Chapter 24: Visiting Chunshan Town (1)
After Chi Junheng finished speaking, he stopped paying attention to Tang Zizheng. Seeing the curious looks of the villagers, Tang Zizheng could only give up for now. He clasped his hands together, bowed slightly to Chi Junheng, and said, “Uncle Chi, I will come and visit you another day.”
After leaving these words, he turned and left. Chi Junheng looked at his dejected back and thought, ‘If you will regret your decision, why did you break off the engagement in public? Unfortunately, there is no regret medicine in this world. Tang Erlang, you reap what you sow.’
Two hours later, when the sun rose from the eastern horizon, a horse carriage stopped in front of Tang Sanniu’s house. After seeing the horse carriage, the villagers couldn’t hide their curiosity and stretched their necks to take a closer look.
Soon, the coachman came down and put a low stool next to the horse carriage. He stood aside and said, “Da Ren, we have arrived.”
Just a few seconds after he finished speaking, someone opened the carriage curtain. A man in his early forties came out and looked at the curious villagers. After scanning everyone with his calm eyes, he stepped down from the horse carriage.
When he stepped on the ground, Tang Sanniu came out of the horse carriage. The villagers were envious when they saw their village chief riding a horse carriage back with a man wearing nice clothes. The man looked at their expressions but said nothing.
He looked at Tang Sanniu and asked, “Village chief, where are those criminals?”
Tang Sanniu made an inviting gesture and said, “They are tied up in the center of our village. Please come this way, Da Ren.”
Seeing Tang Sanniu leaving with the man and a few Yamen runners, the villagers quickly followed. After walking for more than ten minutes, they arrived at the center of the village.
Looking at the three young men in their twenties tied to pillars in the field, the man asked, “Are they the criminals?”
Tang Sanniu nodded and said, “Yes, Da Ren. These three are the gangsters who broke into the villager’s house and wanted to kidnap her. There was another man, but he ran away, and we couldn’t find him.”
In order to protect Duan Yixin’s reputation, Tang Sanniu personally sent gifts to the local county magistrate early in the morning and asked him not to mention Duan Yixin’s name. Because of the generous gift, the local magistrate agreed and sent his assistant to supervise the case.
The assistant of the local magistrate looked at the three gangsters and said, “Since they have been caught in action and there are many people who can be witnesses, let’s bring them directly to the jail. The local magistrate will personally judge them in public later.”
After speaking, the assistant ordered the Yamen runners to tie up the criminals. Tang Sanniu and the villagers watched as the Yamen runners put the three gangsters into iron locks and dragged them to the horse carriage.
Since there were no casualties in this incident, there was no need to investigate Duan Yixin’s house. The assistant looked at Tang Sanniu and said, “Village Chief, we will send someone to notify you when we hold the trial.”
Tang Sanniu cupped his fists and said, “Then I’d like to thank Da Ren in advance. Thank you for your help.”
The assistant nodded to him and left with his men. Seeing that the horse carriage had left their village, Chi Junheng walked up to Tang Sanniu and asked, “Village chief, why don’t the government interrogate them?”
Tang Sanniu lowered his voice and said, “The local magistrate said that since they were caught in action, there is no need for interrogation. He assured me that these three gangsters would not be able to leave the prison for at least ten years. Besides, it would not be good for Xin Niang’s reputation if they interrogate the gangsters in public.”
Hearing what he said, Chi Junheng raised his eyebrows but said nothing. The villagers didn’t know that Tang Sanniu had served as a soldier when he was young, but Chi Junheng did. Therefore, it was not difficult for Tang Sanniu to do something regarding the punishment of the gangsters.
In the past, when he almost died on the northern border, it was Grandpa Duan who snatched his life back from the hands of the King of Hell. Because of this life-saving grace, Tang Sanniu promised Grandpa Duan that he would protect Duan Yixin for the rest of his life.
It’s a pity that Tang Zizheng broke the marriage engagement, and Tang Sanniu failed to fulfill his promise to Grandpa Duan. Therefore, he could only repay Grandpa Duan by protecting his granddaughter as the village chief.
After talking about the gangsters’ matter, Chi Junheng asked, “Village chief, what are you going to do about Duan Sida and the Duan family?”
Tang Sanniu calmly said, “The local magistrate has dispatched the Yamen runners to catch him. It shouldn’t be long before they catch him. As for the Duan family and Duan Sizhi, we still need to wait for the results of the investigation to know how they will be punished.”
While the two were discussing what to do with Duan Sida’s family, Duan Yixin had already returned to her home accompanied by Chi Xinru and Chi Xiyou. Looking at the messy courtyard, Duan Yixin let out a long sigh.
Chi Xiyou patted her head gently and said, “Xin Xin, I’m going to the town to sell the pheasants and rabbits I caught yesterday. Do you want to go with me and Ru’er?”
Duan Yixin felt better when she thought about making money. She looked at Chi Xiyou and said, “Yes, but I need to see if those medicinal herbs have been destroyed or not before we leave.”
Chi Xiyou nodded to her and said, “All right. Then we will wait for you here.”
After saying that, he put down the bamboo basket containing the rabbits and pheasants and began to clean up the front yard with his younger sister.
