Chapter 192: Guardians?
Luca was all smiles amidst the heartache.
Because there was no use in crying about the fact that they were now extremely poor.
At least his father allowed them to put up the sanctuary by the Duchy.
But then again, he knew they would likely have to buy things for the space or at least prepare food for these beasts who would have to stay with them until they could be moved into the prospective sanctuary.
They just have to survive under the dictatorship of Tortie, the boss tortoise.
It was an unexpected development that shocked everyone who witnessed the little tortoise bossing around one giant manticore and four different primates of varying sizes.
Well, they did attempt to squash him first, so Tortie wasn’t in the wrong for retaliating.
And the guardian tortoise thought the same way.
He had been lounging as the humans walked around, bringing in things riddled with corruption.
He thought he could never understand why they wanted that in this place of potent energy until the different blobs started shedding the goo.
It was just like him.
Without the sparkly cannon to the mouth.
Unfair!
Obviously, it was because he wouldn’t fit in this chamber even if it were enlarged so many times over.
But Tortie had selective memory and wouldn’t let this perceived ‘injustice’ pass.
They were all beasts and must be treated the same way! Thought the guardian tortoise as he wriggled around on his silken coverings next to his banana smoothie and lettuce stash.
So he thought of ‘welcoming’ them but almost got stepped on as that blasted manticore attempted to gnaw at him.
Now, the result was a given, and by the time the pummelling ended, one tortoise rose above it all.
“Tortie, what happened here?” Asked that scary cannoneer who redeemed himself by ordering him to hoard his own food.
Hmph!
Luca definitely couldn’t understand, but it was evident that a one-way beating happened just as he returned from talking to his father.
But if that were the case, then wouldn’t this be a good thing?
Maybe Tortie can keep them in line?
However, here’s to hoping they won’t form a gang like Pan-pan and the Chicken Gang, who would extort more feed whenever they took chickens for food.
Thankfully, they would soon discover that it was really a little different from the chickies as the beasts lined up whenever Tortie plodded around them.
Now, Sid witnessed all of this and missed the days when the other guardian mechas would stand in attention whenever he strode to the command post.
But that was ages ago, and right now, he would be hard-pressed to find even one other guardian mecha in the Empire.
And maybe that was for the best, as he already had his hands full with just one system attempting to break the status quo.
D-29 was biding its time, waiting for the right moment to ask.
According to the dramas, one must wait for the opportune moment for monumental things, like announcing you’re pregnant or unveiling someone’s cheating records.

All of it must follow a proper course for maximum effect, and so was asking for favors that may be a little too big.
Like half a million CP-big.
Okay, maybe that wasn’t just a little too big.
But hear it out!
Technically, the Blueprint he needed was only 100,000CP; it was just that the materials to make it would cost around 400,000 CP unless alternatives were used.
But as of now, the little system wished to save itself from untested alternatives. Maybe once it got to enjoy being normal, it would be open to ‘suggestions.’
However, all of this would only mean something once it succeeded in convincing the Host.
But D-29 did not expect an unforeseen blockade that set it up for a path of failure!
That Dungeon-Linked Space upgrade was not in the original manual and was practically only found in cases of emergency and only after the Dungeon had met certain criteria.
Like assimilating another Dungeon.
Or when the number of useable Dungeons has fallen dangerously low.
And these were belated discoveries that only appeared when the prompt bypassed the shell-shocked little system.
But there it was, getting the budget that D-29 had been eyeing. And with the Host’s dangerously fluctuating vitals, it might not be a good time to ask for half a million CP.
It was just that the little system did not expect to hear the Host talking about mechas sooner than expected.
Because Sid ended up a mess after passing through the trials of Planet Eon-13.
This was the problem that they discovered as they went around collecting corruption.
While they were able to suck up the goo using the containment cubes, it didn’t mean that they got all of it as cleanly as Luca would vacuum everything up.
The damage was a little here and there, and the pilots were generally safe from being taken over by corruption.
However, the mechas faced an increasing risk of corrosion as they dealt with the stragglers.
After their eighth corruption run, during which they only targeted the goo, Luca had to force them to stop.
Sid had a few rough edges as a mecha that couldn’t be maintained normally, but he didn’t look this bad.
Like beaten-bad.
And he didn’t even get to fight much as they avoided beasts after learning that they’d have to house all of them temporarily until the sanctuary was set up.
It was so bad that even D-29 prompted a prayer for Sid’s repose.
But maybe the prayer should be directed toward the system, which was about to miss the perfect timing to plead for its case.
For Luca asked the trio to come back for mecha maintenance.
Xavier actually wanted to finish up the last bits but hesitated when he realized that the others also had mecha issues, albeit not as bad as his already beaten-up mecha.
But they really managed to lift the CP balance from absolute poverty and into a decent safety net.
Which made Luca nearly jump at Xavier, if not for the mechas who had traces of corruption that could be siphoned that beguiled the little chipmunk into diverting his trajectory.
And Kyle almost said a few words for the Captain, who clearly missed the opportunity, only for him to shut up when the same disappointed Prince managed to get a very sudden and very public smooch!
“!!!”
Granted, it was like a bird pecking at anything, but it was a bird that came over willingly.
And really, only Luca wasn’t surprised. For in his mind, he was just doing what seemed to energize the mountain giant best.
After all, it was Xavier who identified a smooch as a better alternative to a power hug!
Xavier malfunctioned and easily handed Sid over when asked to surrender his mecha for emergency maintenance.
Or whatever that meant because all Xavier really registered was the word ‘Sid,’ a bad indication that he could’ve been robbed in broad daylight.
Thankfully, it was only Luca, and really, it was probably only the little chipmunk who could elicit the same reaction anyway.
But while Xavier was deemed safe, one mecha had started to fear for its life and its looks!
