Chapter 168: Welcome!
To be perfectly honest, Theo felt like he would follow his father’s and older brother’s footsteps.
He thought he’d likely not return if he entered this particular guild base, given how suspicious it looked.
It was just that he didn’t think it was because he wouldn’t want to leave.
Noah felt a bit of doubt. Especially when that classmate, Kyle, sprung out to them out of nowhere, practically scaring Theo into jumping up.
“Oh, sorry about that!” Said Kyle with an apologetic smile.
“Theo Belgrave?” Kyle looked at the student, who flinched in surprise.
“And you’re Noah from class, right?”
Noah was surprised that Kyle knew his name, or maybe it was because he did stupid things during the first half of the month.
If anything, he was worried that his tagging along would decrease Theo’s chances, but even after waiting, Kyle didn’t seem to show any violent reactions.
Of course not. If even the people from the Federation couldn’t crumble his resolve, then there was no way he would crumble when faced with a student.
Unless it was his guildmates.
Those people were unhinged and just won’t allow him to build enough peace and calm to last a day.
So, this was a change of pace.
And he gets to do the honor of shocking people.
But really, he just wanted the honors, not an emergency event in which he’d have to call in first responders to deal with their supposed client!
Theo, the poor client actually thought his fears were becoming a reality when they were greeted with an empty shack that even creaked here an there.
And suspicious, as a description was not cutting it anymore. This screamed—not even spoke—dangerous.
Like they were going to be abducted.
But then suddenly, there was this glowing double door.
Well, glowing because it was basically the light source of the place. But what was alarming was how he didn’t remember seeing that door earlier.
So, when the student asked them to follow, alarm bells rang through his mind because this was how people from those films get kidnapped, or worse, killed!
But his friend, the referrer, continued walking the few steps to the door, seemingly unstoppable in his path.
Theo had no choice but to follow.
And in hindsight, Theo was so glad that Noah was a tad bit crazy!
When Kyle pushed the doors open, the two very skeptical clients were greeted by the sudden brightness, and they momentarily had to squint.
But when they opened their eyes, what lay before them was a scene so enchanting that they thought they’d passed on into a different life.
Theo forgot to breathe and had to be smacked in the back because his eyes were starting to bug out.
But that was because Noah wouldn’t understand how the part-Siren student saw the waters and was this close to jumping over.
Not to mention Noah, who lived outside the dusty outskirts marketplace, who felt like he was being punched every time cool, clean air entered his nostrils.
What the heck was this place?

“Wh—where are we?” Asked Noah, whose voice cracked for a moment.
“Our Guild’s office. The Dungeon Guardians welcome you. So, please, head over to the office right this way.” Kyle smiled, pleased that the client survived the first part of the initiation.
At least the client didn’t pass out during his turn.
He just wasn’t sure about the next part. After all, they weren’t planning to be so covert, not in terms of wealth.
They had all agreed to use the Duchy of Kyros as a cover for their behavior.
At first, the little money grubber was definitely against using money. But when his father said it would look weird for the returning Duke to be so stingy, Luca realized that penny-pinching might affect his father’s image.
And so the little dragon sat on the couch that felt too expensive to his little butt while trying to pass off everything as normal.
Or as normal as possible until Jax and Ollie started serving ‘refreshments,’ which, instead of refreshing the clients, almost scared them to death.
Were they going to be asked to pay for these?
While both couldn’t use visual resonance, it was apparent when they swallowed the offered snacks.
Noah, at first, thought about regurgitating it because who would have the money to pay for this?!
Certainly, not two poor guys who could barely afford to study had their tuitions not been subsidized as future soldiers.
Theo was of the same mind but was more concerned that these guys wouldn’t be willing to take a poor man’s job.
And while his dangerous offer was allocated a good amount of credits, they actually couldn’t offer that much in other rewards, which was likely why the other guilds couldn’t prioritize him.
Only they didn’t expect to face such an odd group of people.
Luca, the guild leader, was concerned about their reception as the clients looked despondent instead of pleased about their services.
And he was concerned that they weren’t being hospitable enough.
Ollie and Xavier understood why.
The mop actually felt like watching himself when he first saw the apples offered by his good brother. But he figured that if the plans they made with the Duke were to be implemented, they’ve got to start advertising somewhere!
Meanwhile, the observant husband noticed Luca’s extremely tense back and figured he had to do something when the chipmunk clutched on the part of Xavier’s clothing.
“These are courtesy of our guild, and there’s no need to concern yourselves with the refreshments. If anything, we’d like to hear about the job request you have for us.”
Xavier tried to be as relaxed as possible, but his piercing eyes didn’t help the clients, who felt like choking on the chips they were eating with extreme care.
Theo flinched.
Because as much as he didn’t want to prolong the agony of waiting, he also didn’t want to return to being hopeless.
Right now, he still had hope because he hadn’t really told them about the mission and the measly rewards he could offer, but what happens the moment they learn about it?
He looked around, trying to cement a scene he’d likely never see again. And even figured that maybe his grandmother would’ve liked to see this clean body of water.
But he didn’t expect a different kind of reception.
