Buying Land (2)
Tang Sanniu smiled at the young guard and said, “Thank you for leading the way.”
The young guard nodded and then left. After a while, the older guard came out and said, “Please come with me.”
Tang Sanniu and Duan Yixin followed him in and saw a middle-aged man in his forties sitting behind a large desk, busy dealing with a document.
The guard stood in front of the man, clasped his fists, and said, “Da Ren, this is the village chief of Yunshan Village.”
Cao Jianbo didn’t even raise his head and said, “Mhm. You can leave.”
The guard saluted him and said, “This subordinate will take his leave.”
The guard walked away, leaving only Tang Sanniu and Duan Yixin standing in front of the local magistrate. A few seconds later, Cao Jianbo put down his writing brush on the brush stand, put the document on the top of a stack of documents on his right, and looked at them.
“I heard you two wanted to see me.” He said calmly.
Tang Sanniu clasped his fists, bowed at Cao Jianbo, and said, “Yes, Da Re. We are here to buy land.”
Cao Jianbo raised his eyebrows when he heard the reason why they came to his office early in the morning. Seeing that only Tang Sanniu was saluting him, Cao Jianbo looked at Duan Yixin.
Seeing her calm expression, neither arrogant nor humble, Cao Jianbo thought to himself, ‘This young lady’s demeanor is just like those noble ladies in the imperial capital city. Is she really a villager?’
Cao Jianbo observed her for a while and said to Tang Sanniu, “Please be at ease.”
Tang Sanniu straightened his back, and Cao Jianbo asked, “Have you chosen the location of the land?”
Taking out the map of the land Duan Yixin selected last night, Tang Sanniu said, “This is the map for the location of the land, Da Ren.”
The assistant walked up to them and took the map from Tang Sanniu. Then, he handed the map to Cao Jianbo and stood aside. Cao Jianbo looked at the map and found that the location was near Yun Mountain, and he raised his eyebrows in surprise.
The land was not fertile, nor was it close to any main roads. Judging from the location of this land alone, no one would buy it, no matter how cheap it was. But today, someone actually came to buy this secluded piece of land.
Putting down the map, he asked, “How much land do you want to buy?”
Tang Sanniu gestured to Duan Yixin and replied, “Da Ren, it is her who wants to buy the land.”
Hearing this, Cao Jianbo’s calm expression finally showed some ripples. He observed Duan Yixin for a long time and thought that she was too ignorant to buy land at this time. Because of the presence of bandits, they didn’t know whether they could still live here or not.
Although he had this thought in his heart, Cao Jianbo did not show it on his face and just asked calmly, “Young Lady, how much land do you want to buy?”
After setting up the hydroponic system last night, Duan Yixin found that she needed a larger area to accommodate the number of seeds she wanted to plant. After calculating for a few seconds, she said, “I want to buy twenty acres of land in that location.”
After she finished speaking, Tang Sanniu took a deep breath in surprise. He remembered that Duan Yixin told him the night before that she only wanted two acres of land. Why did it become twenty acres of land today?
The amount of money needed to buy twenty acres of land is no joke for a villager like them. What’s more, Duan Yixin has nothing to her name, and everyone in Yunshan Village knows how poor she is.
Other villagers can still afford to eat every day, but Tang Sanniu is convinced that Duan Yixin cannot afford to eat even one meal, so she must been eating at Chi family’s house these days.
Since that is the case, then where did she get the money to buy these twenty acres of land? Does she really have a secret wealth that is unknown to everyone?
But if she doesn’t have enough money to pay later, it will not be as simple as canceling the document. The local magistrate might punish her for playing a joke on him. It was a sin that could cost her her life.
Thinking of the seriousness of this matter, Tang Sanniu couldn’t help but think, ‘Could it be that Brother Duan really left something for her besides that dilapidated thatched house?’
While Tang Sanniu’s mind was filled with speculation, Cao Jianbo had different thoughts.
After the bandits attacked the villages a few days ago, the economy of Chunshan Township plummeted. It is already a miracle that the villagers can still have food on their tables, and it is common for villagers to starve to death.
The death toll was increasing every day, and this problem had been giving him a headache. But the young lady in front of him actually wanted to buy twenty acres of land at once. The total amount of money to buy the land was not something an ordinary villager could afford. Even his monthly salary as a local county magistrate is only ten taels of silver.

After a moment of silence, Cao Jianbo asked, “Young Lady, do you know the price of the land in this location?”
Duan Yixin nodded and said, “Yes, Da Ren. When I asked about that piece of land before, the village chief already told me. One acre of land costs two taels of silver.”
“Now that you know about the land price, do you still want to buy twenty acres of land at once?” Cao Jianbo asked again.
Duan Yixin didn’t see any problem with her buying twenty acres of land at once unless there was a regulation limiting her purchase.
