Chapter 275: Chapter 275 Do You Need Help?
Dave’s cheekiness only made the old man more frustrated and exasperated. He couldn’t berate Hera or Dave since they hadn’t done anything wrong, but at the same time, he didn’t want to give up on Dave. Coming from a powerful political family, Dave could offer riches, influence, and valuable connections for his granddaughter and himself.
He couldn’t help but be greedy, but he didn’t want to push too much or risk losing any chance altogether. So, he was torn.
“Sir, we welcome you to our country and hope you’re enjoying your stay so far. Let us tour you around when we have time,” Hera sweetly offered the Korean dignitary. At the same time, she subtly pushed him away, hinting that he shouldn’t force spending time with Dave if it is making him uncomfortable.
Sure, it was Dave’s and the other politicians’ duty to ensure the dignitary’s stay was pleasant. However, since the Korean dignitary’s visit was unofficial and secret, they had the option to delegate the role of tour guide to someone else. This way, his visit could be treated as private time.
Getting Hera’s subtle hint, the old man felt humiliated in front of everyone. He wanted to explode in anger but had to restrain himself. After all, he was not in his own country and was dealing with a young woman. He had to uphold his reputation and feared that quarreling with her would only tarnish his image and become the subject of gossip.
So, he stared at Hera for a moment, his lips twitching as he struggled to maintain his smile. After exchanging a few more courteous words with Dave, he strode away without looking back.
As he left, he made a mental note of Hera and the way she had humiliated him in front of Dave, whom he now considered his future grandson-in-law.
Hera’s group watched as the dignitary’s group left the restaurant in a huff. As soon as the old man was out of sight, Dave rejoiced. “My goodness, sweetheart! You are the best!” Dave looked at Hera with sparkling eyes.
Though Hera had handled the situation with apparent ease, it wasn’t as simple as it seemed. She had just offended the dignitary, which could have significant repercussions. Dave knew he couldn’t have managed it as gracefully as she did. He felt touched by her support and simultaneously worried for her.
If he could have dealt with the dignitary like that, he would have done it earlier and wouldn’t have had to suffer and run around trying to avoid the old man. Unfortunately, even though he wasn’t responsible for welcoming the dignitary during his private vacation, he still had to show some respect. The most he could do was subtly hint, as he did earlier, that he already had a girlfriend. This was his way of signaling the old man to stop pushing his granddaughter onto him because it was becoming bothersome.
Now that Hera had offended the dignitary on his behalf, he felt a stronger determination to resolve the situation for her. This incident also bolstered his belief in his decision to pursue Hera romantically. His grandfather often emphasized that successful politicians are supported by wives who are intelligent and adept at acting in their husband’s best interest or seizing opportunities. He believed that with a bit of guidance, Hera would understand this and be ready to stand by his side in the near future.
Little did he know, Hera wasn’t particularly concerned about any repercussions from the dignitary. If she had been genuinely worried, she wouldn’t have taken such a direct approach. Coincidentally, the Korean chief officer responsible for the heritage site, which was a key aspect of Korean relations with their country, happened to be closely associated with Hera’s aid, who was now managing their branch in that country.
Hera learned about this from casual conversations in their group chat, where her aide subtly hinted at their achievements without actually telling her what they had accomplished so far. It was Gerald’s report that reminded her of the Korean dignitary staying at her hotel, and listening to what the old man had said helped her piece together the situation.
Without that aid, Hera wouldn’t have attempted to intervene. She only confronted the dignitary to impress Dave and demonstrate her loyalty to him, hoping he would value her actions and develop deeper feelings for her.
Dave was cunning and shrewd, but his emotional intelligence (EQ) was lacking. He approached situations logically and politically, always calculating the potential benefits. His attraction to Hera grew because of her higher EQ, which complemented his own deficiencies in that area.
“Hey Dave, why are you letting that dignitary push you around? That’s not like you,” Rafael teased lightly. Despite his concern for Hera, he was confident that Dave wouldn’t let anyone, especially not in his territory, make a move on her.
“Tell me more about it! If he hadn’t brought his granddaughter around, hoping to hook her up with me while my mom is here, I wouldn’t be in this position with my hands tied, unable to make a move. I’ve been racking my brains for solutions ever since I found out I was being hunted by that old fox,” Dave sighed in exasperation.
“You know my mom has always been concerned about my marriage, and since someone presented herself to me, she’s been over the moon. I even suspected she might have leaked my location to them, but when I confronted her, she denied it. Instead, I filled her in on what was happening, and that’s when I accidentally left my phone and wallet at home while I was on the run after she invited the dignitary’s granddaughter into my house,” Dave said, looking aggrieved and annoyed.
If he hadn’t confronted his mom, she wouldn’t have known about the dignitary’s granddaughter, and she wouldn’t have gotten involved in this issue, backing up that woman and preventing him from taking action. Only after he had no other options left did he run away, fortunately with Rafael and Hera, and Hera even helped him out.
Now, he became even more determined to pursue a relationship with Hera. In doing so, everyone would benefit: his mother would stop pestering him about marriage and blind dates, while other women would hesitate to compete with someone who’s not only beautiful but also talented and smart.
Just thinking of that future made his heart swell with pride and lifted his mood. After the brief interruption in their dinner, they all resumed ordering their food. Rafael didn’t mind treating Dave to a meal; despite being rivals in love, they were friends first. Rafael also couldn’t resist teasing Dave, which lightened the atmosphere and helped them all get along well.
Although Dave and Rafael were not as attentive as Leo in serving Hera, they still made sure to offer her food. While eating, Dave couldn’t help but ask, “Hera, do you need help dealing with the scandal targeting you on the internet?” He then placed a plate of escargot meat, separated from its shells, in front of Hera for her to take some if she wished.
Rafael took Hera’s plate of steak and replaced it with his own, which he had already cut into bite-sized pieces. This gesture allowed her to focus on eating without having to handle the food herself. After swapping the plates, he observed Hera’s face, slightly flushed with gratitude for being treated so well—like a queen—where everything she needed and wanted was being attentively provided by either Rafael or Dave.
