Chapter 169: First Job
When Noah noticed Theo’s hesitance, he had to nod over to him to encourage his friend.
The shack really looked sketchy but if this was how the people of DG rolled, then, really, they were likely Theo’s last hope.
Especially when the people before them didn’t flinch when his friend mentioned Kestrel Point, a known planet in the Contaminated Zone.
If anything, Noah was surprised to see Luca’s eyes widening.
Fear?
No.
That couldn’t be fear?
Excitement?
Was he a thrill seeker?
But no. He was a money grubber.
And the little money grubber’s hand clutched at Xavier as he was so excited he felt like flying off the handle.
However, he returned to land the moment he heard about the mission objectives after Theo prefaced the mission’s difficulty.
They were supposed to look for family members who went missing to find some Jade Vine for their ailing grandmother.
Luca, who had just gotten his family back, was suddenly distraught. Xavier figured that this little guy would likely take the mission even without the corruption bonus.
So he asked Luca, “Do you want to take it?”
It wasn’t accusatory, nor was it placating. Xavier was really giving him the choice.
And Luca nodded.
He had no desire to turn anything down, and even if the client went in to ask them to look for a missing cat, he was likely going to agree.
Obviously, Theo and Noah watched this interaction and their hearts were gripped with suspense until Luca nodded, it’s just that Theo hasn’t shown the compensation he could offer.
“Uhm… I’m sorry I forgot to mention this earlier, but I’d like to be honest. There’s only this for compensation.” He showed his terminal with notices for 50,000 credits and over 1 million in Star Coins.
“This is all that we have right now, and I know that Kestrel Point has nearly been run over with corruption, but…” Theo trailed off, scared of looking at the faces of the people from DG.
Because the measly reward turned off most of the other guilds.
But had he looked up, he probably would’ve seen the guild leader’s glinting eyes and almost glowing face.
Xavier could only swear under his breath.
Luca heard corruption and looked like he was in love.
Did he have to come back bathing in it?
But in the first place, why did he feel threatened?
“We’re going to take it,” Luca said as he blinded all of their guild members into agreeing.
Who could even turn him down at this point?
Certainly not the Imperial Crown Prince who felt the sudden need to go to the battlefield.

What was he even thinking?
Certainly not thoughts that matched the current mindset of the clients who felt like weeping.
“Are…are you sure?” Theo asked hesitantly, because what if he heard it wrong and got his hopes so high only to realize he’d gone and imagined things?
It wouldn’t be the first time, after all.
But it seems like he really heard right.
And the trembling Theo bowed down to the people before him while trying to fight away the eye irritation that was taking over his face.
“Thank you, thank you very much!” He wasn’t even sure if they’d find his family, but someone taking the job was surely a step closer than before.
Xavier nodded to Kyle, who figured it was now his turn to take notes.
Luca was surprised. He thought he would have to listen to the whole thing until he was pulled over to discuss other things while Kyle dealt with the specifics.
“Are we not supposed to hear the rest?” asked Luca, who wasn’t sure what to do.
“They’re going to talk about coordinates, last-seen places, and the specifics of the gear they were probably holding.”
Oh.
Yeah. He wouldn’t be the best person to deal with those as he’s only ever been to Planet Nova and the Capital.
“But instead of that, there’s likely something more important you could be dealing with.”
“Me?” Luca was surprised that there were other more important things.
“Jade Vine,” Xavier said and come to think of it, Luca’s brain ignored it earlier because he wasn’t familiar with the herb.
“But what can I do about this Jade Vine?” Asked the confused little chipmunk.
“You have it on the Trove. It’s got a different name, but if we’re basing it on its look, then wouldn’t it be the same?”
“!”
“Really? Maybe we could ask Elder Wei for confirmation?”
Thankfully, they would. Eventually starting a chain reaction that was far beyond their first client’s expectations.
Even as Theo and Noah left, they couldn’t help but glance back at this office.
While they offered to come to Kestrel Point, Xavier cautioned them against it because they weren’t licensed and would likely be too emotionally unstable to concentrate.
Especially Theo, who wasn’t a combatant.
And he understood.
It was just that he couldn’t help but be drawn to these people who treated them with kindness, especially after everyone had been rebuffing him for the last few days.
“We’ll be leaving first thing tomorrow and will likely keep in contact to report our findings. And if you remember any other important information, please don’t hesitate to reach out,” Kyle said as he led them back the same way they had gone.
But before they left, Noah had to ask Kyle, “Hey, will it really be okay? I can’t help but ask because I was the one that recommended your guild… but this mission—”
“While we can’t say anything about the mission objectives, we should be fine. We’ll try our best. So, in the meantime, kindly wait patiently.” Kyle answered.
If anything, it wasn’t them they needed to be worried about.
It’s the corruption who was about to witness what looked like judgment day.
The people of his guild were crazy.
Not to mention the little mop who apparently felt like he couldn’t be left behind just because he was a mechanic.
Kyle felt another headache coming in. And it was probably 10 years off his projected lifespan.
