Chapter 44: Upgrade
Xavier already imagined what the remaining week would look like for him. But contrary to his plans, he would barely see Luca’s shadow in the following days.
If not for their classes together, he would’ve assumed that the chipmunk had fled the school altogether.
Well, his guess wasn’t that far off.
The pseudo-octopus became so busy he momentarily forgot the embarrassing events that had recently transpired.
When he woke up in the infirmary, he heard from the Doctor that he was brought in there after fainting.
Frankly, Irina was waiting for the ball to drop. She was a citizen of the Empire and had obviously heard about Lord Luca Kyros.
While he looked angelic as he slept, Irina still made mental preparations to accept whatever he would throw at her.
Just because he looked like this while sleeping wouldn’t mean he was going to be tolerant of being beaten up (She still held on to this belief).
She actually offered to stay behind while the students returned to finish the remaining classes and explained Luca’s situation to the instructor.
This boy would undoubtedly miss the afternoon classes and might gain unnecessary attention.
So, Irina felt like the sacrificial lamb who offered herself for the good of the Empire.
But the dreaded lecture on mistreatment and threats to wage wars weren’t thrown at her.
In fact, nothing of that sort happened.
Instead, she got a sheepish apology for taking too much of her time as well as for missing his afternoon classes.
For.
Missing.
Class.
Irina’s three worldviews couldn’t hold up to Luca’s apologies and thanks.
And all the while, he thought that the people under their leader were humble enough.
Those stinky bastards dare hold their heads high when a boy as clean and adorable as this could apologize and thank her for doing her job?!
Somewhere out there, some allegedly stinky bastards felt an itch in their ears while a few let out random sneezes.
Back at the infirmary, Luca looked at the woman who was suddenly fired up and decided to apologize more because she seemed really mad.
This turned into them trying to comfort each other to stop the apology train.
Eventually, this had to stop because D-29 reminded him to check on the upgrades he missed while he was out cold.
Luca rushed out toward his room before remembering the issue of having a roommate.
After talking to the teacher, he actually had a plan and wanted to ask the system to look something up for him.
“D-29, could you check Star Mall for me? I need you to find a cost-effective Virtual pod.”
“Only pods, host? I won’t include the helmets and bracelets in the comparison?”
“Yeah, I was hoping to hide inside the pod before entering into my space. That way, even if Xavier comes into the room, I won’t get caught suddenly appearing or disappearing.”

D-29 liked the idea and ordered the most cost-effective virtual pod he could find to satisfy the boss. And Luca let him do that as he rushed back into the room.
Given orders to rest for the remainder of the day, Luca made use of it by hiding out in the bathroom while Xavier was in class. This was his temporary solution while the pod hadn’t arrived.
It was Luca’s first time inside the dungeon since the upgrade, and he was surprised to see the changes.
Calling it a space expansion would be an understatement. He could now see mountains from a good distance, as well as cleared fields that seemed to stretch far back.
Luca gawked at the scene before him but was prodded by the excited D-29, who wanted him to focus somewhere closer.
Beneath the same sky he’d had for years was this new dome-like structure that looked like a masterpiece of contradictions. It wasn’t that big, but it mainly looked like a gazebo. The smooth spiraling curves that wrapped around several sharp and angular points made it look foreign to him.
And that’s saying a lot since he’s practically living his second life already.
D-29 wanted Luca to hurry over to what looked like a shrine in the middle of the dome that hummed with immense energy.
It honestly felt alive, and Luca wasn’t sure if it was a good idea to approach it. But he felt like the system wouldn’t shut up if he didn’t, so he just prayed for the best outcome.
The moment Luca stepped into what looked like a giant dome divided into several parts, some of which were blocked by an energy barrier, he was greeted by a flurry of system prompts.
[BINDING DUNGEON ACCESS COMPLETE]
[TROVE ACCESS GRANTED]
[RECYCLER ACCESS GRANTED]
“Wow.”
This was really something else. And now Luca seemed to understand why he never thought that something like this could exist. Because by the looks of it, this was underground.
“Trove and Recycler? What are these supposed to be?” Luca asked D-29, only to be greeted by a giant arrow pointing to an opened wing.
“Host, with my manual opening to include more information, I can answer those questions!” D-29 sounded proud, or as proud as a dramatic system could be.
“First, I learned where we should actually be getting CP.”
“Should?”
“Yes, host. It seems like the corrupted beasts and plants should award us points for everyone that we defeat.”
“But, we haven’t defeated one? We haven’t even gone out of the school?!”
“Exactly, Host. So far, I have no explanation for how we got CP from your roommate, aside from confirming that the corruption energy in his body decreased after prolonged physical contact.”
“Don’t remind me.” Luca rubbed the bridge of his nose while exasperatedly trying to forget that memory.
So, he decided to focus on more important tasks, such as the new upgrades.
“Then what are we supposed to be recycling?”
The large apparatus loomed before Luca, dwarfing him in size. It had a large hatch that would probably be the chute to throw in recyclables.
“Corrupted beast and plant parts, Host.”
“?”
“What?” Luca thought he heard wrong. Maybe he was getting old and deaf, but D-29 repeated the same words, and he couldn’t deny it anymore.
How exactly was he expected to randomly kill such creatures? Then this thing meant he needed to bring the bodies back?!
Luca felt like he’d only be dragging his sorry body back into the recycler at this point.
“Ehem. I understand the problem, Host. And it seems like the Dungeon does, too. And that is what the Trove is for.”
“Please hang in there while the Trove loads.”
And D-29 did not explain how it would ‘load,’ which shocked Luca into falling on his butt after the dome projected a giant hologram of cubby holes with items.
Most were locked, but those that were open had numerical values underneath them.
Luca looked at the projection that spanned the whole wall and what looked like directional buttons to proceed to the next selection.
The number of things to see rattled his mind. Luca had never thought about shopping like this before.
The Trove was a store.
And it was a store unlike anything he’d seen before.
Oh, a frozen heart? Lemme buy it in the store for you.
Luca sat there for a while, realizing what kind of gold mine he just opened.
Maybe he could stick a few more times to that roommate of his?
