Chapter 246: Services
It started as a very awkward stand-off one might expect when a house cat-turned-hovercraft decided it wasn’t going anywhere.
The Earl, who was earlier high with joy, was now reeling from the sight of his enormous feline who had rooted himself around another human.
Unfortunately, it was hard to project authority when the pet insisted on flicking its tail in a very “I’m the boss now” manner.
The abandoned Earl sputtered. “Mr. Mittens, come to Papa!”
Mr. Mittens did not.
“…”
Instead, the lynx decided to curl around even more as it radiated the aura of supreme satisfaction.
Lord Nolan’s smile twitched. “I—I see. He’s simply…overwhelmed.”
“Yes! That’s all, right?” He asked as his left eye followed his mouth.
“…”
The awkwardness deepened, only to be thankfully dispersed by an experienced duo.
“About this, Lord Nolan,” Ollie flashed the shellshocked Earl with an understanding smile reminiscent of a seasoned opportunist.
“It’s not that Mr. Mittens prefers us over you, the owner.”
The Earl perked up.
He probably does right now, but there was no need to mention that. And as a person with a hidden agenda, it was much better to ensure the stability of the client’s psyche.
“We just think,” Ollie continued with a soothing smile, “that he has gotten used to the services provided by the combined efforts of our Guild and the House of Kyros.”
“Services?” Lord Nolan asked suspiciously.
“Ah, yes!”
“You see, our Guild has recently encountered a few beasts that needed rehabilitation.”
Steward Han, who was watching all this as a chaperone, coughed pointedly as he glanced at Mr. Mittens.
He wouldn’t assume that the lounging beast had gone on a bender while causing a disaster if he hadn’t known any better.
And yet here was the cat, all shiny and fat—correction, well-fed.
Rehab my ass. Thought the Steward, who still remembered his near-death experience.
For however he looked at it, it seemed like a stretch.
Not unless you count that entire arc about Tortie, the supreme tortoise, doing god’s work.
But what does he know, right?
“By sheer luck, we’ve gotten it down to a few standard things.”
Yes.
The services weren’t much, really.
It just included cleaning them of contamination, giving them food they hadn’t tasted in their entire lives, and giving them an energy-filled place to stay.
Follow new episodes on the "N0vel1st.c0m".
Not to mention the extra service of having them disciplined and trained by the first inmate—Tortie, the guardian beast.
Their enforcer was rather strict and had taken to his role with terrifying dedication to leafy greens, flowers, and fruits.
So, any signs of rebellion? Tentacle Slapped.
Any refusal to bathe? Slapped harder.
And the little tortoise did not care for celebrity status or size.
Mr. Mittens had learned this the hard way, and he wasn’t even the first to do so.
But the Earl didn’t need to know about the specifics and wouldn’t have assumed something like that had happened, considering the pet’s insistence on staying.
So, how were they even planning on going about this situation?
Surprisingly, by opening an official facility that could receive such guests.
They couldn’t do something so drastic—such as opening up the Dungeon-Linked Space to the public, but there was one place they could use.
And they prepared for this by adding a few amenities to the Pocket Dimension.
The once expansive garden now was home to a few more things.
Towering climbing platforms, plush lounging areas, luxurious massage beds, and wading pools. All courtesy of the father who wanted to buy more furniture if only they could all fit.
Obviously, the smaller pocket dimension would not be able to house all the beasts, but they needed a staging area that could be opened to the public.
And for now, all they had was their office.
Also, their first paying client would be Mr. Mittens, a celebrity cat who would likely make waves once his return had been confirmed.
So, how were they supposed to deal with all this attention?
By earning from it, of course!
Surprisingly, one Adjutant pulled out a holographic brochure of their offerings, but really it was mostly an invitation to book a private job for their guild.
Yes. This was the fastest way they could earn points to upgrade their Guild Status while getting the proper permits to skip classes.
And their method of advertising? Mr. Mittens and Lord Nolan’s huge mouth.
Honestly, Luca had been nervous the entire time. When he first heard of the idea, he was not sure how anyone would spend Star coins on such an experience for their pets.
But he would surely be mistaken after seeing the dedication of pet owners and their desire to give their babies the best they could offer.
Right now, Lord Nolan was faced with such a decision.
On the one hand, Mr. Mittens looked like he was going to start a protest or change owners if the services were not availed, but at the same time, he was worried about his pet’s safety.
What if the same thing happened?
And the Guild, even though backed by the House of Kyros, was surely new and may not be able to guarantee the safety of his baby.
His hesitation was evident on his face, and Kyle felt he could solve it.
“But Lord Nolan, we’d like to inform you that you might have to make a bit of a trip for our facility.” Kyle looked wistful, for hard selling was not the way to go.
“As, unfortunately, our location is right next to the Military Headquarters back at Planet Nova.”
“?”
“!!!”
The reaction was as expected, but Kyle continued to hold his expression, and one other amazed salesman looked at him in awe.
He’s so shrewd!
How awesome! Ollie thought in his heart as he watched the hesitating Lord’s change in expression.
“Next to the Military Headquarters, you say?!”
“Yes, Lord Nolan. We opted to get a particular lot instead of the bigger ones for safety, and so we’re practically next door neighbors with the Marshal.”
A giant lie, considering their penny-pinching Guild leader, but it was also an absolute truth that they were next-door neighbors with the Marshal.
Now, this was suddenly a different thing altogether.
For if he really wanted to ensure his baby’s safety, then isn’t the Military HQ or the Imperial Palace the best place?
But if both are not possible, then isn’t this the closest thing to that?
Yes, and honestly, this was even better than that, if only the clueless Lord knew.
But that was fine, as he would soon find out.
“Well, I guess it wouldn’t be bad to try…” Said the Pet owner, who was actually left with no choice as Mr. Mittens had long made his decision known.
It was one tail flick at first, then twice. Then, with all the self-importance of an emperor, he strutted behind Kyle, who had the official job request form open.
“Haaaa…! Okay, then let us book a trial of the facility.”
“Excellent!” Ollie beamed!
“As for our membership plans, we could discuss those after you’ve tried our services.”
“Ah, Lord, there’s just one little thing.” Smiled Kyle, who was sure this was a warning he needed to give in advance.
“About our building. Please don’t be too surprised; we purposely aimed for the look.”
“The look?” Asked the visibly confused Earl.
“Yes, the look.”
The adjutant offered a broad and professional smile but didn’t expound on it.
For just what could he say to describe this look?
