Chapter 37: Morning Assembly
“Xavier.”
That was the name of his new roommate, who left shortly after everyone else did.
Luca was actually thankful that he did because it was somewhat awkward being around him.
He grew up alone and had the social skills of a rock. It’s not that he was sure about their level of sociability, but that’s the idea.
But it wasn’t just Luca who felt that way. Xavier left to find Kyle for a good dressing down.
He wanted to find out how such a surprise slipped them after thoroughly checking the student list.
That afternoon, one adjutant had to run around the track with tears in his eyes. After being dragged by the collar, he was subjected to additional training hours.
However, it really wasn’t his fault because Luca didn’t finish his registration before the military prepared that list for review.
How was he supposed to know that his boss would suddenly have a new roommate?
__
On the other hand, the new tenant was also faced with a new dilemma.
With a new roommate, Luca had to figure out how to move in and out of his space discreetly.
His temporary solution was to observe his roommate’s typical routine and then, when necessary, hide inside the bathroom.
This would severely limit his time inside his space, but he had to adjust, or something worse might happen.
“D-29, earlier you said the bar to access level 1 moved when I was near the guy?”
I looked at the progress bar, and it seemed like he was right. It was a measly 2%, but that was 2% that they didn’t have until earlier.
“Was something wrong with him?”
Technically, we had a guess about what the Corruption Points were about. If it followed the interstellar naming convention, then the points had something to do with the Corrupted beasts and plants.
But how exactly were we supposed to get points? That was the issue, well, until today.
According to D-29, there should be a recording of that moment.
After repeating the recording several times over, Luca’s mood worsened.
“It seems like it was really physical contact, Host?”
Luca didn’t want to hear about it because he sure as hell didn’t want to touch the guy again. What kind of excuse would he have to make just so he could get close enough to do that?
“D-29, would it be possible to scan Xavier for anomalies? Maybe we can figure out what was so unique about him that we could get CP from him.”
“I can do that, Host. However, my range is currently limited for detailed scans. I suggest that you get as close as possible for the scan to succeed.”
Luca could only close his eyes to lament his bad luck.
__
Had Luca known earlier about the “random” nature of the room inspections, he would’ve saved himself the effort.
Especially in the future when he would be pissed to learn that no one really had the gall to check on Xavier’s room, so it was never really “randomly” selected.

For now, Luca was listening to the gossip being passed around as they waited for the first-morning assembly.
“I actually thought they skipped the welcoming ceremony this year!”
“No, that’s not it. They just couldn’t host it when half the faculty hadn’t come back from the missions!”
“Oh yeah! About that, I heard they were delayed in coming back, so the students who went with them missed the assessment exam?”
“Shhh! Lower your voice. Are you planning to die an early death?!” The student almost stifled the other guy’s mouth as he looked around for possible eavesdroppers.
“Sorry, sorry!”
“I heard they were fine about starting from the last ranks.”
“Highly likely, that group never bothered about rankings anyway. They barely even go to class!”
By the sound of it, there were delinquents in school who could get away with not attending classes.
Was there a way to get an exemption? Luca wondered and began sending a message to Ollie asking about such a good thing.
But before he could wait for his reply, the principal began with a rousing speech that was supposedly motivating and moving.
Well, it did seem that the other students were moved by it, so why was he the only one who didn’t rejoice after the announcement of this year’s Interschool Cup?
The problem wasn’t the announcement or the Principal. For a while now, Luca felt like he was being watched—scrutinized, even.
His back unconsciously straightened because of the threat, but he had learned from years of facing bullies that giving them any attention would only increase their interest.
Unfortunately, Luca forgot that most of these people ‘knew’ him as someone else. There was no need for him to even do much to garner ire from the people around him.
Like Noah Emory, whose annoyance stemmed from missing the Top 10 assessment ranking because a cheater managed to place 4th.
In Noah’s opinion, the school was finally infected by nepotism and was heavily favoring that particular noble.
His annoyance increased even more when he learned that the Duke was donating several buildings to the Academy.
To him, this was proof of their backdoor dealings, which allowed a scrawny wimp like Luca to rank so high.
Noah was too angry to remember the number of proctors who reviewed the assessment. He also didn’t consider that he only placed 11th because the original rankers couldn’t take the test.
And Luca just so happens to be the most obvious target.
His methods were odd and unfathomable to those with untrained eyes, so people like Noah couldn’t see beyond his skittish movements.
Noah vowed to watch him closely. With the school’s policy against elitism, he was bound to fall. It may not be because of the school policy, but at least the other students would be forewarned against him.
But in reality, Noah wasn’t the only one with his sights on Luca.
It took longer than those traveling from closer planets or on the Empire’s battleship, but one woman and her party of servants finally managed to get to the Nova Base Station.
“He should be here, right?” Asked a young woman in a puffy dress.
Her get-up wasn’t exactly common on a planet that housed the Empire’s main military base, and that was because she traveled all the way from her home planet in search of her runaway beloved.
“There’s no use running away. I will always be able to find you, my dear…”
Luca suddenly felt chilly, and a shiver ran down his spine out of nowhere.
Oh, please, not again!
