Chapter 107: who hurt her
Rose glanced at Roland briefly, pretending not to notice him staring at her with a frown, as if he were upset. She was entirely focused on herself—her own mood, everything that had happened to her.
The sound of the door clicking open caught their attention. Five police officers entered the ward, and Rose simply stared at them coldly. The officers greeted them before stepping forward toward Rose’s bed.
“Ma’am, we need to get some details from you about what happened,” one of the officers said, gesturing toward Rose.
She looked at him blankly, saying nothing. The officer hesitated, an awkward expression crossing his face. He didn’t know what to say or how to proceed—the way Rose was looking at him, it was as if he were the one responsible for the accident in her office.
Roland offered the officer a polite smile and stepped in. “Officer, please, I believe she is still in shock. Her legs… they have been…” He trailed off, unable to finish. He didn’t want to say it out loud, didn’t want to remind Rose of her ruined, damaged legs.
The officers exchanged glances, understanding his meaning. However, they still needed to conduct their investigation.
“Ma’am, I’m sorry to bring this up and remind you of your trauma, but we need to understand what happened. This is for your own good—we’re trying to seek justice for you,” the officer said gently.
Rose clenched her fists, staring at him as she fought back the tears threatening to spill. She took a deep breath before finally speaking.
“I don’t know what happened,” she said. “All I know is that I was in my office, working, when I heard an explosion. At first, it didn’t seem like it came from inside my office. When I heard it, I got up and tried to leave, but I couldn’t. Then there was another explosion—it caught me off guard, and I was trapped in the disaster. I hit the door, I tried to call for help—I called my contacts to come and rescue me—but no one came. No one came.”
Her words weren’t accusatory; she was simply recounting everything in detail.
While Rose was speaking, Zara, Roland, and Damien all felt a heavy weight settle in their hearts. Roland clenched his fists—he hadn’t been there to protect her when she needed him most. He was supposed to be there, to keep her safe. If he had moved faster, if she had been in his grasp, if he had just answered the call when she tried to reach him, everything might have been okay.
Zara, however, felt the most guilt. Rose was her best friend—her best friend, no matter what. Even if those worthless men hadn’t come to rescue her, as her friend, she should have been the one to go. She should have been there for Rose, should have saved her, should have done something. But she wasn’t. She had been too caught up in her own life, too distracted by personal matters to realize what Rose was going through. The shame burned in her chest, so much so that she couldn’t even bring herself to meet Rose’s eyes.
“Ma’am, thank you for sharing this with us,” the officer said, closing the notebook where he had been recording details. “We’re going to proceed with our investigation. But please, do you have any suspects in mind? Anyone who might have wanted to harm you?”
A suspect?
Rose clenched her fists as the officer’s words echoed in her mind. Did she have a suspect? What should she say? Her thoughts spiraled. She had never wronged anyone in her life—at least, no one except her mother and sister, who always seemed to have it out for her. They were constantly at her throat, creating problems for her at every turn.
Her mother’s name didn’t come to mind immediately, but Jennifer’s did.
Jennifer.
But because Roland was here, she couldn’t say it. She couldn’t tell them that Jennifer was the one who hurt her.
Slowly, Rose met the officer’s gaze and shook her head, choosing to lie. “No, I don’t know who did this.”
The officer let out a deep breath, disappointment flickering across his face. “Alright, ma’am. Thank you. We’ll continue our investigation.”
It was clear things wouldn’t be as simple as they had hoped.
The officers exchanged parting words before leaving the room.
Once they were gone, Roland stepped closer to Rose, his voice gentle. “Rose, are you okay? Are you feeling uncomfortable anywhere?”
Rose didn’t spare Roland a glance. She only mumbled, “I’m okay. Where is Toby? I want to see him.”
After speaking, she turned her head to the side, lying down on the bed with one hand resting on her stomach, eyes closed. It was obvious she was trying to ignore him, but Roland didn’t let it bother him.
Zara took the opportunity to step past Roland and move closer to Rose. “Don’t worry, Rose. I’ll go and get Toby from your dad right now. You know he’s still not well, and you can’t leave the hospital. I’ll bring Toby to you.”
Rose merely hummed in response, offering no further words. The room fell into an awkward silence.
Roland glanced around, then grabbed an extra chair and sat down. Fortunately, there were two more seats available.
Zara noticed Rose was now awake, nibbling on a piece of fruit. Though she was eating, every swallow seemed painful—her throat must have been affected by the explosion. She couldn’t talk much.
Zara approached, placing the plate of fruit closer to her. “Your father took Toby to the amusement park,” she said gently. “Toby still doesn’t know what happened to you. Do you really want him to see you like this?”

Zara sighed, picking up a piece of fruit to offer Rose.
Rose hesitated, her heart aching. “I don’t want him to see me in this condition. Maybe I shouldn’t meet with him now. When I’m feeling a little better, I’ll see Toby.”
She hated the thought of not being able to see him, but it was for the best. She didn’t want to upset him or make him worry.
Zara offered a small smile. “Even if you can’t see him in person, you can still talk to him through a video call. We just need to adjust the hospital setting a little to make it less intimidating for him.”
Rose glanced at Zara, considering her words.
