Chapter 189: Allotment
D-29 Felt it had been successful in today’s pitch and was waiting for their reactions.
At first, the little system was obviously hoping for gleeful cries and a few applauses.
But nothing.
Okay…
Maybe it wasn’t as ground-breaking as the system imagined it to be, but it couldn’t be that bad, right?
However, it’s been a moment of awkward silence, and still nothing.
“…”
And by now, D-29 was already okay with at least getting violent reactions!
At least someone would be reacting!
Because, as of the moment, everyone looked odd, like they’ve all lagged like those elder systems that always took a while to process.
So, the anxious system had to call forth Sid, who was now being interrogated for saying that this was a really good idea to pitch.
“What did you expect them to say after you’ve told them about solving part of the Empire’s biggest crisis?” Sid sighed as he remembered having the same reaction when D-29 kept on pinging him for this.
“Then why are they like that?”
“Just give them a moment.”
“Look, just yesterday, the Masters kept on malfunctioning so badly that I had been torn between a glittering sea and a tsunami.” Explained Sid as he recalled how different the Masters were last night.
They’ll eventually cope.
Hopefully.
Because the people were really left loading as they tried thinking of the implications.
Luca, in particular, had singing birds in his head as he imagined going into the light to ascend.
How could he not when this meant being able to collect more CP?!
And even better, others could do it too!
Then he remembered one important tidbit and decided to come back down to Nova.
And Sid was alerted just as this happened.
The new Master’s sea of consciousness was tranquil, and this extreme tranquility was one that he feared more than the storms.
Because it usually was a sign of impending crime!
Sid noticed that whenever his new Master decided to do something alarming, it would always come after this kind of tranquility.
“D-29, just how many of these cubes do we have?” Luca asked, in a tone so measured it barely gave away the intense vibrations in his heart.
“!”
“As of now, there are five cubes, Host!” Immediately responded the little system that had been waiting for so long.
“Thank you, D-29. I wouldn’t know where we all would be without you!”

Luca was eternally grateful as his ears rang.
*Ka-ching! Ka-ching!*
Then, the Host grinned.
And the little system was all pops and poppers, even as Sid noticed the unusual smile sported by the new Master.
Not his usual polite, well-mannered, responsible smile.
No.
This was the grin of a man on the edge of financial ruin, grasping at the single, beautiful lifeline that had been thrown his way.
Five.
He had five Purification Chamber containment cubes.
Five beautiful, corruption-storing, CP-generating artifacts.
And now he had to decide who to bless with this divine burden.
But Luca failed to realize that this was no burden to anyone born in this time and age.
And there was no need to decide as he was instead overwhelmed by the number of volunteers!
“Huh?! Are you saying that you’re all willing to use one to collect corruption?” Luca was astonished at this unexpected reception.
More than willing.
And one Prince was especially in dire need of one or all.
While it took them a while to recover and at one point in time, Jax almost let go of Tortie in shock, the moment they heard ‘five’, a sense of foreboding came before them.
Competition.
And that pulled the stunned people out of their reverie.
Even Ollie volunteered but decided to let go of the spot because he knew he wanted to dissect it instead and might end up wasting the opportunity.
So, Xavier, Kyle, and Jax eventually ended up with one each. Leaving him with two to offer to the Duchy.
Thankfully so.
Because when the filial child got the chance to ask his doting father if he’d like to have one, the father nearly burst into tears.
The Duke could not believe such grace and felt so proud that he had one until Butler Gary was also asked if he wanted a cube.
“Tsk.” Huffed the Duke which was ignored by the now lit-up butler.
Now it was time for the loyal caretaker to weep, as their Young Lord apparently thought about asking him because he remembered his stint as a soldier before retiring with the Duke.
And as usual, Steward Han figured that he might also need to dabble a bit on mechas to be fortunate enough to receive such an offer.
But the steward was in for a surprise when Luca specifically asked for his logistical skills. And he couldn’t believe that the Young Lord would consider remembering such a tidbit.
And Lo and behold, it was a favor that everyone back in the Duchy would probably be envious of!
Steward Han puffed his chest and shiny head when Luca asked him to oversee the next Star Mall Shop Update.
“Young Lord, do you mean it? Yo—Your Shop?!” Stammered Steward Han, who could only look at the pouting Duke and the stunned Butler with beaming pride.
“Ah, Yes, Steward Han.” Luca scratched at his cheek as he nodded.
“I apologize for this, really. It’s just that I’ve already started receiving pleas in multiple languages and in different forms…”
“But with our instructors being particular with our classes, it’s going to be difficult to send the packages on time.”
When he started this, after all, he only thought of doing it to earn enough funds to survive after leaving the Academy.
But he couldn’t exactly say such a thing unless he wanted his father to start crying on the spot.
So, all he did was smile and hope that the people from the Duchy were willing to help.
But as expected, they were. And they were all beside themselves with wanting to volunteer to help with the Empire’s most popular Star Mall store.
Now, now. Why would Steward Han let these brutes touch those delicate goods? What if they don’t even get to reach the buyers?
Therefore, the good steward reminded the Duke and the Butler that they had an even bigger duty and shouldn’t be messing with more things.
“Your Grace, while that is commendable, aren’t you now in charge of gathering Corruption Points for the Young Lord?”
It was a critical hit—one that made sense how ever they turned it in their minds.
And so they gave up going after the lucrative post.
Touché
Because they really wouldn’t be able to do their best, considering they were now planning on living in the wild!
It was just that they needed to check on their fighting conditions.
Especially checking on their long-unused but well-maintained mechas.
That night, the Duchy had again been reassembled into teams with a very surprising mission.
Looking for Corruption?
And Butler Han was going???
Yes.
Yes, he was.
And contrary to popular belief, his back wasn’t going to start creaking out the moment they went into the battlefield.
Not after all those times getting kicked by that old man!
