The Scrap Tamer - Chapter 146
Chapter 146: Absorbed [2]: A Core
Pain!
An amount so overwhelming that it could cause someone to rip out their own hair just to be relieved of it.
That was the type of pain Reid currently felt as the mother voidspawn tired taking over his body.
Like with Darren, the voidspawn forced itself through his mouth, nose and ears.
His vision blurred and his limbs felt like they were twisting in directions they weren’t supposed to.
He could feel the pain right down to his soul and his body was slowly being tempted to accept the eternal slumber, but he stubbornly held on.
The process lasted for a couple of agonizing minutes that felt like hours to Reid.
Because of its size, the mother voidspawn had to separate itself from some of its flesh and transfer its consciousness to the half taking over Reid’s body.
Soon enough, black veins started surfacing on Reid’s skin and his normally blue irises were fading to a sickly yellow.
“Yes… yes… just a little more.” The voidspawn’s voice rang in his mind, its tone dripping with cruel satisfaction.
Reid clenched his fist, or at least he tried to but his body didn’t respond to his command.
He realized that he had merely become a back seat observer in his own body and even then, he felt himself quickly fading.
“Fascinating,” the mother voidspawn spoke but this time, it was through Reid’s mouth.
“Your body truly is amazing,” it continued, flexing Reid’s finger, that was now in its complete control.
“Now, let’s see if you really do have one of the —” before it could complete whatever it wanted to, Reid’s body crashed Into the cave floor.
“W-what’s happening?” The mother voidspawn panicked as it soon lost control of its newly gained host.
It suddenly felt a pull within Reid’s body, a force pulled its entire form towards the chest area and started compressing it.
The mother voidspawn shrieked in pure, unfiltered terror as the force continued dragging it.
“No… NO! This isn’t possible!”
Its massive form twisted and spasmed, trying to resist, but it was useless. It was as if an invisible vortex had locked onto it, pulling every fiber of its existence into Reid’s chest.
Reid himself barely understood what was happening. His body burned, his muscles locked in place, yet he felt something was forcefully compressing the voidspawn’s presence inside him.
He clutched his chest, gasping.
The black veins that had spread across his body weren’t receding. Instead, they converged toward a single point beneath his sternum.
The Voidspawn continued screaming in agony, desperate to detach itself from Reid, but the force didn’t let it.
“STOP! STOP THIS AT ONCE! YOU CANNOT—”
It’s voice was suddenly cut off as an explosion of energy occured within Reid. Blood started dripping from his nose as he regained control of his body before he suddenly blacked out.

“I didn’t expect to see you back so soon.”
Reid’s eyes opened in the grassy field again and across the table, the Watcher calmly sat.
For some reason, Reid could tell that it had a pleased smile even though it was basically faceless, save for his eyes.

“Tea?” The watcher offered.
This time Reid silently accepted the tea. Even though he had a lot of questions, he needed to calm down first, after all, he almost died just now.
“I see you have a lot of questions,” the watcher said as he placed his tea cup on the table “ask away.”
Reid took a deep breath, calming himself down and arranging his thoughts before he finally spoke,
“What the hell just happened?” Well, maybe he wasn’t that calm.
“You just devoured a voidspawn. Or, to be more precise, you turned it into a core,” the watcher simply explained.
Reid blanked for a second, unable to respond.
What kind of explanation was that?
“Let’s start from the beginning, shall we?” The watcher said with a chuckle, seeing Reid’s expression.
Reid nodded and straightened up, ready to listen to exactly what just happened, because he had no idea.
“You see, the gift I gave you was a little something called [Void Authority],” the watcher started “I won’t go into the details right now since it’s a lot more fun to watch you discover on your own.”
“But one of its abilities allows you to make the void submit to you,” the watcher said “and the mother voidspawn? If it wasn’t obvious enough by the name, is a creature that has evolved to use void energy.”
“Once it tried to invade and take over your body, the authority saw it as the perfect opportunity to create your core and it did.” The watcher finished and picked his tea back up, waiting for Reid to process.
“A core?” Reid asked.
He wasn’t a stranger to cores forming inside him, but they usually required him to merge with one of his forged beasts, so this was a new revelation to him.
“Yes, a core” the watcher confirmed “the effects won’t be obvious right now since it needs time to assimilate, but once it does, you’ll not be limited to the pitiful energy you humans call soul energy.”
“Void energy will now also be available to you.”
Reid nodded in understanding…not really but at least he had answers now.
“What about the voice?” He remembered.
“Ah, that” the watcher fidgeted a bit, looking nervous “I might have accidentally given your other half sentience.”
“But don’t worry,” the Watcher recovered “the time for you two to assimilate was close anyway, so I just moved it a bit closer.”
None of what the watcher just said make sense to Reid, firstly, he knee about his red eyes self but never as another him.
He always thought of it as a different personality, one that made him unhinged and unaffected by emotions.
And what was that about assimilation. But before he could ask any of his questions, the watcher suddenly raised his wrist to eye level.
“Would you look at the time,” there was no watch on his wrist “all your answers will be revealed in time.”
With that, Reid blacked out again, ejected from the watcher’s domain.
“Things are about to get interesting” the watcher muttered and continued sipping his tea, keeping watch on Reid.
