Chapter 115: Quack Doctor
Meanwhile, the alleged gullible businessman who owned much of the Empire’s industrial businesses could only watch as the chipmunk ‘cleaned’ every nook and cranny.
It was a fascinating sight.
Xavier thought it would take several trips, but it was over before an hour passed. And had they been allowed to zoom past everything, it would’ve likely taken less time.
Luca kept swaying around as he reveled in the feeling of not being too poor. At least now, if anyone needed a sudden revival, he likely would have enough funds.
But even then, he hoped not to reach that point because they weren’t affordable by any means, and what if they hurt or left side effects?
D-29’s prompt that the area was free of contamination made Luca turn toward Xavier.
He was just about to tell him they could leave when he noticed how Xavier suddenly tensed.
It was after reading an urgent message sent by Deputy Officer Curtis.
The Marshal’s spiritual imbalance suddenly progressed while they contained the contaminated goods. Apparently, he had been siphoning the fruits for reallocation to those with severe cases.
It would have been fine had he not needed to use his abilities to blanket the corruption while they were cryofreezing the port.
But the sudden use depleted him of the energy he had just gained, which resulted in a relapse.
“What’s wrong?” Luca asked, noticing the worried look on Xavier’s usually stoic face.
“It’s the Marshal. His condition has gotten worse, and the HQ is preparing for an evacuation just in case his condition progresses.”
“Is it already that bad?” Luca was initially surprised, but he remembered the articles he had seen. If you asked him, it certainly resembled those Espers going on a rampage.
It was just that, in this case, the corruption was an external influence that affected the person’s internal balance.
But what exactly was madness to begin with?
Luca wasn’t actually sure.
All he’s only ever seen were the devastating effects of an Esper rampage. And because he never had the chance to actually check the bodies of those maddened or rampaging Espers, he just couldn’t make a direct comparison.
It was a shame.
Really, it was. It was a shame for a world that could’ve been saved.
However, that was that—just a could’ve been.
But this? This was now his reality. And right now, Luca could feel Xavier’s energy in turmoil.
It was clear that he was bothered far more than he was letting on. It was something the mountain giant wouldn’t be able to hide from a Guide who’d seen his body in different states.
Luca’s fists clenched as he decided on what to do. On the one hand, he was capable of helping, but on the other hand, he was afraid of repeating his past.
What if something like that happens again?
Will he be imprisoned again?
But what about the Marshal and everyone around him?
“Host, do you want to get out of here?” D-29 asked as the Host’s vitals didn’t seem so good.
Luca really wanted to flee.

But flee to where?
And flee from whom?
From the people who have been nothing but nice to him?
It was a turmoil like no other. He wasn’t sure if he liked the idea of having a choice, but apparently, that was harder because it gave him control over someone’s life.
Xavier watched the conflicted Luca practically bruise his lip over this.
Like a small animal, Luca tried to look everywhere but Xavier’s face.
What if he was crazy enough to drag him there to do something?
How would he fight back against someone much stronger?
But none of that happened.
“I’m sorry.” Luca was surprised to hear Xavier breaking the silence.
“I said I’d protect you, but I haven’t made the place around you safe enough.” Xavier didn’t even have to ask because Luca’s despair and shock were evident in his face.
Luca didn’t expect an apology.
He expected to be dragged over like cattle so that he could do something about it.
But all Xavier asked was permission to send the fruits he had given him to his uncle.
That was it.
Tears started forming in Luca’s eyes, and he had to ask because, somewhere in his heart, he hoped it would be different this time.
“Xavier, are you not mad? Or… disappointed?”
Large, wary eyes looked up at Xavier, who was wondering why he would be mad or disappointed.
“I’m sad. But we all have been. And I had prepared myself for the same fate. I was next, you know? But you came, and I managed to survive.” Xavier had a helpless smile.
“So tell me, why would I be mad or disappointed when I was already given a second chance?”
Xavier flicked Luca’s forehead, effectively waking up the little chipmunk who was about to have a crying fit.
“But you know I have the ability, and yet…”
Xavier thought that Luca was really too pure for the world, so he opted to say, “It is precisely because of this that I’m not mad or disappointed. You’re the type to do everything possible. So, obviously, it’s likely because there’s no other solution.”
Xavier only wanted to give Luca an out because his expression was obvious. The little chipmunk was conflicted beyond belief when he didn’t even owe anything to the world.
But instead of giving him a leeway, the little money grubber felt even worse.
Because he might really have a way! It may not be guaranteed, but it was a significant possibility. He was a Guide, after all!
This solidified D-29 and Luca’s belief that Xavier may be too innocent. Luca felt that Xavier had too much trust in him, who was just a stranger up until recently.
They were actually right! Xavier was really gullible!
How was he supposed to leave someone like that in this evil world? Luca’s tears still formed, but for a totally different reason.
“Host, do you want to help the Marshal?” D-29 asked, and frankly, Luca really wanted to, not because of the Marshal himself but because of Xavier, who had to be kept safe.
But he didn’t even have to wrack his brain because D-29 reminded him of something crucial that he had just missed, “What about the Guiding Pills? Won’t that help, Host?”
It was an honest question from the little system, but Luca was suddenly revitalized. If he didn’t have to appear as a Guide, then maybe it was possible to help like this?
Xavier watched the sudden change in Luca’s expression, and he was partly hopeful but mostly afraid.
Whenever the little chipmunk thought of something insane, he had that very same look.
“Xavier, what if… what if I have a way? But I’m not completely certain about it?” Luca asked, this time looking at Xavier’s face, trying to gauge his reaction to what would really sound like an insane suggestion.
But to Xavier’s credit, he expected it to be insane, and the last time the shorty said something like this, he actually almost died—but it worked.
What if it was the only way to really fix this?
Luca actually thought that Xavier would disagree, not wanting to risk it by listening to the methodologies of a possible quack doctor.
But then Xavier said something very unexpected. “Try it. At this rate, anything would be better than nothing.”
However, what he thought was a done deal continued with something that shook the little money grubber’s heart.
Xavier actually took time to respond because he was considering compensation for this little chipmunk, who was willing to risk his neck despite all logic telling him not to.
There was really nothing much he could give him that he didn’t already have.
Well, maybe there was one.
But then, after this, save for the Empire itself, there may be nothing else to give.
Luca received a prompt on his terminal and then saw numbers that he never thought could possibly exist.
“!!!”
The little money grubber saw it and figured he might leave the world before the marshal did.
His brain popped, and the small animal vowed to succeed even if he used all the revival pills available.
