Chapter 337: Equipment Check
How about a no?
Ollie could seriously see how so many things could go wrong.
Just the setup of this place alone was screaming ‘high-budget horror film,’ which would have been great if they weren’t the forced actors.
His grip tightened so intensely that Kyle thought it was great he was wearing the military-issued exploration suit, or it would’ve been torn by now.
“Ollie, stop gripping so hard like that,” said the adjutant, who would’ve ideally opened his hands himself if not for needing to make sure that he was ready to pilot at any time.
“I’ll just pay for it…” muttered the blonde who wasn’t even blinking.
“I don’t care about the clothes. But if you keep on doing that, you’ll break your own fingers,” reasoned Kyle.
It was only then that Ollie looked back at him in surprise.
“You have an important role. So you have to be ready, and you need your fingers for it.”
“Huh…?”
The mop felt like this giant was speaking in a language he couldn’t understand.
How was it possible for him to have an important role?
“You have the pills with you, right? And also the spiritual food?”
Ollie blinked, momentarily dazed until he realized he did, and only then did he give an earnest nod.
“Right.” Kyle didn’t look down at the blonde who was surely staring at him, but continued. “This fight looks like it won’t be easy, and if there’s corruption, then we need to avoid reaching that critical point.”
The initially wilting stick suddenly straightened as if realizing what it meant.
But instead of stopping there, Ollie suddenly reached down, which got a raised brow from the adjutant.
“I understand! You need food, right?! A constant supply?!” he said as if in a rush.
Kyle nodded, and while it was in part to get Ollie to stop locking up like that, it was a true need that he seemed to have forgotten since they started being dependent on Luca’s dungeon.
But now that they couldn’t access it, they would have to go back to basics.
Or as basic as this could be, considering what this hoarder apparently stashed on there without him even noticing.
“???”
It was some sort of mini-fridge, and Kyle, for a moment, wanted to look because he couldn’t believe what he was seeing in his peripheral vision.
“Is that a fridge?!” asked the mecha pilot who should’ve known better.
“Sort of. This one has its own power system, so it should survive even when the mecha isn’t capable of working.”
Kyle was momentarily speechless until he asked, “But why?”
Then Ollie looked at him as if he were the ridiculous one.
“What would happen if you’re stranded somewhere and can’t get help right away?” the blonde’s brows furrowed as he imagined the scenarios he thought of when he first installed this.
“And sure, you have space buttons with a few rations, but what if it’s destroyed from taking a bullet or something like that?!”
Follow new episodes on the "N0vel1st.c0m".
Okay, clearly that might not be the most common application, but sometimes, space buttons get lost, stolen, or left behind.
So what then?
“If you had this, then you would likely be able to survive until help gets there. But if you didn’t…” he trailed off, but looked every bit scared of whatever he was imagining.
“And look! Right now, it should be helpful!”
Then Kyle saw him reaching for the comms.
“Everyone, on the lower right side of your cockpit chair, just under the console, there’s supposed to be a compartment there,” said Ollie, whose face looked a bit more hopeful now.
“You should be able to open it by kicking it softly. I think we managed to install it on the mechas we’re using now…” He tried to recall if he missed any of the combination piloted mechas on here, but was pretty sure they only hadn’t gotten to the Duke’s mecha because he’s been too busy to leave it with them.
But for everyone else, it should be good.
“Oh brother! Good thinking! I almost forgot about this, too!” exclaimed Luca, who forgot he installed the same things on both Sid and D-29.
This obviously got everyone curious, and they did as they were told, making sure to kick lightly so they wouldn’t blow something up with their pure physical strength.
Now, Cece was the quickest, being the only other passenger. And was the first one to mutter to herself the moment the compartment sprang open after a gentle kick.
“…What the?”
Nestled neatly inside the small compartment was a collection of survival supplies.
There were small bottles of clear liquid that the others would know as spiritual water. Then, tightly sealed snacks, some fruit jam jars, and two general space buttons that had generic clothes, basic toiletries, and a few first aid supplies.
The items weren’t flashy and were definitely not the standard military emergency kit.
But the Duchess could tell that these were even better.
Especially against corruption.
Across the comms, startled exclamations started to filter in.
“There’s really a stash here,” muttered Butler Gary, who was in disbelief, especially since he just let those two lords tinker with his mecha just a few days ago.
Even Duchess Amelia let out a soft, astonished hum as she checked her borrowed mecha’s compartment.
Meanwhile, Ollie still apologized for this big gaffe. “Sorry, everyone, I forgot about this when we were trying to account for the supplies.”
“There is no need to apologize, Lord Ollie. We’re thankful for this instead,” reassured the Butler, who was really thankful for the thoughtfulness.
Inside her cockpit, Duchess Amelia was almost tempted to close her eyes to reflect on this moment, but knew better than that.
She thought back to what Butler Gary had once told her—about how these kids weren’t ordinary.
Practical experience beyond their years.
And a way of thinking so different from the old ways.
Amelia smiled faintly to herself.
There was so much they could learn from this generation.
And maybe she could ask them to outfit her mecha with these upgrades once she manages to get one for herself again.
Yeah, after they deal with this one.
That creature, which she now had to talk about in case it could still apply to this run.
She was doubtful. But if anything, she needed to talk about that guarded room that she’s never been able to breach, only to stop because someone mentioned her son.
“!!!”
“What’s wrong, Luca?” suddenly asked Xavier, who did so because he saw the sudden change in Luca’s expression.
“I think we might have something we can use against the boss…” he blinked, before his face turned a bit hopeful.
“What is it, brother?”
“The Purification Canon. It was installed as part of D-29’s arsenal and wasn’t left inside the storage.”
“It’s been a while since we last used it, so I somehow forgot,” he said sheepishly. “Sorry!”
“That’s a good thing, right, Young Lord?” asked Gisella, who was wondering why the lads looked so serious when it sounded like good news to her.
“Well, it is. But I don’t know if we could use it here properly because this requires charging up…and energy crystals.” He said hesitantly.
“But you’ve successfully used it before?” asked the curious mom.
“Yes, Mom. Tortie took a cannon to the mouth.”
“The what—?” Cece exclaimed, unsure if she heard it right.
Apparently, she did and couldn’t help but want to meet this Tortie.
Sure.
But only after Goatie.
