Chapter 166: Feel Guilty
After making the decision, Liushiliu activated his lightness skill and disappeared. In the second wooden building, Chi Junheng, Chi Xiyou, and Chi Xinru were all awake. Before Liang Jiaying and the group of assassins arrived, the three of them had already woken up because of the ripples of auras in the air.
Not knowing the visitors’ intentions, Chi Junheng decided to observe the situation first. However, he never expected that those who came would turn out to be assassins, and those they wanted to kill were Duan Yixin and Chi Xinru.
Fortunately, someone intervened and drove the assassins away before they were forced to fight the assassins. When none of the three people felt any auras from the outside, Chi Xiyou breathed a sigh of relief.
In order not to wake up his mother and Duan Yixin, he speaks in a low voice, “I never expected that someone would send assassins to kill Xin Xin and Ru’er. I wonder who ordered the assassination. If the person behind this assassination is found out, I will make that person pay a heavy price!”
Chi Xinru heard her elder brother’s words and sneered, “I recognized that woman’s voice. She is Liang Jiaying, who seduced Tang Zizheng and caused Tang Zizheng to break his marriage engagement with Xin Xin.”
After she said this, Chi Junheng fell into deep thought. A few seconds later, he said, “It seems that their target is Xin Xin. Suppose the person behind this assassination is really Liang Jiaying. In that case, everything makes sense because the reason why she sent assassins to kill Xin Xin may be related to Tang Zizheng.”
Chi Xinru and Chi Xiyou felt their hands itchy when they thought of the bad things Liang Jiaying had done to Duan Yixin in the past. If Liang Jiaying stood in front of the siblings, they would beat her mercilessly.
After a moment of silence, Chi Xinru clenched her hands and sneered, “She’d better not let me see her again. Otherwise, I will tear her to pieces with my bare hands!”
As soon as these words came out, Duan Yixin moved slightly in her sleep. Chi Xiyou quickly covered his younger sister’s mouth and whispered, “Shh! Keep your voice down!”
Chi Xinru glanced at her mother and Duan Yixin, then at her elder brother, and nodded. Seeing that she finally calmed down, Chi Xiyou let her go. Then he looked at his father and asked, “Father, should we tell that person about this assassination attempt?”
When Chi Xiyou asked this question, Chi Junheng’s eyes flickered. He was silent for a moment before shaking his head, “No. After so many years, he is the only person who knows my mission. The current political situation in the imperial court is unstable, so we should not contact that person to avoid revealing ourselves. Let’s observe the situation first and then decide how to handle it later.”
Chi Xiyou sighed, looked at Duan Yixin, and muttered in frustration, “I don’t know when I can tell Xin Xin everything. Hiding these secrets from her really makes me feel guilty.”
After he said that, Chi Xinru smiled bitterly and said, “I just hope Xin Xin won’t ignore us after knowing everything. I really don’t want to lose my best friend because of Father’s mission.”
Chi Junheng looked at his two children’s gloomy expressions and fell into deep thought. While the three of them were occupied by their own thoughts, time passed slowly. A few hours later, the sky gradually changed color.
When Duan Yixin finally woke up, Madam Chi had already woke up and prepared breakfast. In order to save supplies, she cooked porridge instead of steaming rice. She placed a pot of porridge on top of the small brazier and then placed a steamer on top of the pot to heat some steamed buns.
Seeing Duan Yixin sitting up and rubbing her eyes in a daze, Madam Chi smiled and said, “Xin Xin, you are awake. Go freshen up, and let’s have breakfast together.”
After Madam Chi said this, she continued to prepare breakfast. Duan Yixin opened her eyes and found that she and Madam Chi were the only ones there.
She looked at Madam Chi and said, “Good morning, Aunt Wang. Where are Uncle Chi, Elder Brother Xiyou, and Xinru?”
Madam Chi pointed to the wall on the right and said, “Dalang said he wanted to teach them how to grow plants indoors, and he brought your Uncle Chi and Ru’er with him before you woke up. They should be back soon.”
“I understand. Then I will go wash up first and go take a look.” Duan Yixin stood up from the ground as she spoke.
Madam Chi nodded and said, “All right.”
After Duan Yixin opened the door of the wooden building, the cold morning breeze blew in. Standing on the door, she hugged herself and shivered in the cold. She looked at the gloomy sky for a while, then took the wooden bucket placed near the door.
She held the wooden bucket and filled it with rainwater. Before long, the wooden bucket was full. Duan Yixin put the wooden bucket on the ground and washed her face with cold rainwater.
Seeing that Madam Chi was busy inside, Duan Yixin turned around and took out a small cotton towel from the warehouse. She dried her face and hands and then returned the small cotton towel to the warehouse. Duan Yixin then poured the dirty water on the ground and put the wooden bucket back.
She stood up, went to get her straw raincoat, and said to Madam Chi, “Aunt Wang, I will be back in a moment.”
Madam Chi looked at her and said, “Mhm, be careful when walking. The ground was slippery.”
“Yes, Aunt Wang.” Duan Yixin replied with a smile.
Before leaving, she took her oil-paper umbrella with her. She held the umbrella and walked towards the first wooden building. Before she arrived, she had already heard Chi Xinru’s questioning voice.
“Can we really use this method to grow plants indoors?” Chi Xinru asked in doubt.
