Chapter 348: Tour
Three bumps and an incoming black eye later, Kyle had finally finished sparring with his brother—more accurately, dodging fists and fending off accusations—before being assigned a new task: briefing everyone on the settlement’s security measures.
Yes. Even they needed to be briefed.
But contrary to expectations, these people actually asked for it.
Duchess Amelia was actually the first one to ask, which surprised Luca, who thought they were about to go for a tour around the place.
“Mom? You want to do the oath too?” verified the heir, who was flustered by his mother’s insistence.
“Of course.” Amelia’s chin lifted proudly. “We must do it properly. Don’t cut corners. This is for your and everyone’s safety.”
He hadn’t expected that.
Luca was surprised to see everyone nodding in agreement, since he didn’t think they’d ask for such restrictions on themselves.
“Then would you also like to have your own cabins in the settlement?” He asked, eyes shifting as he could feel everyone’s eyes on him.
Xavier was sure that it would be a resounding yes. Even when he raised a brow at the Chief of Staff, all he got was a solemn nod.
Naturally, they all but lined up for the oath. And had Amelia not been the Duchess, they might’ve fought over who went first.
Not like any of them would win if she took it seriously.
Especially not when the Duchess was excited to take the same oath that her husband had been bragging about.
It was that pinky swear. And it seems like Leander wasn’t kidding when he said that it felt magical!
Of course it would, because D-29 would only activate the settlement cabins once the pinky swear was made.
Although even without this “magic,” the duchess would likely feel the same awe, as wholeheartedly promising to protect each other had only been a dream of hers.
But now look at her? She was making a vow to her son, one that she intended to honor with her life.
Gisella, Cece, and Head Maid Gloria all made the same oaths as they tried to keep themselves from swimming in tears.
And even if one day they discover the truth about the pinky swear, no one would bat an eye for in that moment; it felt sacred.
It was an occasion to remember, and to give such perks as recognition for their loyalty was something that was truly a mark of House Kyros.
Meanwhile, Kyle had to pull on Killian to ask whether he was sure about this, as his priorities would shift because this would take precedence.
But the Chief of Staff only looked at him like he had grown an additional head before ruffling his hair.
“You’re willing to die for this cause, right?”
Kyle frowned but nodded slowly.
“Then, you might as well sign up the entire family. It’s just a matter of time anyway.”
It might have sounded like a joke, which Ollie found funny, but Killian was pretty sure it wasn’t.
Honestly, if they had an option, they might as well just move the Imperial Palace in. It looks like they plan on living here anyway.
So Killian Nox ended up with his own plot of land that was thankfully away from his younger brother’s house.
They were close, but if they had to see each other daily, he would be forced to nag him for paperwork that they couldn’t even submit.
Like paperwork about the entire place.

Heck, even that rock over there or that fallen leaf could get a write-up with how much spiritual energy it had, so what more for the actual highlights and amenities?
Heart palpitations.
Yes. Duchess Amelia wasn’t sure if she was having some sort of arrhythmia because everywhere they went, they were bombarded with things that they probably couldn’t even imagine.
Those expansive farms, orchards with actual fruit, and even beasts that were said to be miraculous, well, according to her husband.
But after she learned that a lot of the provisions they ate a while back were made here, the duchess felt like she understood why one cow had a golden bust with matching paintings.
Then they went to the source of the egg for their fried rice, and Cece stared hard.
“So that’s a chicken coop?” Amelia asked, staring at the suspiciously well-fortified structure surrounded by additional fencing.
“Yes, Mom,” Luca nodded innocently and was surprised at the next question about the fortification.
“Are there a lot of thieves here? Because this place looks a bit different?”
“Ah, Your Grace! You see, we are protecting ourselves from them!” Said Ollie with a serious look that spoke volumes of his trauma.
“Oh? They’re that vicious?!”
“If you ask me, one would probably start learning how to breathe fire soon,” reiterated the blonde with conviction.
But who knows, right?
Maybe Tortie.
Tortie would know. And just as they passed by Jax’s cabin, they were introduced to Tortie the tortoise, who was apparently a guardian beast.
Obviously, the Chief of Staff almost bucked at how a planet’s guardian beast was seen lounging while in this form.
This was most likely an illegal abduction. And he was definitely implicated now, so the poor official just shut his mouth.
Thankfully, the elders introduced to them weren’t as bad. Despite looking like health hazards, at least they looked like they were here on their own volition.
Hopefully.
Or were these kids also grave robbers?
It was a thought he didn’t want to dwell on; thankfully, he got distracted by the training and mecha manufacturing facilities that were apparently the play zone of Luca and Ollie.
It was pristine. Gleaming. Filled with half-built machines, weapon racks, and massive alloy frames being worked on by automated arms. And it didn’t seem too outrageous until he heard about these two “mechanics”.
Now, the blonde was a mechanic; he knew that. But was he hearing this correctly? Luca was not only a pilot but could actually pass as a mechanic too?!
One who has already built an entire mecha at this age?!
And it wasn’t even a mecha from any of the existing kinds.
A biomecha?!
He had no idea what it was, but if what he was seeing was correct, then it must be something like Sid because right about now, the Empire’s guardian mecha was perched right there for servicing.
Shit.
Killian slowly turned to his brother, whose eyes just darted around.
This would’ve been the biggest case of cognitive dissonance.
There’s reporting for the benefit of the Empire, while there’s dying with this secret to keep the very same institution safe from literally everyone.
No wonder they got no reports.
What exactly would anyone say that wouldn’t sound preposterous?
Especially for something like this Purification Chamber.
Everyone gasped at the sight of this thing that could apparently cleanse corruption.
And they kept silent as Steward Han demonstrated it with several soldiers who were knocked out as part of the procedure.
Duchess Amelia especially looked at the huge chamber and then at her son, who was the personification of a miracle.
In fact, Gisella had tears in her eyes because this was something that hit too close to home.
And to know that they were the lucky generation to have this kind of hope?
The assistant felt like she really needed to train more, or she’d hear it from their ancestors.
Meanwhile, Killian just wanted to hand in a damn resignation letter.
Seriously.
What was he going to tell their parents? Maybe he could be filed as a missing person, too.
