Chapter 454: Chapter 454: A Chaotic Battlefield
The battlefield was filled with chaos and destruction.
And survival became only more difficult for the average guard due to the constant instability of the allegiances on both sides.
Imagine how confusing it was! One moment you are fighting alongside your comrade, watching each other’s back when suddenly your good friend becomes corrupted and attacks you from behind.
Moreover, at the same time you are being attacked by a massive abyssal creature right in front of you, caught in a pincer attack you can only wait for death.
But then suddenly, the abyssal about to bite your head off shifts its target and launches itself at your corrupted ally, saving your life.
Your friend became an enemy, and in the next second your enemy became an ally.
This confusing situation was what was being showcased in various corners of the battlefield and began to affect their abilities to differentiate who they should be fighting.
Some people even hesitated to attack an abyssal, thinking that it had become an ally, and had paid dearly for it with their lives.
The abyssal demigod, a humanoid figure about double the size of the average adult human, watched the chaos and loomed over the field like a god of annihilation. Its hovering figure over the battlefield casting a shadow on the hearts of all those fighting below.
Its presence alone was suffocating, the air thick with the stench of decay and the oppressive weight of its abyssal energy.
The ground it hovered above cracked and splintered, almost as if its very presence emitted a gravitational pressure too great for it to bear.
The demigod’s glowing gold-violet eyes scanned the battlefield, and for the first time, a flicker of irritation crossed its otherwise impassive expression. Its subordinates were being turned against it, and now even one of its strongest generals had fallen. Something—or someone—was interfering with its plans.
The demigod shifted its strategy. Its massive form pulsed with an ominous black energy, the air around it distorting as if reality itself was bending under its will.
A low, resonant hum filled the air, vibrating through the bones of every combatant on the battlefield. The abyssals, both corrupted and those under Bea’s control, froze momentarily as if responding to some unseen command. Then, the horror began.
Bea felt it first—a sudden, violent tug on the abyssals she had painstakingly turned. Her microscopic form quivered as she sensed the connections she had worked so hard to establish being forcibly severed. The abyssals she controlled began to dissolve, their grotesque bodies twisting and contorting as black mist poured from their forms. The mist was drawn toward the demigod, swirling into its aura like water spinning down an unclogged drain.
Each abyssal lost was like a severed thread in Bea’s mind, there was no hope of re-establishing a connection to them.
Kain’s eyes widened as he watched in horror. The abyssals that had been fighting alongside him, their grotesque forms now writhing in agony, were being consumed by the demigod. Meanwhile, very few of those that Bea hadn’t infected were being consumed. Clearly, this ability was aimed at eliminating Bea’s influence. Moreover, it seemed to even have the added benefit of strengthening the abyssal demigod.
“Damnit!” he shouted, his voice barely audible over the sounds of battle. Though Bea couldn’t speak, the intense irritation and frustrated screams he picked up through their bond let him know her emotions were even worse than his. She was furious, desperate, and utterly powerless to stop what was happening.
Bea reached out with her will, trying to reinforce her control, but it was futile. The demigod’s power was too vast, its dominance over the abyssals was absolute. The level difference was insurmountable. The battlefield was being cleared of the creatures she had turned, and the demigod was growing stronger with every abyssal it consumed. As its form swelled, its dark energy intensified, and its oppressive aura crushed the spirits of all who stood against it.
The City Lord, Ishvaran, and his two contracts—the dragon, its scales glistening like molten gold, and the armored giant, its massive frame battered and bruised—were struggling to hold their ground.
The dragon’s fiery breath, once a blazing inferno, sputtered and died under the weight of the demigod’s aura. The armored giant, already wounded, was practically forced to return to the ground and leave the battlefield in the sky under the crushing weight of the demigod’s aura.
Ishvaran’s face was grim, his usual calm demeanor replaced by a look of desperation. He knew they were losing.
Bea knew she had to act. She couldn’t let the demigod absorb all the abyssals. If it grew any stronger, it would become unstoppable. Her microscopic form quivered as she focused her energy, her splits that were now floating in the black mist emanating off of the dissolving abyssals. She couldn’t control the abyssals anymore, but her splits were still present in the mist until they were absorbed and destroyed by the demigod.
With a surge of effort, Bea injected as much of her spiritual power into her splits as she could, causing them to self-detonate. Kain also used all of his means to channel as much spiritual power into her as possible and boost her abilities.
The force of their detonation wasn’t immense—her splits were too small to hold much energy and cause significant damage—but it was enough to destabilize the abyssal energy in the mist. The black mist churned and swirled violently, expanding and growing denser until, with a deafening boom, it exploded. The shockwave rippled across the battlefield, sending abyssals and combatants alike stumbling back. The ground trembled, and the air was filled with the horrible smell of burning abyssal flesh and blood.
The demigod roared in surprise. The explosion hadn’t harmed it—even if the blast had been a hundred times greater, it wouldn’t have been a threat—but the sudden disorientation disrupted its absorption process. For a brief moment, its oppressive aura wavered.
The City Lord and his contracts seized the opportunity. Ishvaran’s dragon unleashed an outburst of flame, the fire blazing brighter and hotter than ever before. The armored giant, though injured, surged forward with a roar, its massive fists slamming into the demigod’s form with earth-shaking force. The combined assault forced the demigod back, its momentarily enlarged form wavering under the onslaught.
Meanwhile, Bea’s energy was spent, her microscopic form trembling from the strain. She had bought them a chance, but the battle was far from over.
