An Nuan accompanied her family members while pretending as if she had not listened to her mother and elder brother’s conversation earlier that day.

She put a smile on her face and chatted with them over dinner.

Later, her elder brother took his family of three to return to their house, leaving An Nuan and her elders.

Her grandparents retreated to their bedroom early and her father went back to his study to deal with some documents.

Seeing that her mother was watching television, An Nuan decided to join her. She sat beside her mother on the large sofa and lay her head on her mother’s thigh.

Shi Xi chuckled when she saw her daughter. She played with An Nuan’s hair and smiled. “What is it? Why are you suddenly acting sticky to me?”

“Mom, just let me lay here for a while.” An Nuan flashed a smile before closing her eyes, seemingly enjoying her mother’s touch.

“You’re already a married woman. Why are you acting like a child?” There was a hint of pampering in her tone of voice.

An Nuan giggled before snuggling to a comfortable spot. Her eyes closed but An Nuan’s mind was full of her mother’s conversation with her elder brother.

After a while, she opened her eyes again and stared at her mother with a dazed look on her face.

Her mother’s attention was on the news playing on the television.

But after a while, Shi Xi finally realized that her daughter was staring at her.

Shi Xi tapped her finger on An Nuan’s forehead. “Why are you staring at me? Am I that pretty?”

An Nuan snapped out of her thoughts and smiled. “Mom, you are always pretty.”

Shi Xi chuckled at her daughter’s words.

An Nuan pursed her lips and hesitated. She wanted to ask her mother about the conversation that she overheard in the morning but was not sure where she should start.

“Mom,” An Nuan finally spoke after a while.

“What’s the matter?” Shi Xi’s eyes were especially gentle.

“Has Pei Zhi Yi’s family been bothering you again?”

Shi Xi’s expression changed slightly upon hearing that name again. She did not want to show her displeasure but she could not hide it from her daughter.

It was evident how much she did not like Pei Zhi Yi.

An Nuan had a helpless look on her face. She realized that she had never seen her mother with this expression before.

Shi Xi quickly hid her expression and tried to smile at her daughter. “Why are you asking this?”

An Nuan sat up properly to look at her mother. “I overheard your conversation with Elder Brother this afternoon. Pei Zhi Yi’s mother has been looking for you? What did she want?”

Shi Xi pursed her lips, refusing to answer.

“Mom, the last time, you told me that Mrs. Pei has been looking for you for Sun Jiao,” An Nuan continued when her mother did not reply for a long time. “What did she want from you this time?”

Mother An hesitated. “It’s…” She heaved a breath. “It’s nothing.”

An Nuan frowned. “Is it about Sun Jiao again?”

Shi Xi pondered over her daughter’s question and finally figured that it was not good to keep such a secret from her daughter. Sooner or later, An Nuan was going to hear from someone else. Moreover, Shi Xi was worried that An Nuan was going to find Mrs. Pei on her own and asked the family to stop pestering the An family.

An Nuan frowned. “Mom, what are you saying? I am already a married woman.”

Shi Xi heaved in relief upon hearing her daughter’s words. She was a bit worried that An Nuan would change her mind and divorce Lin Xiao Feng. Shi Xi had seen how her daughter always returned to Pei Zhi Yi’s side each time that young man hurt her.

The mother and daughter stared into each other’s eyes.
