Chapter 125: Secret Letter
Fu Shuying came back to her senses, quickly adjusted her expression, and showed a gentle but helpless smile.
She then lowered her eyes and said softly, with a hint of grievance in her voice, “Aunt, as long as I can stay with you, I am already satisfied. If you hadn’t taken me in, I don’t know what would have happened to me when my parents died.”
Looking at her niece’s sad face, Old Madam Xie was angry with her son again. She sighed and said, “Let’s not talk about this sad topic anymore. Let’s go in and prepare for the royal banquet tonight.”
Fu Shuying nodded obediently and helped Old Madam Xie into the house, followed by other female relatives and servants of the Xie family. While Old Madam Xie and the members of the Xie family were busy preparing for tonight’s banquet, Xie Yanghui had already bathed and changed clothes.
As soon as he entered the study, the housekeeper came over and said, “Lao Ye, a secret letter has just arrived from the north.”
Xie Yanghui took the small bamboo tube from the housekeeper and took out the small piece of paper. When he saw the secret letter, his eyes were full of disbelief, and the next second, they were filled with joy and excitement.
Seeing his master’s expression, the housekeeper asked curiously, “Lao Ye, did something good happen?”
Xie Yanghui put away the secret letter with trembling hands and fell into a daze. After a long silence, he looked at the housekeeper and said, “Lao Zhan, this secret letter from Uncle Jin may be the only clue that allows me to find my wife now.”
Hearing this, Zhan Wenmin opened his eyes wide in surprise and asked, “Did Jin Ronghang really find out Madam’s information?”
Xie Yanghui clenched his hands tightly and said, “He didn’t find her, but he saw a young lady who looked very similar to my wife. She may be related to Ling’er. If we can find this young lady, maybe we can find Ling’er.”
Zhan Wenmin’s eyes became red after hearing this. After eleven years of searching, the clue about his mistress was finally found. If he hadn’t gone out to buy sweet-scented osmanthus cake that day, Old Madam Xie wouldn’t have been able to chase her mistress out and force her to divorce his master. Recalling that day, Zhan Wenmin couldn’t help but feel guilty toward Xie Yanghui.
Seeing Zhan Wenmin’s eyes turn red and his guilty expression, Xie Yanghui said, “Don’t blame yourself. What happened back then was not your fault. Ever since I married Ling’er, that old woman has always forced us to get a divorce.”
He paused for a second, sighed, and then said in a low voice, “Even if you were able to foil her plans that day, you can’t foil her plans every time. As long as that old woman is still my mother in name, you can’t win against her. I shouldn’t have listened to her and taken her to the western border with me at all costs. It’s my fault for leaving Lin’er alone in this wolf’s den.”
As soon as these words came out, the master and servant fell into silence. Just when the atmosphere became solemn, the guard’s voice came from outside.
“Miss Fu, this is a forbidden area. No one can enter without the permission of the Supreme General. Please go back.”
Outside the study, Fu Shuying and her maidservant were stopped by two soldiers guarding the door. Fu Shuying glanced at the maidservant, who then hurriedly said, “This soup was made by Furen herself for Lao Ye. How dare you stand in her way to meet Lao Ye?”
Before the soldiers had time to answer the maidservant, the door suddenly opened from the inside. Fu Shuying quickly showed a gentle smile and raised her eyes, but what she saw was not Xie Yanghui but Zhan Wenmin.
“Why is it you? Where is Elder Brother Yanghui?” When she asked, her smile disappeared.
Zhan Wenmin walked out of the study, closed the door gently, and then looked at Fu Shuying coldly. He glanced at the bowl of soup on the tray and said to the maidservant, “Who do you call Furen?”
The maidservant trembled all over under Zhan Wenmin’s cold eyes and stammered in reply, “I– I–”
Before the maidservant could speak, Zhan Wenmin looked away from her.
He then looked at Fu Shuying and said, “Miss Fu, please educate your maidservant so as not to ruin your reputation. Lao Ye only has one wife and will not have a second one. As for Miss Fu, you are just a daughter of Lao Tai Tai’s second elder brother. The owner of this mansion is surnamed Xie, not Fu. If you understand this fact, please leave so as not to disturb Lao Ye’s good mood.”
After speaking, Zhan Wenmin glanced at the two soldiers. After receiving his signal, the two soldiers stepped forward and slightly drew their swords from the sheaths to intimidate Fu Shuying and her maidservant. Seeing the two soldiers openly threatening her, Fu Shuying’s face turned pale.
She clenched her handkerchief tightly, gritted her teeth, and said angrily, “Zhan Wenmin, just you wait! Since you embarrass me like this, I will ask my aunt to deal with you!”
After saying that, she turned around and furiously walked away, followed by the scared maidservant.
Zhan Wenmin looked at her back and said to the soldiers, “From today on, she is not allowed to walk around the mansion freely. If she tries to force her way into the outer courtyard, just kick her out. If Lao Tai Tai blames you, tell her I gave the order.”
The two soldiers clasped their fists and said, “Yes, Housekeeper Zhan.”
In the study, Xie Yanghui stood by the large round window, looking out at the beautiful garden. He stared at the garden and whispered, “Lin’er, where are you? It’s been seventeen years since you disappeared. Are you really not coming back?”
