Chapter 128: Why Do You Ask This?
Thinking of this, Fen Lan nodded at Duan Yixin and said, “Since Miss Duan has said so, then I will convey your words to my young lady.”
She thought for a while and then asked, “Miss Duan, when can I come and get the herbal tea on the order?”
Duan Yixin calculated the time it would take her to collect and dry the medicinal materials and replied, “It would take me three days to get the order ready because I need to collect and process the materials before I can use them to blend the herbal tea.”
Fen Lan nodded and said, “All right, I will let my lady know about this. It’s getting late now. Miss Duan, I will take my leave first.”
After Duan Yixin sent Fen Lan out, she returned to the woodshed. Before the servants from Chang Shou Pharmacy and Fen Lan arrived, Duan Yixin was recording the maturity cycles of Chinese cabbage and strawberries.
Walking into the woodshed, Duan Yixin picked up the memo and pen on the wooden table in the corner and then continued to record the changes in Chinese cabbage and strawberries. When she was done, she put the memo and pen back into the warehouse.
Since the Chinese cabbage and strawberries were ready to be harvested, Duan Yixin decided to harvest them all. She used a small shovel to gently dig the Chinese cabbage out of the soil and placed it on a wooden bucket.
After harvesting all the Chinese cabbages, Duan Yixin took an empty wooden bucket to harvest the strawberries. When she was done, she loosened the dirt in the wooden buckets used to plant Chinese cabbage. After that, she planted Chinese cabbage again in those wooden buckets.
Since strawberries can be harvested repeatedly, Duan Yixin only needed to loosen the soil and adjust the rate of water dripping speed. After she was done with the work, she took the two wooden buckets full of Chinese cabbage and strawberries to the well to clean.
Ten minutes later, Duan Yixin came to the kitchen carrying the wooden buckets. After placing the two wooden buckets on the ground, she got a hand-held bamboo basket and placed a clean cloth at the bottom of the basket.
When she wanted to put the Chinese cabbage in the bamboo basket, Duan Yixin found that the bamboo basket was too small. She thought for a few seconds, put the strawberries into the bamboo basket, and then wrapped the Chinese cabbage in a clean cloth.
Fortunately, Duan Yixin bought a few pieces of cloth when she went to Chun Shan Town for the first time. After she came back that day, she cut the cloth into smaller sizes and used it to wrap things or cover food. Otherwise, she would have nothing to wrap the Chinese cabbage today.
After she finished wrapping the Chinese cabbage, Duan Yixin put the remaining Chinese cabbage and strawberries into the warehouse. Carrying the bamboo basket and Chinese cabbage, she left the house and went to the Chi family’s house.
When she arrived at the Chi family’s house, Duan Yixin looked around and saw no one. She thought they might be in the house, so she called Chi Xinru, “Xinru, are you at home?”
Duan Yixin waited for a while and saw Chi Xiyou coming out of the house. Seeing her waiting outside, Chi Xiyou smiled and walked over to open the low gate for her.
He stepped aside and asked, “Xin Xin, are you here to see Ru’er?”
Duan Yixin walked in and nodded at him, “Yes. Is she at home, Elder Brother Xiyou?”
Chi Xiyou closed the door and answered, “You are too late. She just went out to the town with my parents. Do you need anything from her?”
Before Duan Yixin could answer, Chi Xiyou noticed the bamboo basket and big bundle in her hand and asked, “What did you bring?”
Duan Yixin entered the house and placed the bamboo basket and Chinese cabbage on the wooden table in the living room. She removed the cloth covering the strawberries and then opened the cloth wrapping the Chinese cabbage.
Chi Xiyou saw the strawberries and Chinese cabbage and asked, “Xin Xin, where did you buy them? Aren’t there no more strawberries on the market?”
Duan Yixin looked at his surprised expression and said, “I grew this myself. Since your family has helped me a lot, I bring some for you to try.”
Chi Xiyou picked up the Chinese cabbage, which weighed at least eight jin, and asked, “Did you really grow this yourself?”
Duan Yixin nodded and said, “Yes. The last time I went to town, the vegetable vendor said the weather was too hot, and a lot of vegetables had already dried up from lack of water. Since the vegetables were not fresh and very expensive, I decided to grow them myself.”
After listening to her explanation, Chi Xiyou put the Chinese cabbage on the table and said, “I never knew you had such a talent in farming. The Chinese cabbage you grew is at least three times larger than the ordinary Chinese cabbage sold in the market.”
After saying that, he picked up a strawberry and took a bite. When the strawberry juice filled his mouth, Chi Xiyou’s eyes widened in surprise, and he said, “This strawberry is delicious. It tastes very sweet and slightly sour. Moreover, the size is also very big.”
Duan Yixin listened to Chi Xiyou’s comments about Chinese cabbage and strawberries and remembered his words. When she returns, she will write them down in her report. Chi Xiyou finished the goose egg-sized strawberry in two mouthfuls while Duan Yixin kept nodding her head.
Just when he was about to pick the second strawberry, Chi Xiyou paused. He looked at Duan Yixin and suddenly asked, “Xin Xin, how many strawberries have you planted?”
“I have ten pots of strawberries now.” She replied without thinking.
Looking at Chi Xiyou’s thoughtful expression, she asked curiously, “Elder Brother Xiyou, why do you ask this?”
