Chapter 126: Look at nature
As they made their way toward the beach, Rolan pushed Rose in a wheelchair. The outskirts of the beach were lively, with coconut trees swaying in the breeze. The sea and ocean were alive with movement, and flying creatures made noise, signaling the vibrancy of life. Rose folded her arms, feeling helpless. Rolan had brought her here, saying she needed fresh air and some relief—a vacation. But how was she supposed to enjoy this vacation when she was with the person she hated more than anything? Rose wondered to herself.
“Look at nature,” Rolan said. “How long has it been since you’ve seen nature like this? Isn’t it beautiful? Can’t you appreciate it for once?” he asked, moving to catch a butterfly that had flown by. He opened Rose’s palm and placed the butterfly in her hand. “Isn’t it beautiful? Back in the city, do you see butterflies like this?”
Rose stared at the butterfly in her hand, her thoughts drifting. She wanted to ask Rolan something, but she was so focused on the delicate creature. As the butterfly’s wings fluttered, she noticed tiny dust particles falling from it. She was shocked to see that the butterfly seemed to be losing its beauty.
“What’s wrong with the little guy? Is it sick?” she murmured softly, feeling pity for the butterfly.
“It’s just okay,” Rolan said. “A butterfly doesn’t need you to hold it for long. You should let it go.” He stretched out his hand and held Rose’s, and Rose let the butterfly leave her palm.
“Do you think showing me a little butterfly will calm my mood and make me stop being angry with you, Mister Rolan? Do you think you’re very smart?” Rose said, trying to act tough. She wouldn’t let him see her weakness in any way, no matter how kind he was being.
“For your information, I wasn’t distracted by the butterfly you showed me,” Rose continued, trying to pretend she wasn’t affected by the butterfly on her palm. “Since you weren’t touched by the butterfly, how about some coconut drink?” Rolan simply nodded, and someone appeared out of nowhere, rolling a coconut drink toward her. Rolan took it and placed it in her hand. The coconut drink smelled nice, and she took a sip, but then she pulled it back, pretending to be upset.
“I don’t want to drink it,” she said, acting like she wasn’t tempted by the drink.
“Don’t be shy. It’s just a simple drink,” Rolan said.
“I know it’s just an ordinary drink, and that’s exactly why I don’t want to drink it. You can’t buy me with some ordinary juice, Rolan. And I hate every moment I’m spending with you right now. I don’t want to stay with you at all.”
Rose suddenly rolled her wheelchair away.
“Where are you going?” Rolan asked. “You should come back. This is a place to calm your heart. The psychologist said you need a moment of peace in a quiet environment.”
Rose stopped in her tracks, halting the wheelchair. She turned it around and rolled back to Rolan. “What did you say? Psychologist? Do I look crazy to you, Rolan? Do I look like I’m mad?” she questioned, staring at him furiously.
“I didn’t mean it like that,” Rolan said, unable to finish his words before Rose interrupted.
“Yeah, it’s obvious what you meant. You said you went to see a psychologist. That’s what they call someone who thinks I’m mad. I heard you loud and clear. You’re seeing a psychologist, which means you think I’m sick in the head.”
“Rose, I’m not saying you’re sick,” Rolan said, holding her arm and looking at her kindly, trying to make her understand what he meant. “All I’m saying is that in your situation, you need a psychologist to help you. Your legs aren’t physically injured; it’s mental. That’s why you feel like you can’t get up and walk or do anything. I’ve done research for you and found solutions on how you can walk again. The doctor provided a solution. Please, you shouldn’t be fixated on me. You need to follow the doctor’s advice.”
Rose glared at him, her eyes flashing with anger. “You’re such a sweet liar,” she said. “You’re treating me like I’m crazy. That’s why you went to find a psychologist for me. Rolan, I might be crippled, but I haven’t lost my mind. Just because I don’t want to be with you doesn’t mean I’m crazy. Okay, I’m normal, Rolan. I’m normal, and that’s not my mindset.”
Rolan’s voice rose, commanding and authoritative. “Rose, why do you despise me so much? I’ve asked you this question several times. Answer me. You really want to know? Your patience has worn thin. You should just give him an answer. He’s only wronged you once, and now he’s trying to make up for it. But you shouldn’t break his confidence every time. You shouldn’t insult him just because he made a mistake once.”
Rose’s voice was cold. “So, you’re obsessed with me? If you’re upset with me, I’m reacting to you right now. Rolan, just go away. Don’t talk to me. Take me back home. Is that not enough for you? Is it not enough for you?” she said, her shoulders trembling.
—
“Let me get you another coconut drink,” Rolan said, cutting off her words. “I believe you regret pouring out the other one.” He clapped his hands, and the person bringing the coconut arrived as if they understood. Rolan handed the coconut to her. “Drink it. It’ll calm your temper. After you’ve drunk it, we’ll go see some exotic flowers. I believe you’ll like them. Anger issues aren’t good for a pretty lady like you, Rose.”
Rose only stared at the cup sitting on her thigh. She felt embarrassed and didn’t know what to say. She felt like she was really sick in this moment, being more active, angry, screaming, and yelling at him while he was just calm and collected, supporting her. Yet, she still stretched her hand out and took the juice, drinking it awkwardly. “Thank you,” she mumbled, sipping the coconut juice.
Rolan shifted closer to her and roughly ran his hand through her hair. She couldn’t say a word to oppose him again. “I understand your situation, Rose. Maybe instead of thanking me…” He leaned in and gave her a kiss on the cheek.
As Rolan said this, Rose brought her cup and raised her hand to slap him. “You damn bastard!” The slap landed on his hand instead.
