Chapter 229: Tasks
The Dungeon-linked space was bustling.
And it was so unusual that Luca had to keep on whipping his head as he kept hearing voices from everywhere.
Yes, everywhere.
Because there were exclamations of awe, surprise, and adoration everywhere they went for this Ollie-guided tour.
The Fruit trees and those ripe fruits garnered the first loud cries.
It was because those who were successful in the earlier skirmish could distinctly remember the taste of these glorious fruits and just learned that there were this many!
And that, for one, they grew in trees!
“You mean these just…appear?” someone whispered, awe-struck.
“Well, not quite. They grow on trees but usually grow fast thanks to the spiritual energy!” Corrected the short but knowledgeable tour guide.
A real surprise if you ask them, and one gardener was all red in the face as he marveled at the definition of life for him.
However, the surprise didn’t stop there. The empty farms that initially confused everyone suddenly looked so much better once the jubilant tour guide had Jax explain the sources of the potatoes, corn, and Brussels sprouts.
The crowd gasped.
Ollie and Jax looked very smug about this.
The blondie even pounded on his chest as he remembered how he was considered a pioneer after germinating a seed into a sapling when they were taught how to plant.
And the tour group listened with rapt attention as they began describing the possibilities and the multitude of crops they could try planting.
They had no idea just what all those other things were but could guarantee that they were likely great things!
Then they passed by the coop, where Ollie talked about how lucky they were that this was empty.
“…”
Clearly, someone was traumatized.
But then came the stream, which Ollie warned about.
Everyone must be mindful of conserving water, especially water from the space. And at no point should people litter a very important water source.
It was a stern warning and one that people would take a little too seriously.
Although, that wasn’t the only thing that these people would take seriously.
Luca finally learned what a well-oiled organization looked like. When Kyle, Butler Gary, and Steward Han called for registration, the people automatically divided into groups with their usual subheads.
Wow.
And when they called for the initial distribution of tasks, everyone just followed suit.
They decided on a rotation before screening the people for jobs that they could excel at, such as farming, animal husbandry, gathering, and, last but not least, corruption runs.
This clearly stumped the soldiers under the Duke’s command, but they knew better than to ask at this point.
And thankfully, they didn’t, for this was information that they wouldn’t be able to take while standing.
The Duke called for everyone to gather at the clearing.
Follow new episodes on the "N0vel1st.c0m".
And unlike before, this time, they were warned.
“Sit,” the Duke commanded, his voice booming with authority.
“I do not wish to see anyone faint.”
“…”
It was Luca’s turn.
For one it started because the confused heir was surprised to learn that his friends had automatically decided to divide the tasks between themselves.
Ollie was in charge of showing people around while noting the differences between Luca’s original space and this Dungeon-Linked one.
Jax obviously announced himself as the planting instructor who was adamant about including a required plant appreciation course.
Then there was Kyle who had to coordinate with Butler Gary and Steward Han for logistics. And this included how they were going to transfer a few chickens as well as several fishes to see if they could jumpstart that industry here.
And Luca was surprised to learn that Xavier had been coordinating with the Duke regarding the corruption runs.
Which was only possible after learning that the Dungeon-Linked Door would always end up in the Duchy.
Yes.
Unlike when they went through their respective houses only to come out where they left off, coming out from this physical door would always land in the Duchy.
It meant countless possibilities, and for one, it meant that they could stop sneaking in through the Imperial jump points.
Which was likely the best call from someone who was a hairstrand away from being discovered.
They just had to make sure the Duke doesn’t know how they’ve been getting the CP prior to these official runs.
All of these were good and great but it left Luca with a feeling that he was contributing the least.
The little leader may have gotten used to working with his small group, but never in an organization this big.
In fact, this would be the first time an organization didn’t shun him!
But just when he was beginning to wonder about what to do, Xavier reminded him of their original purpose.
“Original purpose?”
Xavier nodded, only for Luca to remember about the purified beasts.
“Exactly.”
And that was why he was now standing before the Duchy’s people together with one confident tortoise with a scarf, a cowering manticore, and four shivering primates.
The audience could only blink at the sight, unsure of what exactly they were seeing, until a tentacle flung out from the Tortoise and onto one of the apples.
It sounded simple, but that speed shocked only those with combat training. The regular people, like the doctors, barely saw anything until the tortoise had an apple before him.
Such deadly precision.
“!!!”
Beasts.
Once corrupted beasts, in fact.
“These creatures,” he began, his voice steady, “were once corrupted.”
Gasps followed.
And Luca tried explaining that this space was originally a sanctuary for these now-purified creatures.
Well, maybe not Tortie, as it seemed like he’d start a riot if he was left here permanently.
It was impossible to let them go back to their contaminated planets.
But it was too much to have them consume that much spiritual energy. And with only three bony elders, other beasts might be too rowdy with the farm.
It was a lot to process.
And Luca knew this.
It was one thing to be shown all these things, but another to be told that there was a way to even slightly deal with the problem that has plagued the universe for more than a century.
Groundbreaking.
And really tear-jerking.
Especially for those whose families and friends were once ravaged by this plague.
These were silent tears, though. Because all they could do now was deal with the future.
But even though it was a shame that those people didn’t make it to witness this miracle, they were certainly part of the reason these few people could witness it now.
Luca watched all of this and, for a moment, felt guilty about not coming forward as soon as he realized that he could do something about it.
But instead of being met with accusatory stares and the expected barrage of questions about the logic of this, the people just smiled at him.
Which confused the heir greatly.
And only when the Duke explained it that he understood why the people kept silent.
“Son. This is the best way to protect you and all this. They won’t ask.” Explained the Duke as the people on the ground nodded.
“Young Lord, the less we know, the better.”
“There is no information they could take from us if we knew nothing from the very beginning.”
“Maybe, one day, we can know, but until we are strong enough, this is more than enough for all of us.”
The people smiled, they didn’t even want to acknowledge it. Even when they knew it in their hearts no one would confirm it.
Not right now.
For now, let the Duchy carry this pot so their Young Lord could be kept safe.
