Chapter 57: Hugs him and say he’s her husband.
“Please, just come and don’t ask any more questions,” Rose bit her lip as she spoke, then heard a faint response from Rolan before the call ended.
The moment the call disconnected, Rose turned to the wall, her body shaking as she burst into quiet sobs.
Her son wouldn’t be taken from her.
She had found a way.
Rolan would help her get Tobi back.
After a few moments of silent tears, Rose wiped her face and took a deep breath. She quickly texted Zara, explaining what had happened.
Once she was done telling her best friend about her situation, she stepped out of the dark corner and walked back toward the station, passing several officers who were patrolling outside.
—
The door to the officer’s office clicked open, and Rose stepped inside.
Officer Isaac, who had been sitting at his desk playing with his phone, raised his head to look at her. His expression was skeptical as he asked, “Where is your husband? I thought you were going to find him.”
It didn’t seem possible for her to have contacted him in such a short time.
Rose met his eyes with a confident smile.
“I just called him. He’ll be here soon, so don’t worry.”
Without waiting for a response, she turned and walked back to Tobi’s holding cell, sitting down beside him.
“Son, Mommy will get you out of here.”
Tobi lifted his head, his small face lighting up with a smile as he giggled.
“Mummy, you’re finally here! Tobi thought he wasn’t going to see Mummy again.” His voice wavered, as if he was on the verge of tears.
“It’s okay, dear. Don’t cry,” Rose soothed, reaching through the small bars to hold his tiny hands.
Tobi instinctively gripped her fingers, holding onto her tightly.
Officer Isaac watched the scene from his seat, his gaze cold and unreadable.
The bond between the woman and the child was clear. There was no denying that.
But rules were rules.
He wouldn’t let her take the boy until her husband arrived.
—
Time passed—perhaps too slowly, or maybe it only felt that way.
A soft click sounded at the door.
Rose’s head snapped up just in time to catch a glimpse of someone peeking in from behind the doorframe.
The movement was hesitant—almost childlike.
But what child could be that tall?

She narrowed her eyes as she took in the sight of dark hair and a shadowed figure lingering at the entrance.
“Who is that?” Officer Isaac frowned, his expression darkening.
If someone wanted to come in, they should just enter instead of wasting his time lingering outside like a fool.
“Ahem.”
A throat cleared from behind the door.
Then, one foot stepped inside.
A shoulder.
A head.
And finally, they could all see him clearly.
Rolan.
He stood in the doorway, dressed in a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up, paired with well-ironed black pants. A sheen of sweat glistened on his forehead, and the top buttons of his shirt were undone, revealing a hint of his toned chest.
—
“Honey, you’re here!”
Rose ran to him without hesitation, wrapping her arms around him and burying her face in his firm chest.
For a moment, Rolan stood stiffly, caught off guard.
Then, his hands slowly came down, wrapping around her tightly.
She was hugging him willingly.
After all this time avoiding him.
The thought ran through his mind, but he pushed it away, forcing himself to focus on the situation at hand.
Rolan smirked slightly before turning his gaze to the officer, his expression shifting to something more composed.
“Officer, nice to meet you,” he greeted, his smile easy and confident.
Rose turned slightly in Rolan’s arms, looking back at Officer Isaac.
“Officer, this is my husband, Mr. Rolan.”
Officer Isaac rose from his chair and saluted Rolan.
“Nice to meet you, Alpha.”
“Nice to meet you too,” Rolan nodded, acknowledging the officer’s respect.
Rose observed their interaction.
Rolan seemed to be handling things well. If this continued smoothly, they should be fine, and she could finally leave with her son.
“Um, Officer, you’ve seen my husband now. Can I go with my son?” Rose asked, glancing at Rolan before turning back to the officer.
Rolan’s heart pounded in his chest.
She called him her husband.
Even though this was all just an act, the words made his heartbeat quicken. He couldn’t help but steal a glance at her, a strange emotion stirring inside him.
The officer noticed the subtle exchange between them and briefly wondered if he had misjudged the situation.
Still, watching the couple wasn’t enough.
He had other procedures to follow to confirm if Rose was truly Rolan’s wife—and if Rolan was truly her husband.
—
“Mr. Rolan, have you been married to Rose? And for how long?”
The officer’s sharp gaze locked onto Rolan, watching closely for any sign of a lie.
Rolan met the officer’s eyes without flinching.
“Yes, she is my wife, and we’ve been married for more than five years.”
The officer’s brows twitched, and his stare lingered on Rolan for a long moment.
He couldn’t detect any dishonesty in his words.
It seemed he had failed to catch him in a lie.
He’s a good actor, the officer thought.
But there was still another test.
His next target was Tobi.
Rose’s heart skipped a beat as she watched the officer crouch down beside her son.
—
“Hey, kiddo, is that your papa? I mean, is that man your father?”
Tobi raised his small head, his innocent eyes filled with confusion.
He glanced at the officer—the uncle his mummy clearly didn’t like.
Tobi’s little mouth opened, ready to answer, but then he heard Darius’s voice echo in his mind.
“Say yes, Tobi! Tell him that he’s your father. You have to do this for Mummy, okay?”
Darius’s voice was laced with urgency, almost panicked.
Tobi hesitated for a split second, then quickly nodded.
“Yes, sir, he’s my daddy.”
The officer studied Tobi’s face, searching for any trace of a lie.
But Tobi’s innocent, wide eyes held no deception.
Still, this wasn’t the end of the investigation.
Further verification was needed.
—
The officer had Rolan and Rose sit together and proceeded to ask them questions about each other.
He asked about their likes, their favorite foods.
Rose correctly answered Rolan’s favorite dish, and Rolan effortlessly recalled what Rose liked to eat, thanks to some recent research he had done.
The officer continued, asking them about their dislikes—what or who they hated the most.
Their answers aligned perfectly.
The questioning dragged on, but both Rose and Rolan kept up with the act, matching each other’s responses flawlessly.
When the interrogation finally ended, the officer sat back and studied them in silence.
Then, his cold gaze fixed on them as he declared,
“I’ll be watching you both from now on.”
—
Rose shivered, her heart pounding in her chest.
They were going to be monitored by the police.
She and Rolan.
But it was just an act.
Rolan and she weren’t truly together.
Still, panic stirred in her mind.
Even so, Rose forced a smile—one so subtle that it was almost unnoticeable how fake it was.
“We have nothing to be afraid of,” she said, her voice steady despite the turmoil inside her. “Rolan and I are telling the truth.”
