Being Followed
After leaving Chang Shou Pharmacy, Duan Yixin walked to the market carrying an empty bamboo basket on her back. Along the way, she visited several stores and bought daily necessities such as clothes, condiments, vegetables, meat, and grain.
Watching her negotiations with the shopkeepers from those stores, Jian Yi couldn’t help but wonder how an ordinary young woman like her could have such high negotiation skills and be so good at guessing other people’s thoughts. As Jian Yi becomes more and more interested in her, Duan Yixin wins another negotiation.
She smiled at the store owner and paid the money. Putting the vegetables into the bamboo basket, Duan Yixin asked, “Madam, do you know where I can buy seeds?”
The store owner was delighted to be called Madam by her and said, “Young Lady, it’s too late to start sowing now. If you want to start planting, you will need to wait until next spring.”
Duan Yixin shook her head and said, “I don’t have any land. I just want to grow some vegetables to save money.”
Hearing this, the store owner looked at her patched clothes and said with a hint of pity in her voice, “You can go to the Lin family’s store two streets away from here. They sell high-quality seeds at lower prices. Just tell them that it’s me who tells you about their store.”
Knowing that the store owner would get some kind of benefit from the Lin family by telling her about their store, Duan Yixin just nodded and thanked her. Although it is just a matter of opening her mouth, it might bring good benefits to the store owner in the future. Doing this small thing can also be counted as her way of repaying the store owner for giving her this information.
After leaving the vegetable store, Duan Yixin followed the directions the vegetable store owner gave her and walked to the Lin family’s store. On the way, she looked up at the bright sky and realized that it was already past lunchtime.
Feeling hungry, Duan Yixin looked at the wonton stand on the roadside. Seeing that few customers were eating there, she walked to the wonton stall.
When she sat down at an empty seat, the stall owner came over and asked, “What would you like to eat, Young Lady?”
Duan Yixin placed the heavy bamboo basket next to her chair, looked at the stall owner, and said, “Uncle, bring me a bowl of meat and vegetable wontons. Thank you.”
The stall owner nodded and said, “All right. Please wait a moment. It will be ready in a minute.”
After saying that, the stall owner went to prepare the order. While waiting, Duan Yixin poured herself a glass of water and observed the passersby. Just by looking at their clothes, Duan Yixin could guess that the economic disparity in this world was wider than in her original world.
She put her arms on the table, supported her chin with her hands, and thought, ‘If I wanted to make more money, I should sell medicines instead of selling raw materials. I also need to create products that target wealthy people. In this way, I can make more money with less product.’
While she was deep in thought, a shadow fell on her. After coming back from her thoughts, she raised her head and saw a handsome young man in his early twenties sitting down calmly in front of her.
Duan Yixin was very suspicious of him because he sat with her when there were still many empty seats. She stared at him for a few seconds and then said, “Young Master, there are still many empty seats. It’s not appropriate for us to sit at the same table.”
Jian Yi put his sword on the table and said calmly, “There are no more empty seats.”
Hearing this, Duan Yixin looked around, and sure enough, only her table had an empty seat. She tilted her head slightly and thought, ‘This wanton business is not bad. So many empty seats were actually filled in just a few minutes.’
What she didn’t know was that after most people had lunch at home, they would go out to eat some street food or snacks. Therefore, the business of wonton stalls only becomes lively after lunch. Moreover, Jian Yi waited until there were not many empty seats left before approaching her so he could sit at the same table with her.
Duan Yixin thought she had misunderstood the man in front of her and said, “I’m sorry, Young Master. I didn’t expect the seats to be full in just a few minutes.”
Jian Yi observed her for a while, nodded, and poured himself a glass of water. Seeing that he didn’t take her words to heart, Duan Yixin continued to observe the passersby and the street stalls. Soon, the stall owner brought her wontons over.
He placed the bowl of wontons in front of Duan Yixin and said, “Young Lady, please enjoy your meal.”
He then turned to look at Jian Yi and asked, “Young Master, do you want to place an order?”
Jian Yi glanced at Duan Yixin’s wontons and said, “The same as hers.”
The stall owner smiled and said, “All right. The wonton will be ready in a moment.”
After the stall owner left, Jian Yi sat there and observed Duan Yixin. Seeing her eating so deliciously, he suddenly felt hungry.
Not long after, the stall owner put a bowl of wontons in front of him and said, “This is your wonton, Young Master. Please enjoy the meal.”
Jian Yi nodded, said nothing, and started eating. After Duan Yixin finished eating the wontons, she took out two copper coins from her sleeve pocket and placed them on the table.
Carrying a bamboo basket on her back, she looked at the stall owner and said, “Uncle, the money is on the table.”
The stall owner smiled and said, “Thank you for your patronage, Young Lady. Please come again.”
