Buying Seeds
After eating a bowl of wontons, Duan Yixin felt that the pain in her stomach caused by hunger had eased a lot. Before leaving the wanton stall, she had secretly moved most of the items in the bamboo basket into the warehouse.
Duan Yixin carried the bamboo basket and walked toward the Lin family’s store, with Jian Yi following closely behind her. A few minutes later, she saw the Lin family’s store in the distance.
When she walked to the door of the store, a boy who looked about eight years old came over and said, “Welcome to the Lin family’s seed store. Elder Sister, is there anything I can help you with?”
Duan Yixin looked at the boy and said, “The owner of a nearby vegetable store told me about this store. She said the seeds sold in your store are of good quality and cheap.”
The boy listened to her words, smiled, and said, “What she said was true. Our store has the largest range of seeds at low prices. Elder Sister, what kind of seeds are you looking for? We have many varieties of seeds, and I can assure you that they have just arrived and are in good condition.”
Duan Yixin looked around the store and found that there were only a few kinds of seeds on display. But judging from the boy’s confident words, this store should have the largest variety of seeds in Chunshan Town.
Based on this piece of information, Duan Yixin can conclude that there are only a few types of seeds currently sold in the market and that there are still many seeds out there that have yet to be discovered.
She thought for a moment and said, “Please give me a bag of Chinese cabbage seeds.”
The boy smiled and said, “All right. Please wait a moment. I will pack the seeds for you.”
After saying that, the boy went to pack the seed for her while Duan Yixin looked at the other seeds. While the boy was weighing the seeds, Duan Yixin pointed to a few small bags of seeds in the corner of the store and said, “Little Brother, I want to buy those seeds, too.”
The boy heard her words and followed her gaze. When he saw the seeds in the corner, he looked at Duan Yixin and said, “Elder Sister, those seeds are not for sale.”
Duan Yixin raised her eyebrows slightly and asked, “Not for sale?”
The boy nodded and said, “These seeds were sent by the government a few days ago to be distributed to farmers.”
“Can you tell me more about this?” Duan Yixin asked with a hint of interest in her voice.
Before the boy could answer, a man in his thirties came out of the back door of the store and said, “The government wants farmers to plant new seeds and see if they can grow these seeds in our soil. Unfortunately, although the government distributes seeds for free, no one wants to plant them. Farmers do not want to take risks and opt for safer choices of growing conventional crops. Judging from the current situation, there may be an order forcing farmers to plant the new seed in the near future.”
Duan Yixin looked at the yellow corn kernels on the sacks and thought, ‘So there is corn in this world, but no one knows how to grow it. It’s now early summer, a good time to start planting corn.’
Thinking about this, Duan Yixin asked, “Shopkeeper, if I want to plant them, what should I do to get the seeds from the government?”
The store owner looked at Duan Yixin in surprise and said, “If you want the seeds, just go to the local magistrate’s office and register your name. They will give you an identity document, and then you can bring the document here, and we will give the seed to you.”
Duan Yixin was surprised that the procedure was very simple. She looked at the store owner and said, “Shopkeeper, I want to register, but I don’t know anyone in the local magistrate’s office. Do you know who I should find there?”
The store owner thought for a while, looked at his son, and said, “Son, you go with this young lady to the local magistrate’s office and find your uncle.”
The little boy nodded, patted his chest, and said, “Father, leave this matter to me.”
After saying that, the little boy looked at Duan Yixin and said, “Elder Sister, please come with me.”
Duan Yixin nodded to him, then looked at the store owner and said, “I will come back after registering my name. Please keep the Chinese cabbage seeds for me first, and I will pay for them after I come back.”
The store owner smiled at her and said, “All right.”
After leaving the store, the little boy led her to the local magistrate’s office. When they arrived, the guards saw the little boy and asked, “Xiao Dou, why are you here today? Are you here to see your uncle?”
The little boy nodded and replied, “Yes. This elder sister wanted to register to receive new seeds. I brought her here today just to ask my uncle to help her with this matter.”
Hearing this, the two guards looked at Duan Yixin for a few seconds. One of them said after a moment of silence, “Please come with me, Young Lady.”
Duan Yixin nodded and followed them together with the little boy. After passing through the front yard, they came to a large square. On the right side, Duan Yixin saw a group of men sparing with each other, and on the left side, she saw another group of men training in archery.
Seeing her looking around curiously, the guard asked, “Is it that surprising that we train like this?”
Duan Yixin nodded and said, “Yes. I think people who work in local county government only do some administrative work. It is indeed surprising to see them training like soldiers.”
