Chapter 355: Forgotten Colony, Roanoak
Baxon Bragg, Daren Dorn, Lee Lovell, Ergon Ewell, and George Gorgas were the five infamous Overlords of the 14 original colonies that later formed the foundation of our great country.
On the day the last of their cursed bloodlines were executed, our founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence. It is widely rumored that the founders used the Overlords’ blood to write and sign the original Declaration on parchment made from a single sheet of skin flayed from Baxon Bragg’s back—the leader of the Overlords.
Considering the atrocities and tyranny committed by the Overlords, what our founding fathers did was seen more as an act of appeasement for the victims and their families. Those were brutal times, and it wouldn’t surprise Ace if the dark legends surrounding the founding of the world’s greatest democracy were true.
After a long chat with Mitch, who was high on his emotions, along with his new confidante Elinor, Ace learned a great deal about Mitch and his lineage, including the shocking and disturbing plans his family had for the country and its citizens, whom they viewed as descendants of traitors.
Mitch was, in fact, Emmitt Ewell, the 54th grandchild of one of Ergon Ewell’s surviving illegitimate daughters. She, along with other illegitimate children of the Overlords, had been hidden away in the forgotten colony of Roanoak. Allowing them to survive the purge.
The Roanoak Colony was the first colony established on this vast and beautiful land. The five Overlords were among its earliest settlers. However, for reasons lost to history, Roanoak was abandoned and forgotten, leaving only the 14 original and recognized colonies remembered by the world.
It turns out the five Overlords were behind the mysterious disappearance of the Roanoak Colony from history. It had served as their secret base, where they not only concealed their shameful and deformed bloodline but also hid their vast ill-gotten gains.
Yes, the Overlords’ treasure—long sought but never found by the founding fathers—was hidden in the Roanoak Colony, along with their illegitimate and deformed offspring, whom they were too ashamed to acknowledge publicly. These children were raised and trained to become the keepers of the Overlords’ treasure and guardians of the dark secrets buried deep within Roanoak Colony.
After the Overlords’ deaths, Roanoak Colony was ruled by their descendants. Rather than seeking vengeance for their fathers, they chose to remain hidden, isolating themselves from both worlds. In time, Roanoak evolved into an independent, self-governed country ruled by the Overlords’ illegitimate children—unknown to the world and completely off the map.
That is, until a century ago, when they partially emerged from the shadows under the guise of an organization known as the Roanoan Sentry. They allied themselves with enemies of the nation built on their fathers’ blood and skin, seeking to strengthen their position and undermine the country from within.
With the vast wealth accumulated by the Overlords during their centuries-long rule over the fourteen colonies, funding their secret country, the Roanoan Sentry, and their new allies was effortless.
Emmitt Ewell was the fifth son of a low-ranking noble from the hidden country of Roanoak. With little to no prospects in the isolated nation, he joined the Roanoan Sentry to earn enough merit to purchase a noble title back home. As such, his knowledge of the hidden Roanoak was limited—but still far greater than what the rest of the world knew.
Reading all this from Emmitt Ewell’s thoughts, Ace, who had been planning to raid the Overlords’ treasure before Prince and the government, was deeply disappointed. If he wanted to acquire the 36th shard of the Spirit Comet, he would now have to contend with an entire country of lunatics, isolated from the rest of the world for centuries.
And that was assuming he could even locate the Roanoak Colony hidden somewhere in the Stormy Gulf. Even if he managed to find it, he would still need to bypass its mysterious barriers and the curse array traps designed to keep outsiders away.
After uncovering all this, Ace couldn’t help but feel like he had just run a free errand for Prince and the government. As for the Curse Gadgets he had stolen—those were his loot, not compensation. He was confident even the government wouldn’t argue with him on that.
“Damn it. Damn it all,” Ace cursed in frustration. He had been planning a real treasure hunt, a true adventure, better than a subpar expedition like the one at Treasure Lake, but turns out this was a dud.
“Ace, what’s wrong?” Elinor asked, alarmed by his sudden change in mood. She and Mitch had been having a lighthearted conversation with him just moments earlier, talking about silly things that came to their mind, making his outburst feel jarring.
“Yeah, Ace. Everything okay?” Mitch added, forgetting that only a few minutes ago he had been screaming “assassin” at the same man.
“I need to leave,” Ace said abruptly.
Both Elinor and Mitch groaned in protest. Ignoring them, Ace turned to Elinor and said firmly, “I was never here.”
“Nope, I can’t lie for you,” Elinor said firmly, sticking to her principles. It was clear she wouldn’t go out of her way to tell anyone he had been there, but if asked directly, she wouldn’t lie.
“No, I would never ask you to lie for me,” Ace replied. “Here, take this USB drive. It contains all the information on the Overlords’ treasure and its location. Only share it with the General and your father, after they promise not to pursue me and leave my family alone. Can I trust you to do this one thing for me?”
He asked her this while employing his personal “user manual” on Elinor. As he expected, Elinor firmly nodded, holding the USB drive dearly.
“Oh, buddy, you’re seriously underestimating your government,” Mitch cut in. “They’ll flood your house and toss you down here with me just to figure out how and what you’ve learned from. And I have to say, I’m a little disappointed you’d take advantage of my helplessness like that.”
Mitch’s warning was clear: Ace’s plan was about as useful as a used condom—completely useless and better off trashed.
“Thanks for the heads-up,” Ace said casually. “But I have my own arrangements. And sorry if I hurt your feelings, buddy—occupational hazard.”
With that, Ace vanished from the interview room after disabling DD’s spores in the duo’s bodies.
Regaining his sobriety, Mitch suddenly shouted, “Wait, don’t go! Give me some more of that stuff—I’m going to need it now more than ever!”
