Chapter 256: Buying Medicinal Materials (1)
The leader shook his head and said, “I don’t know. But if General Zhan comes to see her in person, she must be an important person.”
After speaking, the leader took back the letter from the soldier’s hand. He put away the letter and said, “Stop asking questions and stay alert. We can’t let anything happen to the target before General Zhan meets her.”
The other soldiers nodded and said in unison, “Yes, Brother.”
While the soldiers were guarding their target, Xuan Ruiquan and others had already arrived at the back door of the Chang Shou Pharmacy. When the servant guarding the door saw Xuan Ruiquan coming again, he quickly stepped forward to greet him. However, before he could speak, he saw Xuan Ruiquan’s hand signals.
The servant was confused when he saw the signals, but he still followed the order and did not greet Xuan Ruiquan as he usually did.
The servant clasped his hands together and said politely, “Welcome, Guest. How can I help you?”
Duan Yixin and the Chi siblings were surprised when they heard the servant’s polite greeting. Normally, the servant would shoo them away or ask them to come in through the front door. But this servant did not do that but greeted them politely instead.
“I want to see the shopkeeper.” Xuan Ruiquan said before anyone else could react.
The servant doesn’t know what his Master wants to do, but he should do the right thing by following his Master’s order.
He smiled, opened the door, and made an inviting gesture, “Guest, please come in.”
After the servant finished speaking, Xuan Ruiquan held Duan Yixin’s hand and said, “Let’s go.”
Seeing his Master holding a young lady’s hand intimately, the servant blinked a few times, doubting his eyes. He watched in shock as they walked away and rubbed his eyes a few more times. After a few seconds, he came to his senses and quickly closed the door.
When he turned around, Xuan Ruiquan and others had disappeared from his sight. The servant scratched his head and thought, ‘Just now, Master is pretending to be a guest. Should I chase him to lead the way or not?’
While the servant was still deciding whether to follow them or not, Xuan Ruiquan and others were already halfway to the side hall.
Along the way, she discovered that the servants here seemed to know Xuan Ruiquan. From the moment they walked through the back door until now, every servant they met bowed to Xuan Ruiquan and greeted him politely.
Duan Yixin saw that he was very familiar with the place and asked curiously, “General Xuan, do you come here often?”
Xuan Ruiquan nodded, “I come here at least twice a year.”
He wasn’t lying because he had actually been here a few times before.
Thinking that he might be here to buy medicinal materials for the soldiers on the northern border, Duan Yixin didn’t ask any more questions. Not long after, they arrived at the side hall.
Xuan Ruiquan looked at one of the servants and ordered, “Go and call Tan Hangyu.”
The servant bowed and said, “Yes, Mas–”
Seeing Xuan Ruiquan staring at him, the servant felt a chill down his spine and quickly changed his words, “Yes, Guest. Please wait a moment. I will call Shopkeeper Tan immediately.”
After saying that, the servant hurriedly left while other servants prepared tea and refreshments for them. In the study, Tan Hangyu had just finished counting last month’s income and closed the account book when someone knocked on the door.
Knock, knock, knock.
Tan Hangyu put the account books into a box, locked it, and said, “Come in.”
Seeing the servant coming in a hurry, he frowned slightly and asked, “What’s the matter?”
The servant adjusted his breathing before saying, “Shopkeeper Tan, Master is waiting for you in the side hall.”
Hearing this, Tan Hangyu stood up and walked out while asking, “Why didn’t you take Master to the main courtyard?”
The servant followed Tan Hangyu and replied, “Master is here with two young ladies and a young master. It seems that they don’t know Master’s identity, and Master doesn’t want them to know that he is our Master.”
Hearing this, Tan Hangyu stopped on his track. He turned to look at the servant and asked, “Master brought others here and hid his identity as the owner of Chang Shou Pharmacy?”

The servant nodded in answer, and Tan Hangyu thought while rubbing the jade ring on his thumb. After a few seconds, he said, “Go and take the inventory list to the study.”
The servant clasped his fists and said, “Yes, Shopkeeper Tan.”
After receiving the order, the servant hurried to get the inventory list while Tan Hangyu rushed to the side hall. A few minutes later, he arrived in front of the side hall. Before walking in, Tan Hangyu took a few deep breaths to slow down his breathing, straightened his clothes, and then walked in calmly. As soon as he walked in, he almost slipped and fell head-on.
Tan Hangyu blinked a few times as he watched his Master serve a young lady with a smile on his lips. Seeing Xuan Ruiquan’s gentleness when pouring tea and serving pastries for Duan Yixin, Tan Hangyu almost went out to check if he was in the wrong place.
Fortunately, Duan Yixin saw him before he actually went out to check. Looking at his face, she opened her eyes wide in surprise and asked, “Shopkeeper Tan, why are you here? Have you moved your store from Chun Shan Town to Hua Shan Town?”
Tan Hangyu thought about it and realized that Duan Yixin had admitted the wrong person. He walked up to her and smiled, “Young Lady, you have recognized the wrong person.”
Duan Yixin tilted her head slightly and asked doubtfully, “Aren’t you Shopkeeper Tan?”
While Duan Yixin was staring at him, Tan Hangyu walked to the main seat. He hesitated for a moment before sitting down. Then he looked at Duan Yixin and smiled politely, “People also call me Shopkeeper Tan.”
