drugged. It wasn’t until I learned it was connected to you that I realized the true target.” Hera shared her thoughts with Athena, only to be met with the latter’s shocked exclamation.
Athena’s eyes widened as if she suddenly recollected something. “Right! Before leaving the university, I recall having something to say about Dave, but it slipped my mind. Now that you’ve mentioned the drugging incident and your theory about it, it’s all come back to me. I was about to remind you to keep an eye on Dave because, if I’m not mistaken, Dave is supposed to be drugged at the Dragon Palace Hotel’s restaurant private room while he’s there with his assistant discussing business with a dignitary from Japan.”
Athena paused for a moment, then continued, “But I’m not certain when it’s supposed to happen. That’s all the information I can recall. Since he was with you, I figured it probably wouldn’t occur. Plus, we haven’t heard any discussions with other countries, so…”
Athena paused, her expression shifting as she recalled something even more significant about Dave and the drugging incident.
“Then Alice would happen to be on the venue as a guest in the restaurant’s general dining area and would meet Dave who was drugged in the bathroom like any other love story in a novel.” Athena sniggered and then continued. “Then, she would bring him to one of the hotel rooms instead of the hospital to let him rest, but things take a spicy turn when Dave, still under the influence, pulls her back into bed and pins her down. As expected, the outcome is, well, obvious. When Dave finally wakes up, he’s left trying to make amends with a tearful Alice, who reveals it was her first time.”
Unlike before, when she enjoyed revisiting these scenes merely as part of the story, now it felt more like a way to mock the original female lead, especially after discovering her true nature.
Hearing Athena launch into another round of plot analysis, her gossipy nature fully ignited, and Hera decided to divert her attention. She pulled out her phone and dialed Gerald’s number. It barely rang once before he picked up. “Yes, hello, Young Miss?!” His voice, brimming with excitement, echoed through the line.
Hera didn’t have time for small talk. With the arrival of Leo and the others imminent, she got straight to the point. “Gerald, could you confirm for me if Alice Quinn was on the guest list for the hotel’s restaurant today and at what time she arrived?”
After sending her instructions, Gerald immediately set to work. Once Hera ended the call, Athena was already looking at her with a knowing expression. “Are you suspecting that this was actually part of the storyline? But Dave wasn’t the one drugged, nor was he with his assistant and a dignitary from Japan,” Athena reasoned, though she was still trying to understand Hera’s train of thought.
“Then tell me, how many people were there in the private room with Dave when he was drugged according to the story in the novel?” Hera asked nonchalantly.
“There were only three of them because the dignitary’s entourage was dining outside in the general dining room…” Athena’s words trailed off as if she was starting to understand where Hera’s thoughts were going.
“Then, how was Dave drugged and who was responsible?” Hera then added, as if they were playing a question-and-answer game.
“Dave was drugged by a potent drug that was smeared…” Athena’s eyes grew wider as she remembered the information from the report Hera had shared. “What the fuck?! Babe! Are you telling me that I was actually part of the storyline without even knowing? Was I supposed to be the naive young sole heiress from the novel who was only mentioned once because of Dave’s drugging incident? I wasn’t even introduced or given a family name!” Athena looked seriously aggrieved. Her attention had shifted from the drugging incident to the revelation of her unwitting involvement in the storyline.
Yes, even Hera hadn’t paid too much attention to this part because, like Athena, she focused closely on the novel’s descriptions. However, since experiencing deviations from the novel from the beginning, she thought many events wouldn’t follow the original flow. She believed there would still be some inevitable events, like Alexi choosing Minerva. In essence, the major events were still happening and following the storyline. So, she thought that when Dave was drugged, it should at least involve him being in the same place and meeting the same people.
And since she didn’t know exactly when that would happen, she had given him a gentle reminder at her house and a bottle of antidote to counteract the effects of the aphrodisiac. Only now did she realize how potent the aphrodisiac truly was.
The novel didn’t provide all the crucial details about the drug used or the exact timing, so it made sense why Athena thought they could rely on hearing about the dignitaries to gauge if that event was happening. Although Dave was not the one who was drugged and many things were different, Hera felt there was a strong possibility that this was still the storyline unfolding.
And just as she could steal the female lead’s luck and life, the events and developments of the storyline might also shift depending on the characters involved. In essence, the world’s consciousness was likely adhering to the general framework of the story, substituting characters who fit the descriptions from the novel to fulfill the scenarios. If that were the case, it might be easier for her to seize someone else’s fate.
This also applies to the people around them. However, she believed that altering or stealing the fate of the female lead and male leads would be significantly more challenging.
