Chapter 111: Missing mummy
Tobi was playing with toys in his room, a very beautiful room that his grandpa made for him. He had been enjoying himself these days in his grandpa’s house, but then something crept into his small heart. It was about his mother—he had not seen her for days. He missed her. He wanted to talk to her, see her, and hug her, but only if that was possible because of their distance.
“I want to see my mummy,” Tobi said, dropping his Peppa Pig doll to the ground, making it roll several times on the carpet before it finally landed stable on the ground.
Mr. Stewart Dare, who was just rolling on the shelves to look for some old children’s books for Tobi to read, turned to his grandson who was suddenly asking about his mother.
He wondered in his heart if he wasn’t fun anymore, if he had lost the guinness in him, and that Tobi might have gotten bored.
His hand, trying to remove the book from the shelf, stopped the action and he turned to Tobi.
He asked,
“You, why do you suddenly want to see your mamma? Don’t you want to stay with grandpa anymore?” He stared at his grandson seriously.
Tobi paused, his small lips not knowing how to answer his grandfather. All he knew was that he wanted to see his mummy. He didn’t want to hurt his grandfather’s feelings. He wanted to be a good boy and keep his grandfather company, but he suddenly missed his mummy so much he couldn’t reject those urges or hide them somewhere.
Tobi blinked his eyes, fumbling with his small fingers. He said to his grandfather—
“Grandpa is fun, but Mummy—I miss my mummy. I want to see her.” No matter how fun his grandfather was, he wanted to see his mummy! It was as if he would start to cry any moment from now if his grandpa didn’t let him talk to his mummy or go see her.
Darius, in his mind, was encouraging him to cry out and be stubborn and say that he wants to go and see their mummy.
Mr. Stewart seemed to have thought for a moment, hearing the last of Tobi’s words. It seemed there was still a chance that his grandson wouldn’t leave him and go to his mother. There were other ways he could talk to his mother and see her. Mr. Stewart asked Tobi with a small smile,
“By that, do you mean a video call? Tobi, let me let you see your mummy.”
Tobi’s eyes widened, and he nodded immediately.
“Hmm hmm.”
Even if it was just seeing his mummy, it was okay. He missed her a lot. He just wanted to see that she was okay, not sick, nothing had happened to her.
Why was his small heart bothered so much? He just missed his mummy. He wanted to talk to her, hear her voice, see her face, her eyes—to just know that she was there.
Mr. Stewart moved his hand to pinch Tobi’s cheeks, and he said in agreement,
“Okay, dear. Here’s the phone. Talk to your mummy.”
Tobi smiled immediately. His heart kept beating as he saw his grandpa bring out his phone to call his mummy so he could talk to her.
…
It was just at the small apartment. Rose was resting, taking a nap, when her phone made sounds, arousing her from her sleep.
Groggily, she woke up, going to her phone to take the call. She saw that it was her son, Tobi. A smile couldn’t help but bloom on her face—he finally called her. She had not seen him for long; she was beginning to miss him. She bet he was missing her too.
After the video call was connected, Rose could see Tobi.
“Hello, son. How are you doing, you and Grandpa?”
Tobi stared at her with big round eyes—his mummy. He finally saw her. He finally saw his mummy. She was okay, talking to him. Nothing had gone wrong or happened.
Immediately, Tobi smiled at Rose. His small teeth could be seen.
He held his Peppa Pig toy tighter and giggled.
“Grandpa is cool, but I just wanted to see you.”
Tobi seemed very happy staying with her father. She couldn’t help but think he was so cheerful and wanted to tease her son, and so she said,

“Uhh, that’s sweet. You miss me already?”
Tobi nodded his head immediately like a bear.
“Yes, I miss Mummy a lot. That’s why I wanted to talk to you.”
He missed his mummy. He wanted to hug her. But Grandpa was cool—he gave him a lot of cookies that his mummy doesn’t give him, so he wanted to stay with his grandpa.
But he missed his mummy though. Tobi paused his lips and said to Rose,
“It’s been boring without Mummy.”
His eyes dropped like he would fall to tears any moment from now if he wasn’t comforted.
Rose stretched her hand to the phone, almost as if she could reach him and comfort him, but she stopped. She couldn’t comfort him right now.
“Uh, son, don’t be sad. Mummy will be going on a business trip. You will stay with Grandpa for some time, can you do that? I promise to always call you,” she said, looking at Tobi and observing his expression.
“Yes, Mummy, I understand. I’m a big boy. I won’t disturb you since you will be going on a business trip.”
Tobi showed his clean white teeth, forming a small fist. He wasn’t a crybaby that missed his mum every time.
“That’s my good boy. Now I want you to keep remembering Mummy like this, ok? Mummy will be sad if you don’t remember her.”
Rose laughed, holding her chest. What a sweet son, her dear son. She was tempting humans at the same time, wanting him to remember her.
“Ok, Mummy,” Tobi told her, waving his hand, knowing that the call would soon be ending. He carried no sadness but only joy on his face. He was happy to talk to his mother.
Rose’s attention was now focused on her father. She parted her lips and then said to him,
“Bye, Dad. Talk to you later.”
Her father nodded in affirmation as if he understood exactly what she had said. His words were:
“Stay safe, dear. Hope you reco—”
Rose waved for the last time before the call ended.
“Hmm, I understand. Bye, Father.”
…
Zara walked in holding two packaged bags in one hand. She had caught a glimpse of Rose’s form before she asked,
“Was that Tobi and your dad?”
Rose muttered, Rose nodded and sighed before moving to make herself comfortable on the bed.
“Yes, it was. I miss them already.”
“Don’t worry, you can still talk to them later.”
Zara looked at Rose as if she was able to read the conflicted emotions in her eyes.
“I know,” Rose mumbled with her eyes closed. The person that made her like this… they will pay for making her like this and getting her into this situation.
“Jennifer,” she mumbled through gritted teeth.
