The captain moved closer to the carriage and said, “General Zhen, in front is Hua Shan Town.”

Zhan Wenmin opened the curtains and took a look at the people coming and going in Hua Shan Town. Looking at their listless faces and dirty clothes, Zhan Wenmin knew that these people should be refugees.

After observing them for a moment, he said, “Go to the most luxurious inn.”

The captain nodded, “Yes, General.”

After the captain gave the order, the coachman flicked his riding crop, and Zhan Wenmin lowered the curtain. Before they could drive past the city gate, two soldiers stopped them.

Seeing this, the captain asked, “Sir, do you need anything?”

The soldiers looked at their clothes and the carts filled with boxes behind the horse carriage and said, “I’ve never seen you. Who are you, and what are you doing here?”

The captain took out his travel permit and handed it to the soldier.

“We are businessmen from the imperial capital city. My Master heard that there was a plague in this area, so he brought some things to sell to relieve the pressure on the government.”

When the soldiers heard that they were merchants from the imperial capital city, the soldiers’ eyes lit up. Since two months ago, no merchants have appeared in the northern region. Without merchants, there would be no goods, and people would not be able to obtain food or daily necessities.

With a smile on his face, the soldier handed the travel permit back without looking at it and said, “Welcome to our Hua Shan Town. You may enter.”

The captain took the travel permit and said, “Thank you, Sir.”

The soldier signaled to the other soldier and said, “Let them pass.”

After the soldiers opened the larger gate for them, the captain said to the others, “Let’s go.”

Twenty minutes later, they stopped in front of the most luxurious inn in town. A servant saw them and hurried out to greet them.

“Guest, welcome to our inn. Do you want to stay overnight or just have a meal?” The servant asked with a smile.

The captain approached the carriage and asked in a low voice, “General Zhan, do you want to stay here?”

Zhan Wenmin thought for a while and said, “Let’s rest here first. We will decide after I meet the young lady.”

The captain nodded and turned to look at the servant.

“We will stay for a few days. Please prepare the best room for my Master.”

Hearing this, the servant’s eyes lit up. He smiled wider and said, “Yes, guest. Please come this way.”

Zhan Wenmin got off the carriage and followed the servant to the room on the third floor. As he walked up the stairs, he passed a young woman. When his eyes fell on the young woman’s face, Zhan Wenmin paused on his track.

He stared at the young woman and thought, ‘She looks familiar.’

When the servant saw him standing on the stairs, he reminded him, “Guest, please come this way.”

Zhan Wenmin looked away from that young woman and followed the servant to his room. Before walking in, Zhan Wenmin said, “Please prepare water. I want to clean it up.”

“Yes, Guest.”

After the servant left, Zhan Wenmin checked the room and found nothing suspicious inside. Not long after, the servant came back with bath water. Zhan Wenmin took a bath and went out with the soldiers.

After leaving the inn, Zhan Wenmin told the captain, “Take the goods to the county magistrate’s office. Let them know that we are willing to sell them at normal prices.”

The captain clasped his fists and said, “Yes, General.”

After the captain brought some soldiers with him to do the task, Zhan Wenmin looked up at the inn’s roof. The soldiers hiding on the roof nodded and disappeared. Seeing this, Zhan Wenmin wandered the streets with the remaining soldiers to investigate the situation.

When the sun disappeared onto the western horizon, Zhan Wenmin and others returned to the inn. The servant saw him coming and asked tentatively, “Guest, do you want to have your dinner in the main hall in your room?”

The servant smiled and said, “Yes, guest.”
