Chapter 167: Picking Strawberries
Chi Xiyou pointed to the half-eaten strawberry between Chi Xinru’s fingers and said, “You have eaten the strawberries. Are you still doubting whether we can grow them indoors or not?”
Before Chi Xinru could answer the question, Chi Junheng heard Duan Yixin’s footsteps approaching. He turned to look at the door and saw her coming.
Duan Yixin placed the umbrella against the wall and shook off the water on her raincoat. When she walked into the wooden building, Chi Junheng said, “You are here, Xin Xin.”
She nodded and said with a smile, “Good morning, Uncle Chi. Aunt Wang said breakfast will be ready soon.”
After she said this, Chi Xiyou touched his belly and said, “Great. I’m so hungry that I can eat a whole chicken.”
As soon as he said this, Chi Xinru said as she swallowed the remaining strawberries, “I suspect you don’t have a stomach but a bottomless pit.”
Chi Xiyou looked at his younger sister and said, “Of course you are not hungry. Do you know how many strawberries you have eaten since we came here?”
Hearing this, Chi Xinru’s hand, which was about to pick strawberries, paused. She coughed in embarrassment, turned to look at Duan Yixin, and said, “We shouldn’t let Mother wait for us.”
Chi Xiyou rolled his eyes when he saw his younger sister put on her straw raincoat and left in a hurry. After Chi Xinru left, Chi Junheng looked at his son and Duan Yixin and said, “Return when you are done here.”
Chi Xiyou nodded and said, “Yes, Father.”
After Chi Junheng left, Chi Xiyou looked at Duan Yixin in embarrassment. He scratched his head and asked, “Xin Xin, do you have any plans to sell your strawberries?”
When Duan Yixin heard this question, she knew what he wanted to say. She smiled and said, “Elder Brother Xiyou, I won’t take your money. Xinru can eat as many strawberries as she wants.”
After being exposed by her, Chi Xiyou grinned and said sheepishly, “Then I will thank you on Ru’er’s behalf.”
Duan Yixin nodded, looked at the plump red strawberries, and said, “Let’s pick some strawberries and bring them back to Aunt Wang and Uncle Chi to try.”
Chi Xiyou was delighted when he heard this and said quickly, “Let me do it.”
Seeing that he had already started picking strawberries, Duan Yixin went to check the wooden barrels on top of the shelves. She took the wooden buckets down and found that there was only a little water left.
Putting the wooden buckets back on the shelves, she said to Chi Xiyou, “Elder Brother Xiyou, I’m going to get some water and fill the wooden buckets.”
Chi Xiyou raised his eyes to look at her and asked, “Do you need me to help you carry water?”
Duan Yixin shook her head, “No need.”
“All right. Then be careful when you walk. The ground is slippery.” He said, continuing to pick strawberries.
Hearing the same reminder from him and Madam Chi, Duan Yixin couldn’t help but think, ‘They are indeed mother and son. Even the way they reminded people was the same.’
Coming out of the second wooden building, Duan Yixin put on her straw raincoat and held the oil-paper umbrella. She needed to get the nutrient solution and water from the warehouse, so she went to the third wooden building.
Entering the third wooden building, Duan Yixin closed the door and removed a wooden bucket from the warehouse. She placed the clean bucket on the floor and then took out two large wooden barrels containing water and nutrient solution from the warehouse.
Afraid of someone suddenly opening the door, Duan Yixin quickly filled the clean wooden bucket with water. Then, she mixes the nutrient solution into the water. After doing that, she quickly put the two large wooden barrels back into the warehouse.
Holding the wooden bucket in her right hand and holding an oil-paper umbrella in her left hand, Duan Yixin returned to the first wooden building. When she came back, Chi Xiyou was still picking strawberries. Seeing that he had filled a wooden bucket with strawberries, Duan Yixin raised her eyebrows slightly in surprise.
As far as she remembers, the first time she picked strawberries, she only harvested one bucket. But this time, Chi Xiyou actually gained more than one bucket. Even the second bucket is almost full, and there are still a lot of strawberries left.
When she refilled the wooden buckets on top of the shelves with the mixed water, Duan Yixin thought, ‘I remember I just harvested the strawberries two days ago. According to the data, the next harvest should be five days later.’
She looked with interest at the strawberries hanging on the vines and fell into deep thoughts, ‘Are there any external factors that cause plants to mature prematurely? I really can’t find an answer to these oddities. Everything looked chaotic yet strangely orderly. If I could find the rules, I might be able to create new plant varieties.’
While she was lost in thought, Chi Xiyou had already finished picking all the ripe strawberries. He thoughtfully looked at the four wooden buckets filled with strawberries larger than duck eggs and touched his chin. A few seconds later, Chi Xiyou picked up a strawberry and looked at it for a long time.
After a long silence, Chi Xiyou raised his eyes to look at Duan Yixin and saw that she was deep in thought. He frowned slightly and asked doubtfully, “Xin Xin, don’t you think this strawberry is bigger than the one you gave me before?”

After hearing his question, Duan Yixin came back from her thoughts. After placing the empty bucket on the ground, she walked up to Chi Xiyou. She picked up a strawberry from one of the wooden buckets filled with strawberries and looked at it carefully.
After a moment of silence, Duan Yixin said, “Elder Brother Xiyou, I think you are right. This strawberry is indeed bigger than the ones I picked before.”
