Chapter 49: Knock the door no response
Rose walked into the large, wide room full of people—there were people everywhere.
Her face carried a smile as she held little Tobi beside her. Today was a joyous occasion, a very special day for her best friend, Zara.
Rose felt Tobi poking her arm. Feeling the sensation, she looked down at her son, who was trying to get her attention.
She smiled at him and asked, “What is it, dear son? Are you hungry? We just got here, but don’t worry—I’ve got your milk prepared for you. I also packed your snacks in my bag.”
Tobi shook his head, his gestures saying no.
He had only tapped his mummy to make sure she was really his usual mummy and not the different one.
That day at Grandma’s house, he had sensed that his mummy was different—but not in an evil way. She was still kind, but she didn’t like to talk much, and she seemed more powerful than his usual mummy.
He had asked Darius what was going on, but Darius kept quiet and refused to answer him. Darius, who was usually so talkative, had suddenly gone silent when Tobi asked why his mummy felt different. All he said was:
“I don’t know.”
But the truth was, Darius was upset. The mummy Tobi was sensing was actually his wolf mummy—the side of her that was more instinctual, more powerful.
Darius didn’t like it because when that mummy was around, he couldn’t be as mischievous as he wanted to be. And that made him sad. He wanted to be as mischievous as possible.
Just then, a woman with long, raven-dark locks, beautiful full bangs, and dressed all in black approached Rose. The click of her fake high heels echoed as she stepped forward.
Rose’s face lit up with a smile, spreading warmth as she recognized Jennifer. She was as gorgeous as ever. Today was her day, and she needed to look extra beautiful.
She wanted her beauty to outshine everyone else.
“You came for me,” zarasaid, her voice filled with emotion. “You don’t know how I felt. I thought no one would come for me. But you came. You don’t know how happy I am that you’re here.”
Zara smirked, holding Rose’s hand. Rose smiled back, squeezing her hand in return. It was as if the two of them were about to cry right there.
Tobi looked at his mummy and his aunt, watching them act like two little twin sisters about to burst into tears at any moment.
Rose wiped the tears from her eyes, still smiling. These were tears of joy.
“Finally, you’re an official lawyer. One day, you’ll reach the judge’s seat.”
Becoming a lawyer had always been Jennifer’s dream—she wanted to fight for those facing problems.
Well, partially because Zara had chosen to be a lawyer because of her. Zara had always said she would be the one to handle Rose’s divorce case.
Rose laughed at the thought.
And then, she remembered—she hadn’t fully divorced Rolan yet. Somehow, she was still his legal wife.
Things were messy. She was just a runaway wife.
“I’m so proud of myself, Rose. Finally, I’m done with this. And I even have my business plans. I can’t just be a lawyer—I know it’s not certain that I’ll make enough money. But I wouldn’t be so evil as to wish for cases every day just so I could earn more. It would feel like feeding on people’s suffering.”
Rose nodded at Zara’s words, then said, “Let’s go get a milkshake. Let’s celebrate with something sweet since it’s a sweet occasion.” Her voice carried laughter at the end.
Zara giggled and nodded.
Tobi watched them and absentmindedly sucked on his thumb, keeping his thoughts to himself.
Rose and Zara left the crowd, walking to a milkshake stand nearby.

After ordering, they took their seats. Rose carefully lifted Tobi and placed him in his own chair—his little legs were too short to reach the ground.
Zara took a sip of her milkshake before asking, “So, have you finally left your old house? Have you moved into the new one your father gave you?”
Rose nodded, wiping Tobi’s lips with a handkerchief before answering briefly.
“Yes, I moved out. Rolan was stalking me. But finally, girl, I got a new house, and now he can’t bother me anymore.”
The smile in her eyes was unmistakable.
Zara grinned, taking another sip of her milkshake. She enjoyed it very much. After finishing, she responded,
“Uh-huh. You’ve got a crazy ex, girl, but don’t worry. Now that I’m a lawyer, Rolan can’t do anything to you. I’ll fight for you.”
Her voice was full of enthusiasm.
Before Rose could respond, Zara went back to drinking her milkshake. Rose laughed in her heart—Zara really loved milkshakes.
And it seemed that Tobi did too. When Rose turned to look at him, he was sipping his milkshake, his eyes slightly closing from the sweetness.
Rose looked down at her own milkshake, finally deciding to take a sip. She couldn’t be the only one left out of this moment of sweetness.
Zara suddenly pouted, shaking her cup.
“My milkshake is finished.”
“Well, how wouldn’t it be?” Rose raised a brow, amusement flickering in her eyes. “The way you were drinking it so fast, how wouldn’t it finish?”
Zara noticed that Rose was trying to hold back her laughter, so she playfully tapped her cup with her freshly polished nails and changed the subject.
“Have you met Kelvin Klein yet? How was he? Was he handsome?”
Rose raised a brow, looking at her.
“Yeah, I met him.”
“And? Was he handsome?” Zara asked, her smile not fading.
“Yeah, he is.”
Zara let out a dramatic squeal.
“Girl, do you think he’s more handsome than Rolan? Is he?”
“I’m not answering that.”
Rose’s mood dimmed. Without another word, she gave Tobi the rest of her milkshake. He took it happily, taking a sip.
“Thanks, Mummy,” Tobi said in his sweet little voice. Rose nodded, smiling.
Zara narrowed her eyes at Rose’s response.
“Why do I feel like you didn’t enjoy your time with Mr. Kelvin?” she asked, voicing her suspicions.
“It’s not that… I just don’t want you to bring up Rolan.”
She didn’t want to talk about him.
When was the last time she had even seen him?
Right—at her mother’s house.
And she didn’t want to remember that. Not right now.
“Okay.” Zara nodded, dropping the topic.
…
Outside a white estate, a sleek dark car pulled up and parked.
Rolan stepped out, dressed in a sharp, dark suit that accentuated his tall frame. His neatly styled hair brought out his striking features.
He had come to see Rose.
He chuckled to himself, already picturing the expression she would make when she saw him standing at her door.
A small smirk formed at the corner of his lips as he reached for the bouquet of flowers he had brought.
Then, he walked toward her doorstep.
Climbing the stairs, he kept thinking about the moment he’d see her face again.
Finally reaching her door, he took a deep breath.
All he had to do was ring the doorbell, and he would see her again.
Rolan took a deep breath keeping himself calm and knocked.
He waited.
No response.
Frowning, he knocked again—harder this time.
Still nothing.
That was odd. If Rose were home, he would have already heard her stomping to the door, probably cursing under her breath before swinging it open to glare at him.
But there was no sound at all.
His hands clenched into fists. The bouquet slipped from his grip, falling to the floor.
His expression darkened.
“Rose… did you leave without telling me?”
