Chapter 86: To Survive (1)
“Your Imperial Majesty,” a woman bowed low, her tone even, her eyes distant.
The room reeked of perfume. Heady, overwhelming, cloying. The atmosphere was stifling, every curtain drawn tight, every whisper muffled by the decadent walls.
After all, this was a whorehouse, a sanctuary of sin and secrets.
Novan Valtirium frequented it like a man lost in an oasis of fleeting pleasures.
He liked his women, but one in particular held his obsession: Meloris.
Why her? She did not fawn over him. She did not simper, did not gaze at him with the adoration he had grown accustomed to. Her gaze was stern, unflinching. She wanted nothing from him, not his riches, not his favor, not even his touch.
That made her dangerous. Irresistible.
He was the most powerful man in the Empire, sovereign in all but title. Handsome, sharp-jawed, commanding. Yet a secret clawed at him like rot beneath gilded armor – he bore no magic.
Unlike the Emperors of old, who ruled with fire and lightning in their veins, Novan was powerless. It was a truth buried so deep it burned his soul, and he would set the world ablaze before allowing it to come to light.
“You,” Novan said, approaching her, his shadow swallowing the room. “What do you think of me?”
The question was a weapon, a trap. Most would have stumbled, trembled, begged forgiveness. But not Meloris.
“I have no right to say what His Majesty is like,” she replied, bowing again. Her voice was steady, her face expressionless.
For a moment, he almost laughed. The answer was flawless, carefully crafted, diplomatic. But it was not what he wanted.
“Hngh!”
His hand shot out, clamping around her throat. He slammed her against the bed, his grip tightening as his eyes roamed her bruised face.
Marks already adorned her cheek and jaw, remnants of his prior visits. He tilted her head with rough fingers, as though inspecting a possession. And to him, she was.
People were ants, scurrying and disposable beneath his boots.
Every time he visited the whorehouse, he took her. Forced himself upon her. Even his concubines paled in comparison to her beauty, beauty that mocked him with its refusal.
Meloris was unlike anyone he had ever met. Equal, in a way that infuriated him. And yet, she loathed him.
Time passed, and Meloris bore his child.
She was brought into the harem, a gilded cage where disdain whispered through the silk-draped halls.
On the day she gave birth, she lay drenched in sweat, her hair limp, her body trembling from exertion. Nausea shook her stomach, and she leaned over to vomit into a basin, her weak body betraying no sign of triumph or despair.
The door slammed open, and a knight strode in, his face etched with concern. Lord Takresh, soon-to-be commander of the army and a man of unyielding ambition, moved to her side.
“My lady,” he said stiffly. “Are you well?”
Others in the harem ignored her unless summoned by the Emperor. But not Takresh. Assigned to guard her, he played the part dutifully, though his contempt for her origins was thinly veiled.
“Fear not,” she rasped, her voice hoarse yet steady. “This is normal.”
Takresh’s eyes flicked over her frail body.
To him, she was little more than a commoner, plucked from the Downward District, the Empire’s gutter, where despair and filth reigned. She disgusted him, and his every glance betrayed it.
Meloris noticed. She noticed everything. She had survived the streets, outwitted the thieves and liars of her youth. Survival was her birthright, and in this palace of schemes and predators, she would do what she must.
Takresh saw a stain. The Emperor saw a possession. But Meloris? Meloris saw opportunity.

Her hand brushed the sheets, deliberate, her voice softening. “You’ve been kind, Lord Takresh. Kinder than most.” Her eyes lifted, and for the first time, they shone with something other than defiance.
He stiffened. The charm was subtle, practiced. Dangerous.
Her pregnancy would not stop her. If the Emperor’s grip was unyielding, she would loosen it, one thread at a time. Starting with the knight before her.
Meloris adjusted herself on the bed, wincing slightly but keeping her movements graceful. Her hand, pale against the crimson sheets, brushed her damp hair from her face, revealing the sharp curve of her jaw.
Though her body was weakened, her presence was unyielding, her eyes flickering with something raw and dangerous.
“Lord Takresh,” she murmured, her voice soft, intimate – a tone she hadn’t used before. “You’ve come to my side so often… perhaps more than duty requires.”
He stiffened, his gaze flicking to the door. “It is my assignment, my lady,” he replied, but his tone wavered under her words.
Her lips curved into the faintest smile, bittersweet and alluring. “And yet, you show concern where others do not. I notice such things.” Her fingers trailed over the edge of the bed, drawing his eyes despite himself. “A woman like me… I am accustomed to being overlooked, dismissed. But you? You see me.”
Takresh’s jaw tightened, his armor clinking as he shifted uncomfortably.
She leaned slightly forward, her neckline dipping as if by accident. Her voice dropped, sultry and vulnerable at once. “Do you not tire of serving a man unworthy of your loyalty?”
He swallowed hard, unable to look away.
“You are not like the others,” she said, her voice low, as though confiding a secret meant only for him. “They come and go, indifferent, blind to the weight they carry. But you, Lord Takresh…” She paused, letting his name hang in the air like a caress. “You carry yourself differently. With purpose. With honor.”
He frowned, his hands tightening into fists at his sides. “I serve the Emperor. That is my purpose.”
She leaned back slightly, studying him, a soft smile playing on her lips. “You serve him well,” she admitted, her tone thoughtful, “but there is more to you than that. A strength, a resolve… You are a man destined for greatness, not just servitude.”
