Chapter 144: Go To The Farmland
After Duan Yixin left with the wooden bucket, Liushiliu continued cleaning the wild boar. Duan Yixin walked for more than twenty minutes before arriving at her farmland. When she arrived, she saw her workers busy clearing weeds from the farm.
Seeing her coming, the youngest worker stopped what he was doing and stood up. After wiping the sweat from his forehead with his sleeve, he walked up to her. Seeing the wooden bucket in Duan Yixin’s hand, he took it from her and said, “Miss Duan, good morning. Are you here to inspect the farm?”
Duan Yixin nodded and said, “Yes. I’m also here to deliver liquid fertilizer.”
After speaking, Duan Yixin looked at the boy and said, “It seems I don’t know your name yet.”
The boy smiled at her and said politely, “Miss Duan, my name is Ji Hongwei. I am fourteen years old this year.”
Duan Yixin looked at Ji Hongwei’s thin body, which looked even thinner than her own, and thought to herself, ‘I thought he was only ten years old. Surprisingly, he is actually already fourteen years old.’
Ji Hongwei noticed that Duan Yixin was staring at him and said hurriedly, “Miss Duan, although I am thinner than other people of the same age, I can assure you that I can do better than most adults.”
Duan Yixin was stunned when she heard him suddenly say that. Seeing her just staring at him, Ji Hongwei added anxiously, “Miss Duan, please don’t fire me. I really need this job. I still have grandparents and younger siblings at home that depend on my daily wage.”
Duan Yixin saw his eyes were red and said gently, “You misunderstood. I didn’t mean to fire you. You took good care of the farm, and I am very satisfied with the result.”
As soon as she said these words, Duan Yixin saw the anxiety and fear in Ji Hongwei’s eyes slowly disappear. Looking at the boy in front of her, Duan Yixin couldn’t help but sigh in her heart.
Regardless of the world, everything seems to be the same. It is difficult for children to survive without adults. What’s more, Ji Hongwei still needs to support his family alone.
After coming out of her thoughts, Duan Yixin said, “I want to mix this liquid fertilizer with water. Can you help me bring the water?”
The only source of water near her farmland is a river that flows down from the mountains. Since Duan Yixin just bought the land and did not have time to dig a well, the workers had to carry water from the river to irrigate the farm manually.
Ji Hongwei’s eyes lit up when he heard Duan Yixin’s request. He looked at the wooden bucket in his hand and asked, “Miss Duan, where do you want to put this wooden bucket?”
Duan Yixin pointed to the shed where the workers used to rest and said, “Can you move it there? I will wait for you there while you get the water.”
Ji Hongwei nodded and said, “Yes, Miss Duan.”
Seeing Ji Hongwei running into the shed, Duan Yixin also walked towards the shed. After placing the wooden bucket on the bench, Ji Hongwei took two empty buckets from the corner of the shed and went to fetch water.
Sitting on the bench, Duan Yixin roughly calculated the distance from her farmland to the river. After a simple calculation, she found that this area was at least fifty meters away from the river, while other areas of her farmland were located further from the river.
Just as Duan Yixin was drawing a map of the farmland and river in her mind, Ji Hongwei returned with two buckets of water. Seeing that she was deep in thought, Ji Hongwei did not dare disturb her. After pouring the water into the water tank under the shed, Ji Hongwei returned to the river to fetch more water.
Duan Yixin saw that it would take him a long time to fill the water tank, so she waited for Ji Hongwei to come back for the second time before asking, “Young Master Ji, how many buckets of water will it take to fill this water tank?”
When she called him ‘young master’, Ji Hongwei waved his hand and said shyly, “Miss Duan, you don’t have to call me young master. I am the second son of my family, so you can call me Ji Erlang, or you can just call me by my name.”
Duan Yixin looked at his shy and embarrassed look and said, “Then I will call you Hongwei. Since I am two years older than you, you can call me elder sister.”
Ji Hongwei nodded and answered her previous question, “Elder Sister Yixin, this water tank requires at least a hundred buckets of water to fill it up.”
Listening to his answer, Duan Yixin frowned slightly and asked, “Doesn’t it take a lot of effort and time to fill the tank? Is this how you usually irrigate the fields?”
Ji Hongwei nodded and said, “Yes. Most farmers will fetch water and irrigate their farms manually. Although this work is tiring, we must do it. Otherwise, the plants will wither.”
Listening to Ji Hongwei’s explanation, Duan Yixin thought for a while and asked, “Hongwei, can you help me call the other workers?”
Ji Hongwei was curious about what she wanted to do, but he didn’t ask and just said, “Yes, Elder Sister Yixin.”
After Ji Hongwei left to call other workers, Duan Yixin picked up a thin branch from the ground and squatted down. When Ji Hongwei came back with the workers, he saw her drawing something on the ground with a thin branch.
He walked up to her and said, “Elder Sister Yixin, the workers are all here.”
Duan Yixin stood up, looked at them, and said, “Good morning, everyone. I have some work that I need your help.”

The oldest worker smiled and said, “Miss Duan, just tell us what to do, and we will do it for you.”
