Chapter 117: Favoritism?
Ideally, only one hustler should’ve been there. The other one should’ve been hiding in a secured location while waiting for news.
But who made the little money grubber too protective of his investments?
And for all he knew, his newest investment might be dead somewhere or having a terrible fight for his life.
What if he got deducted money for creating such a painful treatment plan?
Luca couldn’t take it anymore and decided to pop out to check. But he only did it knowing it should only be Xavier and the Marshal in the room.
Xavier frankly predicted that something like this would happen. This little chipmunk could never really be stopped. He always wanted to see things and was especially curious about anything that could explode.
What a crazy guy.
“You shouldn’t be outside. Didn’t we talk about it already?” Xavier sighed as he attempted to chastise the little Daredevil.
“I know, but you were taking too long. What if something has gone wrong, and you needed help with the inv… patient.” Luca corrected himself hurriedly.
Besides, Luca wanted to see the effects of the pills for himself.
This was a unique take where the Marshal was used as the guinea pig for something so dangerous.
But it was better than having no chance of survival at all.
However, the Marshal was actually going in and out of consciousness and could hear snippets of conversation.
He was trying to hold on for dear life to try and reign in the possible explosion while everyone was presumably evacuating.
Xavier actually let them all evacuate since they weren’t sure if this was going to work. And it was much better if no one else saw anything. He just made sure to reassure everyone that he was going to leave as soon as possible.
He just needed time with his Uncle.
Time and a lot of luck.
“Which pills have you used?” Luca was curious and scared. The Marshal looked much worse than Xavier when he was overrun by corruption, yet Xavier said it was already much better than earlier.
Just how bad was it earlier?
Close to zombification bad.
“Two low-grades and one mid-grade. I noticed the corruption receded with every pill I had him take.”
Luca could actually see several pieces of medical equipment attached to the Marshal, but he couldn’t interpret what the lines meant and had to ask D-29 for assistance.
“Host, the Marshal’s vitals seem fine for now. It’s just that the scan shows a congregation of the corruption as a mass by the abdomen.”
Hmm.
“Xavier, could you try using the other pills?”
The tortuous nephew complied, hoping that it would affect the corruption.
And it did. The two mad scientists actually braced for what they expected to be writhing in pain or convulsions, but none of that happened.
“???”
By these two’s expressions, you wouldn’t know if they preferred a screaming mess or whatever this was. But surely, they didn’t expect to be greeted with serenity.

In fact, Xavier wondered why it was so different from his time when he felt like he was knocking on death’s door with every breath.
Well, that was because he used a Stamina recovery pill rather than a Guiding pill. But he wouldn’t know that and could only look at Luca as if there was implied favoritism.
Was it because he didn’t pay money upfront before the treatment?
However, Xavier wouldn’t know that he got a different kind of healing that required a lot of XXX from the little chipmunk who wanted to cry out of frustration.
But maybe, if he had paid upfront, they wouldn’t have ended up tied for life. Who knows? It was a speculation that could only be pondered by the likes of Sid, who saw the whole gruesome scene.
The Marshal’s face started looking much better, and the experimenters could finally stop holding their breaths.
But Luca wanted to make sure and decided to see if the Marshal’s meridians were doing much better.
It was just that before he could do it, Xavier gripped his hand in a gesture that was also foreign to the white-haired wolf.
It was awkward.
Because Xavier didn’t do it consciously.
He just suddenly felt like stopping something instinctively.
“Sorry.” Xavier removed his hand, finger by finger, because he found it very difficult to let go.
Luca, on the other hand, thought he needed to apologize because he had forgotten about his exclusive employment.
He knew that Guides and Espers usually maintained a one-to-one partnership because the Espers were highly territorial of their Guides.
It was one reason why the other Guides were insistent on him being kept far away from any and all Espers. He was such a tempting fruit, especially to those of the S-class, and felt like a threat to everyone else.
“Oh, I’m sorry. I forgot about our exclusivity!” Luca’s face puffed up, hoping that he wouldn’t be sacked for such a mistake. It would really hurt him to lose access to the account he planned to stare at once they got back from here.
“About that—” Xavier now wondered why it really felt off when this guy talked about their relationship. The more he heard about it, the more it sounded like he was some overbearing employer.
But he didn’t get to ask because the Marshal started coughing and stirring.
Luca figured it was that extreme thirst that came with the dried-up pathways and instructed Xavier to use the spiritual water sparingly at first.
Because it would hurt.
Thankfully, he was not as bad as him, who was as dry as a desert and didn’t have to experience the same type of burning pain.
It was just that these two were in for a different kind of pain when they figured they could leave after the Marshal stabilized. It would do them no good to be found there once some people realize the oddity of things.
Xavier felt very relieved and ready to flee like a thief when his wrist was gripped by the Marshal, who now had one eye open.
The little chipmunk gasped while Xavier stood frozen.
One Imperial Crown Prince realized he could never steal or commit a crime like this. He was not meant for the life of a thug.
Why did he always get caught in the weirdest situations and look like a confirmed assailant, even when he meant well?
“Xavier.” His voice was husky and clearly fresh from the earlier struggle.
“Just what did you do to me?” It was a very loaded question in Luca’s mind.
And he could only scoot over to hide behind Xavier’s towering build while praying not to be noticed.
“Hi, Uncle, good to see you.”
Yeah.
The Crown Prince could only come up with that after being caught red-handed.
He had never been one to do questionable things save for having another identity to be able to assist on the battlefield. But lately, why does it feel like he’s been committing several crimes?
“Save that for the other soldiers. Tell me what you’ve done.”
The Marshal wasn’t angry by any means; it was just that he sounded like it because of his strained vocal cords. He merely wanted to know how he was still alive.
But the two guilty budding criminals hadn’t been able to rehearse anything. And Luca could only depend on someone mysterious enough.
It was this moment that would catapult one low-key duchy back into the Empire’s map.
