Chapter 23: Childhood Memories
Without the headache caused by the sudden surge of memories, Duan Yixin watched the video and image calmly.
After watching the short video of the original owner’s memories when she was a child, Duan Yixin discovered that the relationship between Grandpa Duan and the villagers was different from what she had imagined before.
The villagers of Yunshan Village and other neighboring villages do not have a normal neighbor relationship with Grandpa Duan but respect him very much, almost to the extent of worshiping him.
Judging from the pieces of memories of the original owner, Duan Yixin is convinced that Grandpa Duan is a person with a deep background. It’s just that she doesn’t understand why a person with a deep background and superb skills in the medical field would come to live in this remote place.
Seeing that she was just staring at the noodles in a daze, Chi Xiyou asked, “Xin Xin, are you alright?”
Duan Yixin woke up from her thoughts, looked at him, and said, “I just remember some of my childhood memories.”
When she finished speaking, everyone was stunned. Chi Xinru was shocked and thought, ‘Does she still remember her childhood memories? Then she is really Xin Xin and not someone who looks like her?’
After thinking about it, Chi Xinru asked carefully, “Xin Xin, what do you remember?”
Duan Yixin chose from the fragmented memory of the original owner and said, “I remember Madam Chi cooked a table of delicious dishes for me to celebrate my fifth birthday and also prepared a bowl of egg noodles for me. That year, my grandparents gave me a small wooden box that contained the marriage contract between Tang Zizheng and me.”
Hearing this, Chi Xinru looked at Duan Yixin with complicated eyes while the rest of the Chi family smiled, happy that Duan Yixin had finally recovered some of her memories.
Madam Chi was happy for her and said, “It’s great that you have finally recovered some of your memories. Maybe you can recover faster after you go to places you have been before or do things you often do.”
Thinking that a bowl of plain noodles could evoke some important memories about the past of the original owner, Duan Yixin nodded and said, “Madam is right. When I have time, I will try to trace the past.”
Seeing that she was obedient, Madam Chi couldn’t help but smile and said, “Good child. Hurry up and finish your noodles while it is hot.”
When they were eating, Chi Xinru lowered her eyes and ate in silence. Chi Xiyou, who was sitting next to her, looked at his younger sister thoughtfully. After dinner, Chi Xinru and Duan Yixin helped Madam Chi wash the dishes before going to bed.
Lying on the small bamboo bed, Chi Xinru turned to look at Duan Yixin, who was lying next to her, “Xin Xin, I don’t care if you can recover your memory or not. To me, you in the past and you now are my friends.”
Listening to her words, Duan Yixin felt that there was a hidden meaning in them. She turned to look at Chi Xinru and found that Chi Xinru’s eyes were calm. The way Chi Xinru looked at her, it was as if Chi Xinru knew that she was not the original owner but a different person.
The two looked at each other in silence as Duan Yixin thought to herself, ‘Does she know that I am not the Duan Yixin of this world? How much does she know about me?’
After a long silence, Chi Xinru smiled, turned around, closed her eyes, and said, “Go to sleep. It was a long day for everyone.”
Not long after, Duan Yixin heard Chi Xinru’s low and even breathing. After staring at the low ceiling for a long time, Duan Yixin closed her eyes and slowly fell asleep. That night, she didn’t dream about her and Captain Yu’s death in her previous life.
Early the next morning, Chi Junheng got up and went to the village chief’s house. When he arrived, there were already many villagers there. After finding an empty chair, he sat down and waited for the village chief to return from Chunshan Town.
As soon as he sat down, Tang Zizheng saw him and walked towards him. After breaking off his marriage engagement with Duan Yixin in public, Chi Junheng no longer had a good impression of Tang Zizheng. Seeing the young man approaching him, Chi Junheng looked away coldly.
Tang Zizheng stopped immediately when he saw the trace of enmity on Chi Junheng’s face. He stood there, clenching his hands tightly and lowering his head. When Tang Zizheng saw Chi Junheng’s attitude towards him, he knew that the chance of him and Duan Yixin repairing their marriage engagement was almost zero.
He refused to give up and walked towards Chi Junheng with a straight face. He stood in front of Chi Junheng and said, “Good morning, Uncle Chi. I heard that Xin Xin stayed at your house last night. Is she alright?”
Chi Junheng noticed the concern and worry in Tan Zizheng’s voice and looked at him.
AA good ex-fiancé behaves as if he is dead and will not shamelessly pester his ex-fiancée. Tang Erlang, I hope you can behave like a good ex-fiancé.”
Tang Zizheng turned pale when he heard Chi Junheng’s words. He clenched his hands tighter, and the pain helped him calm down. After a moment of silence, he said, “Uncle Chi, I just want to know if she is alright or not.”
Chi Junheng snorted and said, “Tang Erlang, it has nothing to do with you whether Xin Xin is living well or not. We will care for her, and I hope you know your place. Considering how good she’s been to you over the years, you should at least stay away from her after ruining her future.”
