Chapter 56: Bunny have you been arrested?
Rose stared at the officer, her fists clenching.
She had only told the officer that she had a husband because she felt like they wouldn’t let her leave with Tobi otherwise. They were going to keep her here. Here, women weren’t allowed to leave with their children alone. In werewolf communities, a complete family was required—either you had one, or the state would provide one for you.
Rose’s shoulders trembled as she raised her head, looking at the officer.
“My husband is a busy man. He’s out of the state; he can’t come right now. Officer, won’t you give me my son?” Rose asked, hoping the officer would let her leave with Tobi. She didn’t want him to say anything else that would complicate things further.
She had already spent too much time here. The last thing she wanted was for the officer to force her to call Rolan.
The officer standing before her folded his arms, his cold gaze piercing through her.
His words were just as cold, engraved into her ears like an unshakable verdict.
“I’m sorry, ma’am, but you can’t take this child just because you claim he’s your son. We won’t release him until you bring his father.”
Rose held the officer’s gaze, forcing herself to maintain her composure. She had expected this response, but she had still hoped—still prayed—that the officer wouldn’t say such a thing. That he would let her go with Tobi.
Even now, Rose couldn’t fully understand how Tobi had ended up here. She was controlling her disappointment, but the frustration lingered. Kids could be troublesome at times, and Tobi had managed to get himself into a situation that might separate them.
All of this—just because of an apple.
Her child had gotten into trouble because other kids had tricked him into going there.
Rose cleared her throat, trying to think of the right words to say. Her tone was now desperate, pleading, the emotion thick in her voice.
“Officer, please let me take my son. You can’t separate a mother from her child.”
Her voice carried tears, and soon, they spilled from her eyes. She clenched her fists. To hell with werewolf law—they should give her son back to her.
Only if… only if Tobi weren’t a werewolf.
For a brief moment, she wished that were true. If her son had been human, this wouldn’t be happening. The police wouldn’t have cared if she was a single mother. Humans didn’t enforce complete family units. They would have just ignored it, as they always did.
But Tobi was a werewolf. And in werewolf society, every wolf was supposed to have their fated mate, their destined family.
Officer Isaac narrowed his eyes, his expression growing even colder as he walked away and sat in his chair.
“Madam, you’re not serious,” he scoffed. “Spare me the crocodile tears and go bring your husband to me—if you even have one.”
He didn’t believe her. How could he? Human traffickers had pulled this same stunt before, pretending to be the mothers of werewolf cubs. He had seen it too many times to fall for it.
He wasn’t going to take Rose’s words at face value. His job was to serve justice with his brain, not his emotions.
It seemed like there was no other way for her to get Tobi back. The officer was forcing her into a corner, pushing her toward a decision she didn’t want to make.
He was going to make her call that man.
He was going to make her call Rolan.
And that was the last thing she wanted.
Rose smiled, trying to hide the sadness in her eyes from the officer. She couldn’t let him see how much this had affected her. The police were already suspicious enough of her, and showing any more desperation would only make things worse.
“Just give me a sec, Officer,” Rose said, raising a finger to excuse herself as she pulled out her phone and stepped out of the room.
“That’s what you should have done all along,” Officer Isaac muttered, his voice laced with cold, bitter mockery.

To him, it was a simple matter—Rose just had to call her husband. Yet, instead of doing so immediately, she had stood there, wasting his time, trying to argue.
“Hey, kiddo, why are you looking at me like that?” Isaac asked, turning toward one of the little prisoners after sensing eyes on him.
Tobi quickly hid his head between his knees, not wanting to meet the officer’s gaze. He hadn’t understood the conversation between the officer and his mommy, but he could see that she was sad. And it was because of this man.
Tobi had been staring at the officer, wondering why he was being so mean to his mommy.
Inside his mind, Darius was jumping and skipping around, yelling that they should go and punch the officer. But Tobi just buried his head deeper between his legs and ignored him.

At the back of the station, in a narrow space where no one else stood, Rose’s fingers trembled as she frantically dialed Rolan’s number.
It started ringing.
Once.
No answer.
Rose’s heart sank.
Why wasn’t Rolan picking up?
Lately, he had been acting so enthusiastic, always calling her, always trying to be involved. But now, when she actually needed his help, he wasn’t answering?
Had it all been an act?
Had he just been pretending to care, playing games with her emotions?
She had almost been fooled again.
But this wasn’t the time to doubt him. She forced herself to stay calm and dialed again.
This time, the call went through. A soft beep echoed in her ear before his voice came.
“What’s up, Bunny? You finally decided to call me?”
Rolan’s cocky tone sent a jolt through her chest.
Was he back to acting smug again? Had he ignored her call on purpose?
Was this all a joke to him?
Rose swallowed down her bitterness and spoke, forcing the words past the lump in her throat.
“Please, Rolan, I need you to do me a favor.”
Her voice was weak. Too weak.
Rolan sensed it immediately, but instead of acknowledging it, he chose to keep up his usual act.
“What’s the favor? Why should I help you? I don’t just do favors for free, you know.”
Her heart shattered a little more at his words. She needed him. But here he was, joking around.
Couldn’t he tell how serious this was for her?
“Are you helping me or not?” she asked, her voice shaking.
Her palm was sweaty as she gripped her phone tighter.
There was a brief silence.
Then, the sound of a throat clearing.
Finally, Rolan spoke again.
“What is it? I’ll help you… if it’s within my power.”
Rose let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. Relief and frustration clashed inside her.
“If it’s within your power?” she almost wanted to scoff. “It’s Rolan.”
Still, she didn’t have the energy to argue.
“The location is Big B Town. The police station,” she stated flatly, her heart drained of all patience.
Silence.
Then, Rolan’s voice came through the phone again—this time, sharp with concern.
“Have you been arrested?!”
His exclamation made Rose pause.
For the first time, she sensed something in his tone.
He wasn’t calm anymore.
He was uneasy.
