Chapter 40: Willing to Listen

The frown between Lin Xiao Feng’s eyes did not disappear, no matter how hard he reminded himself to calm down. A faint sigh escaped his lips as he glanced at An Nuan who was seated next to him.

It was good that An Nuan was not afraid of his grandfather.

“What are you doing?” Lin Chuan glanced at the small pastries and fruits that his daughter-in-law had prepared before turning to An Nuan. “Why don’t you eat? Is the food not to your liking?”

An Nuan tried to smile. “Well, everything looked delicious. I don’t know where to start.”

Lin Xiao Feng stretched his hand and reached for the small egg tarts that his mother made and placed them on An Nuan’s plate. “You should try this. My mother made delicious egg tart.”

“Thank you.” An Nuan shot a thankful smile to Lin Xiao Feng. She reached for the egg tart, feeling awkward that everyone was looking at her. An Nuan placed the egg tart back on her plate before reaching for another piece for the old man. “Grandfather, you should eat as well.”

Lin Chuan was startled to see the egg tart appearing on his plate. He raised his head to meet his grandson’s eyes as if saying that his grandson was not considerate enough.

His grandson only knew to place the pastry on his wife’s plate. He had forgotten about this old man.

The old man lowered his head to take a bite of his pastry. When he raised his head again, Lin Chuan could see that the atmosphere around the table was no longer as intense.

Lin Chuan adjusted his mood before he turned to An Nuan again. “I heard from Xiao Feng that the person you are supposed to marry left you on your wedding day.”

“Grandfather!” Lin Xiao Feng spoke suddenly. There was a hint of warning in his voice and his eyes.

“I want to talk to An Nuan,” Lin Chuan said. “If you are not happy, you can leave us here alone.”

Lin Xiao Feng pursed his lips. He could sense his grandfather’s anger. Lin Xiao Feng was mostly worried that his grandfather would lash out in front of his wife.

Instinctively, Lin Xiao Feng shifted his gaze to his mother, silently asking her what they should do.

“What are you both worried about?” Lin Chuan said as he noticed the mother and son exchanging a look. “I am not going to bully my granddaughter-in-law. I just wanted to talk to her. Is that not allowed?”

Lin Xiao Feng continued to look at his grandfather. He could tolerate his grandfather’s anger. However, he was not going to let his grandfather do anything to his wife.

When he married An Nuan, Lin Xiao Feng already promised himself that he would protect An Nuan and never hurt her. Of course, he would not let anyone closer to him hurt An Nuan as well.

“Grandfather.” An Nuan called. “You can say whatever you want to say to me. I am willing to listen.”

Lin Xiao Feng looked at An Nuan with worry.

Noticing his gaze, An Nuan placed a hand on Lin Xiao Feng’s, silently telling him that she would be alright.

“I know that my wedding with Xiao Feng was too rushed,” An Nuan continued. “Instead of discussing such an important matter with the elders, we decided to marry. And Xiao Feng… he was only trying to help me.”

Lin Xiao Feng narrowed his eyes.

Of course, the reason he married An Nuan was not what she had thought.

“You are aware that your marriage with Xiao Feng was too sudden,” Lin Chuan said. “Your decision back then was too rushed. You probably made that decision out of anger when that person left you.”

Lin Xiao Feng continued to observe An Nuan’s expression from the side. He had decided to take An Nuan away the moment this conversation with his grandfather turned ugly.

“You…” Lin Chuan gave An Nuan another scrutinizing look. “I supposed that you have composed your thoughts while you went away for that short break. Tell me… Have you regretted your decision? Are you planning to break up with my grandson?”

Lin Xiao Feng inhaled a sharp breath. He looked at his grandfather anxiously and hoped that the old man would stop talking.

He talked to An Nuan a while ago during their meal and they both decided to stay as a husband and wife. They were willing to cooperate, even though An Nuan planned to stay with him as a husband and wife only in name.

Lin Xiao Feng did not need his grandfather to put some ideas into An Nuan’s head.

“I don’t have that idea,” An Nuan said.

Lin Xiao Feng let out a breath of relief upon hearing An Nuan’s words.

An Nuan glanced at Lin Xiao Feng again. “As long as Lin Xiao Feng is willing to let me stay by his side, I don’t plan on a separation.”

“Oh?” Lin Chuan raised a brow.

“Grandfather, you know my situation well. Therefore, I won’t cover up anything from you,” An Nuan said. “You are right. I married Xiao Feng out of anger. But I believe that Xiao Feng and I have our reasons to stay together. And I believe that it would be better for us to stay married. I know that right now, there are a lot of people talking about Xiao Feng and me. If we chose to separate now, won’t we let them gossip more about us?”

Lin Chuan thought that An Nuan’s words sounded interesting. He tapped his fingers on the table as he continued to listen to what An Nuan was going to say.

“I heard about Xiao Feng’s reputation in politics. He was recently promoted and had a future in Capital City. Grandfather, I won’t do anything that would ruin Xiao Feng’s hard work.”

Lin Chuan laughed. He thought that An Nuan was someone who did not know anything. But it seemed that this young girl understood quite a lot of things.
