Chapter 239: Chapter 239 Cook For You
After ensuring the consultation went smoothly, Hera breathed a sigh of relief. Zhane then kindly offered to escort her to Leo’s room before seeing her home. However, his plans were thwarted as he had already spent a considerable amount of time with Hera that afternoon. Just as he made the offer, an emergency patient arrived, and with all his doctors occupied in surgery, Zhane had no choice but to step in himself.
Hera noticed Zhane’s mixed feelings of frustration and annoyance. Although she wasn’t sure of the cause, she felt compelled to comfort him. After all, he had just done her a tremendous favor by taking care of her during her IV drip treatment. She wasn’t heartless enough to simply take their kindness for granted.
She gently squeezed his arm. “You should go. The surgery will probably take hours. I’ll ask Hannah to prepare dinner for you, and I’ll have Amy bring it over here.” She smiled warmly at him.
Zhane wanted to say something but restrained himself. Instead, he nodded at her and briefly clasped Hera’s hand, which was resting on his arm, before hurrying off to the operating theater.
But the moment Zhane left, Xavier tugged at Hera’s sleeve. “Are you close with Zhane?” he asked, looking aggrieved. Unlike his other friends, he felt the most left in the dark. Although he sensed that his friends were all interested in the same woman he was, he didn’t know how it had come to be and felt a little blindsided.
If they were all competing for the same woman, Xavier was certain that each of them was equally formidable. It might strained their long-standing friendship and, of course, complicated their interests, though that was the least of their concerns.
As the youngest among them, Xavier had always been pampered and kept in the loop, so being in the dark about Hera, whom he believed he was closest to, left him unsettled. He found himself doubting his position and feeling reluctant to lose her, especially to his own friends.
Understanding Xavier’s feelings of insecurity and curiosity, Hera chose to be open with him. “When I was kicked out of my house over a week ago, my best friend brought me to the hospital because I hadn’t eaten all day and collapsed due to the stress. Zhane was my attending doctor then, and he also helped me out when I was in trouble some time ago.” She gently tugged at Xavier’s sleeve, guiding him towards Leo’s room. She hoped that Xavier and Leo could get along at least cordially; she didn’t want to push away someone who was already feeling down.
But at the same time, she hesitated to bring him along to visit Leo. She felt a bit uneasy, unsure of how to handle Xavier, who appeared lost and vulnerable. Despite her uncertainty, she gritted her teeth and headed towards Leo’s private room.
When she opened the door, she was greeted by Leo’s radiant smile, his eyes sparkling with joy. However, upon noticing Xavier behind her and Hera holding his sleeves, Leo’s smile froze instantly. Hera instinctively withdrew her hands from Xavier’s sleeves and approached Leo. “How are you feeling? Have you received the examination results?” she asked with a smile, trying to conceal her unease. Deep down, she was unsure what exactly was making her nervous.
“Not yet,” Leo’s voice turned lukewarm, clearly upset. He seemed to be in internal turmoil, battling his own thoughts. He wanted to do something but felt he couldn’t. Perhaps he wanted to question Hera about why she was with Xavier when she had promised to see him, only to find her followed by one of his love rivals.
Hera clearly picked up on the change in his emotions, especially in his voice. He was upset and doing his best to hide it, though not very successfully. Instead of getting upset herself, she felt nervous, as if she had done something wrong. Trying to coax him, she said, “Right, I asked Hannah to cook dinner, and Amy will be sending the food here. Do you have any requests?”
Seeing Hera flustered because he was upset made him happy inside. He hadn’t realized he had this much impact on her. Her efforts to coax him softened his resolve instantly; he couldn’t stay angry with her. “Alright, I’ll listen to you. Do you have any recommendations?”
Seeing his mood improve, Hera brightened up and smiled sweetly at Leo. “Hannah is great at almost everything. How about some light food since you’re hospitalized? Maybe chicken mushroom soup or medicinal chicken soup, and some seafood porridge? Or would you prefer chicken porridge?” Hera offered excitedly. She wasn’t sure if her excitement came from showcasing her chef’s amazing cooking skills or simply because Leo was back to his usual self.
“It would be great if I could eat your cooking instead,” Leo said, casting his eyes downward and smiling a little wryly. He wondered if it might be possible to enjoy her cooking every day in the future. Just thinking about it made him smile, but Hera couldn’t see it since it was fleeting and he was looking slightly down.
Instead, she thought he was feeling sad, so she quickly changed her offer, needing to cater to the will of the patient. She glanced around the spacious private room, which resembled a hotel suite more than a hospital. It had its own kitchen with an island counter, a huge fridge, a four-seater round dining table, and a comfortable cream-colored couch near the entrance on the left. On the right was a large bathroom with a bathtub and a shower, designed so that immobile patients could be carried to the tub for a bath or shower on their own.
The entire room was designed with elegant touches and a cozy atmosphere, ensuring the patient’s family had everything they might need. The utensils were well sterilized, allowing patients to use them without any hesitation about hygiene. This also meant families didn’t need to bring anything from outside. Hera couldn’t help but admire Zhane’s meticulous approach to running the hospital. Not many hospitals paid this level of attention to detail, making it feel more like a high-end hotel than a medical facility.
Even Leo’s bed was a queen-size, providing exceptional comfort. If not for the IV drip attached to his hand, he would appear to be simply resting in a luxurious suite. Despite the cozy setting, his pale complexion and pitifully weak appearance served as stark reminders of his condition.
Seeing that she had everything she needed, Hera felt a sense of obligation to prepare a meal for Leo. “Alright, let’s see if there are any ingredients in the fridge. If not, I’ll buy some so I can cook for you.”
After saying that, Hera noticed Leo’s eyes lighting up as a slow smile spread across his lips. He felt Hera was pampering him, and despite the circumstances, he welcomed the attention. He decided to make the most of being a patient so Hera could continue to pamper him.
“I am hungry too,” Xavier chimed in. Leo’s brief moment of happiness was cut short by Xavier’s reminder that he wasn’t alone with Hera, and there was an uninvited guest present.
