Chapter 335: Awakeners

A cryo gun or a cryo bomb.

Duchess Amelia momentarily convinced herself about seeing either of these two.

Yes, that was the only logical explanation for what just happened.

And if not, she was going to have to hallucinate the equipment into existence unless she wanted to drive herself crazy.

After all, mechas normally don’t allow for the use of bloodline abilities as there are no conduction channels for that.

Then she’d just gift herself a telescope once they’re out of there.

Or get her eyes checked.

Or both.

And only then will she use her remaining IQ to process what she allegedly didn’t see.

But for now, they had to figure out how to navigate this changed labyrinth.

She’d been here just earlier. Almost won, while on the brink of death. Though honestly, they would’ve likely died if they had succeeded and attempted to escape.

Imagine exiting directly into space without gear that they’ve lost ages ago?

Certain death.

But that wasn’t exactly so detached from their current uncertainty. And while her body had been healed, she wasn’t the only one—worse, this place even evolved in such a short time.

The walls pulsed, and unlike earlier, where natural rocks lined the place, what she saw before them were densely packed roots that didn’t look half as petrified as she would’ve preferred.

And the others, like Luca, thought they suspiciously looked too much like veins.

“Avoid the walls and those roots as much as possible.”

Especially not those pustule-like sacks.

They picked their way through the narrow tunnels and flickering dead ends, but that didn’t last.

The first one came with a split and that sickening wet sound.

Moist, and the poor adjutant winced at the unnerving sequence.

Then another.

And another, as more and more of those sacks began to pulse and twitch.

“!!!”

“What the—?!” Asked Kyle, who looked around for the sudden sources of sounds.

The monsters came fast.

Small, spindly things with too many limbs and sharp, fibrous claws that glistened wetly in the low light.

They weren’t strong individually. But these creatures that look like beasts merged with tree bark came in swarms.

And worse?

They latched onto the mechas the moment they made contact.

Getting rid of those that hadn’t latched shouldn’t have been difficult, but with the tight space, it was more than just a challenge.

“They’re everywhere!” Cece yelped as Gisella sliced down one creature only to have two more latch onto her mech’s arm.

“Careful with the attacks!” Duchess Amelia barked.

“We can’t afford a full clash here! And keep your distance from each other!”

The corridors were too cramped.

Every swing of a weapon risked hitting the walls—or worse, bursting another incubation sack.

Kyle gritted his teeth, trying to use minimal thruster bursts to dislodge the monsters while avoiding the pulsing walls.

But it was getting worse.

The creatures moved in droves, slippery and fast, overwhelming even their coordinated formation.

Inside D-29, Luca clenched the controls tightly, his cockpit flickering with warning signals as these small leech-like creatures crawled across the exterior, searching for weaknesses.

Honestly, the little guide got it the easiest as the nanite ores on D-29’s plating would activate whenever one of those monsters so much scratched the mecha, and like his hand, got mutilated in the process.

But that would just work for D-29 and Sid.

As for the others? They needed options, and fast.

“Host!” called D-29, “What about just setting them on fire?” asked the system, who had the mecha details of nearly all registered mechas and knew of their maximum fire resistance.

So, unless those barks were fire retardant, then shouldn’t that work?

“?”

Burn?

Oh.

OH.

Yes, burn. Of course.

Luca felt a bit uneasy, his heart hammering at this plan.

He didn’t really want to risk it, especially since he hadn’t had the time to practice it properly since that day.

The little awakener still remembered what happened the last time his abilities went berserk and almost burned Xavier and the area around them.

But however he looked at it, that was really the most efficient way to deal with these creatures.

Luca exhaled shakily.

Then, he reached inward, assuming that it was similar to how his usual abilities could be used.

And he let it rise.

But mostly, it was like bursting out from him in all directions, much like his tendrils would fan out from him.

“Everyone—keep clear of me while I test something!” Luca shouted over the comms.

There was a beat of stunned confusion until D-29’s plates flushed with heat, shimmering with a visible wave of rising temperature.

Then combustion.

A controlled burst of searing spiritual flame erupted outward from D-29’s frame in a brilliant, blinding wave.

The leeching monsters clinging to his mech howled and shriveled, falling away like burning leaves caught in a flashfire.

While the wave spread outward, licking along the surprised mecha’s profile.

The probability of it working wasn’t actually high, but the little system was happy that it turned out fine, just like always.

Roots near him blackened and curled—but Luca directed the flow carefully, steering the flames towards Kyle’s mecha as Ollie exclaimed about how great his good brother was.

“Nice work, brother!” Ollie chirped gleefully over the comms as he practically strangled Kyle in his excitement.

“Thank you, brother,” replied the flustered heir, who didn’t think that would work well.

Meanwhile, Cece thought about how convenient this ability was for dwarves, but was surprised because Gisella was suddenly all too quiet.

But how could she react? What reaction would be acceptable?!

When the assistant, who also had a functioning brain, had already ignored the earlier use of elemental abilities.

That was a life-saving grace after all, so even if she had to cleanse her eyes, it would be acceptable.

But their Young Lord just channeled what was likely a bloodline ability through his mecha.

Unless someone decided that a fiery cannonball mecha was now a thing, and made weapons specifically for it, then that was likely the Kyros blood showing.

And doing so through a mecha, of all things. Wow.

However, Gisella didn’t have plans to rush to her deathbed, and so the assistant opted to stay quiet, for if she had noticed it, then someone else probably had too.

And she was right.

Thankfully, it wasn’t the labyrinth or those creatures who had the same thoughts. Nor did they learn anything about fire safety procedures, and were instead attracted to the fire like moths to a flame.

However, Xavier reminded Luca to conserve his energy for the bigger fight. And to only use enough for them to be able to pass through.

Because who knows if they’d need those abilities more than tech?
