Chapter 138: Magic Word
Luca could only describe that extreme gasp as one where he metaphorically called back his soul.
He thought he was going to die.
But if he asked Xavier and the bony elders, they’d tell him that he practically did. Because the space quite literally dimmed the moment it happened.
Then, like an ancient steam engine, Luca started back up again, which really gave Xavier a fright.
He was sure Luca would’ve died had they missed the time because his contract flashed.
And for a moment, it felt so cold that he, an Ice Elementalist, could feel the chilling pain it brought.
Was that what it felt like for the Life Contract to break?
He wanted to think about it but realized that Luca was arching his back and clawing at his neck.
Was he feeling suffocated?
Xavier rushed over but hesitated to touch him because the elders were adamant about it affecting a person’s cultivation.
For one, the Imperial Crown Prince wasn’t sure what this cultivation was all about, but it looked like the elders were sure of it, and so far, they had been right.
Luca’s skin prickled, sweat dripping down his temples as he clutched his chest at the burning sensation that was coursing through his body.
The little chipmunk was clutching at his clothes, trying to rip apart whatever was blocking him from feeling the air around him.
But instead of feeling relief, the heat just intensified as his core was ignited.
Was he being burned alive? But for all his memories of explosions and fires, Luca had always managed to survive.
Then why did it feel like he was going to burn and die this time?
Was this because he’s not allowed to have a good life?
Luca was writhing in pain both physically and emotionally, and Xavier couldn’t take it anymore as the chipmunk was close to clawing his own neck.
A soothing balm.
Or the perfect popsicle.
The little animal who was burning everywhere suddenly felt a chill around him.
It was like a lifeline, and Luca could only arch toward this refreshing sensation.
He felt like gasping to inhale the cold, so when the popsicle moved, Luca felt deflated.
And in a desperate attempt, he nearly flung himself onto this new hope.
This caught Xavier off guard as he only meant to unclasp Luca’s collar and was trying to avoid any skin-to-skin contact in case it messed with the breakthrough process.
So he tried evading the small animal’s jerks, which he thought was a response to his being near him.
The result was a very frustrated chipmunk who had to beg for relief.
“Ple…”
Xavier hunkered down when it seemed like Luca was about to say something, only for his face to be gripped.

Finally!
The little firewood touched the glacier and felt the possibility of survival. And all he needed to do was to stick to it.
There was no frostbite, and even if there was, he wouldn’t be able to tell with this pain.
Xavier’s face was grabbed like a ball, and the force of the tug off-balanced the originally careful giant.
“!!!”
His concern was originally the breakthrough process, but he realized what was happening when Luca’s hands touched his face.
The little animal was burning up as if flames would erupt from him anytime soon!
Luca was not only having a breakthrough but was awakening his bloodline abilities.
And if Xavier was correct, then this guy needed more than just an open collar.
Awakening elemental abilities was a horrifying experience for Xavier.
The young Prince nearly froze himself solid, effectively blocking air from getting into his system until he eventually passed out. Only then did it cut off the formation of a small glacier, which could’ve killed him.
So, Xavier was right to be concerned and figured that Luca was so uncomfortable that an ice Elementalist elicited such a reaction.
Then he started using his abilities to soothe the ailing dragon, who was now like a fire-breathing one.
Luca clung to the feeling of relief and managed to even out his breathing.
And this was how they stayed until Xavier received an urgent message from Kyle, eventually waking the little chipmunk, who was sensitive to the iceberg’s movements.
At this point, two survivalists and one newly minted potato sack were dancing around the energy blades radiating from the Duke.
Initially, they thought of tanking it like they tanked Princess Kira’s blades but realized they valued life when it cut part of a chair.
It wasn’t like the Duke was attacking them. If anything, he was also surprised by the sudden overflow of his abilities, which nearly scared Butler Gary into an early grave.
Of course, they would be alarmed, thinking that the Duke was expending his last energy into this emotional outburst.
But the problem was the Duke wasn’t even making an effort.
He was just gutted.
And extremely emotional.
Who wouldn’t be when their precious son was missing?
Thankfully, one survivalist loved life so much that he thought of begging for help, which came in the form of a notification from their saviors.
“Your Grace!” Kyle shouted, trying to overcome the whizzing sounds as he performed his most glorious feat as of yet.
The poor guy had to balance a blonde potato sack as he evaded the bursts of energy blades, all while attempting to catch the Duke’s attention.
“Your Grace! I got permission from your son!” Kyle shouted, putting his life on the line as he enunciated, ‘Son.’
He was actually preparing to throw the mop at Jax if the Duke went berserk and attacked him instead of stopping, but apparently, the word “son” was enough to halt man-made disasters.
But maybe he was getting ahead of himself.
Duke Leander’s selective hearing zeroed in on the word ‘son’ and nearly went slack after the unintended release of abilities that hadn’t been used in so many years.
But even dropping to the ground wouldn’t stop him from hearing news about his boy.
And Kyle just hoped he didn’t have to do another round of that.
“We can bring you to him now,” Kyle said as he breathed a sigh of relief.
But maybe they shouldn’t have.
Because there was really nothing worse than learning of your son’s disappearance, only to discover how he disappeared at the hands of a predator.
However, there are things far more catastrophic than those, such as confirming that your son was the predator!
