Chapter 368: Chapter 368 The Real Offer 2
“Wait, let me check something.” The manager’s frown deepened, and although it wasn’t clear who his frustration was directed at, it was evident that he was genuinely upset. He muted his phone and turned to Bry’s father. “My subordinate, who was sent to make the offer, mentioned that he was a bit delayed in arriving at the venue. By the time he got there, you were already leaving, but he managed to catch up and speak with your daughter. He presented the offer, but instead of considering it, he was dismissed rather rudely.” The manager looked visibly uncomfortable, as if he had just learned something unsettling.
The disrespect his subordinate experienced was partially directed at him, and despite his good upbringing, he couldn’t help but feel angered by the account of how his subordinate had been called “cheap” and rudely dismissed. Although he had a favorable impression of Bry’s father, it wasn’t yet firmly established, and he was only extending him some leeway because of Hera’s involvement.
He turned his gaze to Hera, seeking her perspective on the situation. He suspected that, like him, Hera might have initially thought his subordinate was trying to cheat by offering a lower amount and pocketing the difference—an all-too-common form of embezzlement. Instead of discovering deceit on his subordinate’s part, he was confronted with something even more infuriating. It felt as though he had been slapped twice, and the sting was palpable.
Hera, Bry’s father was equally taken aback. Before either Hera or Bry’s father could react, Bry, who had been silent up until now, leaped onto his chair with righteous indignation. “Sir! I only have a brother, not a sister, and my brother and mother had to stay back in the village to care for the horses while my father and I went to the venue with Sister Hera and the rest of the Variety Show crew and guests!” Bry’s eyes flashed with defiance as he looked at the manager, silently conveying, “Don’t slander us.”
The manager was clearly startled, realizing there might have been a major misunderstanding. He knew he needed to clarify the situation, especially with Hera present, and he didn’t want to appear as though there was corruption under his watch. He unmuted the call and spoke sternly, “Are you certain you spoke with the owner’s daughter and didn’t mistakenly assume she was his daughter?” His voice was firm, conveying his seriousness. The subordinate on the other end also sounded more serious, reflecting the gravity of the situation.
“Sir, you know how meticulous I am. I don’t rely on assumptions. I verified her connection to the owner first; she claimed he was her father and stated they weren’t interested in selling the horse for anything less than a significant offer. That’s why I specified our offer and even the maximum amount we could provide, urging them to consider it seriously.”
“I hoped her attitude would change when she heard our offer. Initially, I thought her rudeness stemmed from someone offering a mere $70,000 for their champion horse, which was quite insulting. I tried to show sincerity by indicating our willingness to negotiate, but instead, she sneered and called me cheap before dismissing me.” The subordinate sounded hurt and infuriated but he still kept his cool while recounting the incident.
“I even followed their party for a while and managed to take a picture of the same woman. She looked beautiful, but she came across as quite unkind.” The subordinate didn’t forget to add this information.
And the manager conveyed the information to everyone at the table, and when Hera heard it, she thinks she already knew who it was. Who could be so mean to say something like that and belittle $5-10 million offer? Couldn’t it only be Minerva? But why she did it? Maybe a retaliation to make sure that Bry’s family would enjoy such money because she felt vindictive? The reason? Of course, unknown and Minerva could just be so mean that she wanted to not let anyone have a good time.
Though Hera was reluctant to entertain such thoughts, Minerva’s actions had consistently exhibited these tendencies. When the manager mentioned that his subordinate had managed to take a picture, Hera signaled for him to have the subordinate send it over for confirmation.
Moments later, the subordinate sent the picture, and the manager quickly opened it. Upon seeing the image, he stared at it, then at Bry’s father, and exploded at his subordinate. “How could you have mistaken them for being related?!” he fumed, clearly frustrated and angry.
The subordinate, sounding apologetic and almost pouting, replied, “I thought she might have inherited her beauty from her mother. I didn’t want to make assumptions, but I couldn’t pry into their family affairs.”
Still fuming, the manager pushed his phone to the center of the table, its screen displaying the picture. Without needing to get closer, everyone could see who it was. Shock swept over the group as they realized it wasn’t Minerva, but her frequent confrontations with Hera during the Variety Show made all of them believe that it was her behind this misunderstanding.
The truth hit them with an unexpected jolt. The flaming red hair and striking aquamarine eyes unmistakably belonged to Alice Quinn. It was clear from the picture that she was the only person in it, not just a background figure or an incidental presence.
In the photo, Alice was glaring at Hera with clear hostility while Hera’s back was turned, boarding Bry’s father’s truck.
“Ah!!! Isn’t this the other witch who always gets in Sister Hera’s way?!” Bry exclaimed, almost climbing onto the table to get a closer look at the phone. His father quickly grabbed him by the collar and pulled him back into his seat, shooting an apologetic look at everyone for Bry’s unruly behavior. He instinctively reached for the back of Bry’s head to give him a gentle smack, but Bry, anticipating the move, raised his hands to protect himself. “Dad! I’m just defending our family’s honor! There’s no way I’d have a witch for a sister!” Bry said indignantly, nearly grinding his teeth in his seat.
“You know this girl?” The manager wanted to clarify and looked at Bry.
But this time, it was Dave who responded with a sarcastic tone. “Indeed, we do,” he said, rubbing the back of Hera’s hand with his thumb. “Hera and that girl both participated in a Variety Show that was filmed in their village.” He gestured towards Bry and his father. “After seeing Hera’s impressive horsemanship, Uncle asked her to represent them in the Equestrian race. The Variety Show used it as a highlight, and of course, the other guests, including that girl, were also there to ‘show support.'” Dave’s scoff emphasized his disdain for the term ‘show support.’
“Maybe she felt overshadowed and bitter because Hera was the center of attention at the time,” Dave suggested. “It’s possible she took out her frustration on your subordinate, intercepting him and dismissing his offer. She might have been determined to deny Bry and his family a good life, particularly because they welcomed Hera but not her. Despite knowing Bry’s uncle was struggling, she may have refused to help them simply out of spite.”
