Chapter 34: Her mother
There was no need to tell mummy; she would be worried.
And Darius gave reasons why the other kids did not like him.
They did not like him because he was smarter than them, and at his age, he was in their class, so they were just jealous.
Rose ruffled Tobi’s head, giving him a tight hug before asking,
“How was school, son? Did you make many friends today?”
Tobi wanted to shake his head, saying no, as Rose had asked him, but he then paused a little and said yes.
Rose deeply smiled, hearing his response. It was nice if all kids just made friends and didn’t leave her with some issues to solve at the children’s council. The issue with the principal she had resolved. She guessed that the principal was an honest lady from the start. It was her intuition at first, but now that the lady had carried out her promise and duty as a principal, she had won the goodwill of Rose.
“Honey, come, let’s go home. Anything you wanna eat?” Rose, turning to Tobi, held his small hand, leading him out of the school gate. On her way, she felt herself colliding with someone, but she stopped her body before it could clash with the person. The person, so it seemed, was fast and was not affected by the little harmless accident.
Rose raised her head, finally meeting the face of the person that she had almost collided with.
The principal smiled, bringing her hand for a handshake.
“Nice to meet you again, Tobi’s mom. It’s quite an unexpected coincidence, isn’t it?”
“Yes, it is,” Rose nodded, bringing her hand and accepting the handshake.
“Hi, Tobi. How was your day at school?” The principal bent to Tobi’s height after noticing the short guy, smiling at him with the question.
Tobi nodded, looking with round eyes at the principal. “Fine. School was great.”
“Very mature of a little guy like you, isn’t it?”
The principal chuckled at Tobi’s response.
Rose watched their interaction with a smile.
“It was lovely meeting you for the second time. Hope we meet again.” Rose held Tobi’s hand, deciding that it was time to go, and the principal accepted her politeness.
“It was nice meeting you too, Miss Rose. Hope we could really meet and have some tea together.”
It was an offer from the teacher, and Rose nodded.
“Sure, no problem. I’ll see if I’ve got the time.”
“Bye, Tobi,” the principal said. Tobi waved back at her.
…
Rose was happiest when she got home, but with no time to rest, her mommy called her on the phone. Rose was shocked, and her hand trembled as she held the phone. She couldn’t believe it—her mother was calling her after a long time of silence. There was a fear rising in her heart when she saw her mother’s number. Why was she calling? Rose bit her lips, glancing a little at Toby, who was watching her with concern.
“Let’s go home, dear,” Rose said to Tobyi, pretending as if nothing was going on. Tobi nodded, not understanding why his mother suddenly looked very sad and in the wrong mood.
Rose put Tobi to sleep, and then she sat on the couch, wearing her handkerchief dress and lost in deep thought. Why had her mother called her after so many years? She felt uneasy, as though a problem was about to arise. Rose did not want to believe it. Should she call her back, or should she not? She was panicking in her heart. Finally, she decided. Rose took her phone and called the number back.
Ding. Ding. Ding.
As she called the number, the phone started ringing without stopping. When someone finally answered, a familiar voice came on the line. Rose was tense.
.Rose was expecting nicer words coming from the caller, but then the voice that was so familiar to her came in much harsher. “You are getting very disobedient, you damn daughter of mine. Many years back, you fled and left all of us, and now you are back. You cannot come to visit us. I saw your sister; she told me that she had seen you, so you have been back all along.”

Rose’s heart did not stop beating in her chest as she heard her mother talking. It was as if she was feeling heavy rain pouring on her body. Her mood was almost cheerful at the start of her mother’s conversation. Her mother sounded like she was concerned and really worried about her, but it was all a façade.
When her mother started talking about Jennifer, Rose’s fingers that were holding her phone clenched tighter, controlling herself from saying any words to her mother. She did not want to say any words to her mother. Her mother’s voice over the phone sounded more furious, hearing that Rose was not responding to her.
“Look, listen to me, child. You are the cause of my life, the reason for all my problems, since the very first day I gave birth to you. I wondered why I did not abort you the very first day I found out that I was pregnant with you. But sadly, I could not abort a child that was of werewolf blood. But you—you are such a disgrace to me. You are not even a werewolf, and I could not even abort you.
“And besides, I want you to listen very clearly to me. You should stay away from Rolan. He belongs to Jennifer. Jennifer, my best child, warned that man. He had always belonged to her. Since the very first day she ran away from that marriage, Rolan was already hers. He was always hers. It was just that she ran away for some break, and you had taken her place.
“So now that she is back, you ran away, and now Rolan—Jennifer is the real woman that belongs to him. So my message to you today as I am calling you is to tell you that you should stay away from Rolan. Don’t go near him.”
