Chapter 248: Membership
Xavier’s eye twitched at the development.
Had they all known that the entrance alone was enough to entice people to sign, then maybe they wouldn’t have had to slave away like that.
Then maybe he would have had more time with his little chipmunk whom he hadn’t gotten to talk to in private since that day!
The Prince had to refrain from seething and just thought of how getting it done in one go should free up their time, right?
Sure, dreams were free, anyway.
But even as he thought that, Xavier knew just how impressive this new daycare was and honestly thought that he’d be a lousy brother if his sister could not join with her pet.
With the help of actual experts under the Duchy’s banner, they were actually able to create a space that could accommodate the most common pets in the Empire.
However, the most challenging aspect was ensuring the safety of beasts that were considered prey, and for this, they even needed to buy a bloodlust sealing gate from the Trove.
The 50,000 CP cost hurt.
But it hurt the little money grubber less after he realized that it would save them from having to pay compensation for pets that could randomly be eaten.
Then came the actual amenities.
This time, they also opted to use materials from the Dungeon Space.
The structures were mostly made with wood or stones instead of just metal, which they could order in bulk.
Those day beds and even those scratching posts were all made with energy-laden materials and were enough to be considered an actual feature.
Then there was sanitation.
Yes, for what do you do to pets who would obviously end up answering the call of nature?
Waste disposal and composting, apparently.
And just the look on everyone’s faces after learning about the concept of organic fertilizers was something for the books.
Now, if they were going to go this far, they might as well go even farther.
Heck, even the waters were sectioned to accommodate beasts of different sizes, and Xavier could just remember the effort it took to catch live fish until someone decided that enough was enough.
The goal was to try and grow crops where there was space and to breed fish where there was water.
After all, just how were they planning on feeding all these beasts?
And honestly, while everyone seemed like they had tough jobs, it’s actually Luca who had to face the tough problem of deciding and allocating food.
For both the pets and their owners.
Luca and D-29 had to learn as much information as possible, as feeding every beast the same thing would be irresponsible.
So, despite lacking options, the Guild leader had to prepare different meal sets, and as many of them as they could afford.
The preparations were crazy, and Jax, for one, could not believe just how much food they would have to keep churning out in case they needed to support this many clients.
And that was just for the beasts.
In fact, the argument was, what about the humans?
Obviously, the end goal.
Follow new episodes on the "N0vel1st.c0m".
And as much as they would like to prioritize these humans, the problem was still scarcity and displacement.
While humans can now freely get up and leave to head to different planets, beasts aren’t as fortunate.
Nor were they as lucky to be in a position where not using spiritual energy was possible.
Just like Mr. Mittens, who had no other choice.
This was even why their membership requirements and benefits underwent three rounds of changes until they reached a relatively acceptable model.
And Kyle had a field day trying to get all of this approved by the Military HQ and the school.
Thankfully, Duke Leander’s face was enough to reassure all the concerned parties that they were not just playing around with the system.
After all, opening a beast rehabilitation center?
Who would even have the resources for that?!
Well, they do.
And right now, these resources were being enjoyed by one giant cat as his owner looks on with extreme envy.
The Phasetail lynx was certainly having the time of his life as a portioned meal of fresh fish was delivered to him.
And although it was not as big as the whole fish he had managed to eat before, the knowledge that this could be a common occurrence for the regal beast allowed for a more modest appetite.
Not to mention how easy it was to feel satiated when even his bed provided him with energy.
Even the scratching post was found to be of good standard as the giant cat purred at it in satisfaction.
Meanwhile, Lord Nolan could only watch in devastation as his beloved cat received the treatment of a god.
It was one luxury after the other.
And he could only look on as he decided that rubbing against the grass was likely much better than the over-priced spa treatments he was used to getting.
Was it possible to turn into a cat, too?
The Earl visibly drooped.
His once-proud posture slumped as the painful realization dawned on him. He would never, in any lifetime, experience something like this.
But before the depression could entirely consume him, he was suddenly called over and directed towards what looked like a lounge.
However, what nearly gave the Earl a heart attack was the small tray that was set before him.
On it lay a delicate fruit platter and a glass of something that had caused several companies to declare a holiday.
Lord Nolan stared.
And then gawked some more.
He knew what these were, for only those living under a rock would fail to recognize these.
And right now, these were just being casually served to him as if none of this was groundbreaking enough.
It finally dawned on him.
Did I sign my life away? Thought the suddenly suspicious noble who regretted not reading the fine print!
A wave of panic surged as the pet owner hastily opened the holographic contract.
10 million Star Coins.
Per Month.
“…”
Have these kids gone insane?!
But before he could unleash his outrage, his eyes stopped at something interesting.
And something even more ludicrous occurred as the initially frustrated noble suddenly wired over 50 billion Star Coins.
“…”
“Lord Nolan?”
“Tell me,” the Earl declared, his tone frighteningly calm.
“If anyone attempts to beat this sponsorship, please inform me immediately.”
“I will fight.”
“Unless it’s the Imperial Family.” That took a beat longer than usual, but he had to decide on his willingness to lose his post.
But then realized that there was no use in keeping his spot when he was dead.
Kyle blinked. “Noted.”
It was honestly expected.
He just didn’t think it would be this much on the first go.
That model was surely the better choice.
